Elder abuse can happen to anyone, even your parents. How to prevent it. | Jane Walsh | TEDxMileHigh

Elder crime is shockingly prevalent: one in ten adults over 60 will be abused in their lifetime. It could be physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Often at the hands of family members. Every day, seniors fall prey to fraud & financial abuse. They’ve spent decades carefully saving, only to have their nest egg wiped out, sometimes in hours. It’s a low-risk crime, it’s lucrative, and it’s often unreported. Senior Deputy District Attorney Jane Walsh explains how the legal system can change to accommodate elderly victims and what YOU can do to protect your parents, grandparents, and neighbors from elder crime. Jane Walsh has worked as an attorney in Scotland, England & Wales, and Colorado. In Boulder, she established the Community Protection Division of the District Attorney's office. She prosecuted cases involving elderly victims, people with disabilities, and immigrants. Through this work, she became involved in legislative efforts to protect vulnerable victims. In Denver, as a Senior Deputy, she is Director of Elder and At-Risk Protection. When we’re not in a pandemic, she plays Irish fiddle music in bars around Colorado. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Nursing Homes are virtual prisons that exploit the aged, I respect people that care for their aged parents, my Mother suffered a serious Stroke and I cared for her for 12 plus years, she didn’t deserve to be dumped in a Nursing Home like her Doctors advised, I’m glad I challenged Her doctors advice..

I have experience this first hand with my grandmother who was abused by her daughter as a social worker I did everything in my power to get her away from my Aunt but my grandmother was afraid and Untrained social workers did not pick up on my aunts abusive tactics and manipulation of my grandmother. I never thought I would experience this in my life but I am becoming an advocate for the elderly and special needs.

I’m sorry that happened to her, Dawnique. I’ll never forget the night I found out my mom had gotten replacement debit cards and credit cards to my grandmothers accounts and were using them like they were her own. Grandma couldn’t see her bills to know something was amiss and mom did all her banking for her. It’s been 20 years and Grandma is gone and it still breaks my heart and makes it hard for me to look my mom in the eyes anymore.

The most vicious crime of all occurs when a clergy, priest, minister, Iman or Rabbi etc. uses their religious position to personally scam money out of unsuspecting seniors for their own self gain. NYC is a haven for criminals who get away with this despicable behavior. I have not found a resource to help my dad and expose these unscrupulous clergy. In my fathers case a very well-known clergy.

Your sister didn’t end up a narcissist on your mother’s watch by accident but whatever I’m just telling you something I wish I didn’t know as well as I do - - you need to find a diplomatic way to keep your sister from getting power of attorney and be the one to advocate for your mother’s Interest and protection as well as your own

unfortunately this happened before my great grandmother passed. She had a caregiver that took advantage of her and stole $1000-$2,000 of products she didn't buy or need. It was sad to see an older woman who knows better to take advantage of my 93 year old grandmother. So I came to work as her caregiver, but eventually I wouldn't be able to due to school. My grandmother and mother didn't trust caregivers much anymore so the idea of a nursing home was better than a stranger going to her home.

I witnessed elder abuse in a store in Japan. The security guard who also seemed to witness it did nothing. I talked to the man who had abused his mother outside the store but he was non-commital. Claimed not to have done anything. I realized I would have to call the police soon, then explain in my third language what I had seen, and hope the man would not make a counter claim. All the while knowing, that he and his family would go home and the abuse would continue. It was disheartening.
