El Nino to La Nina: How will shifting weather patterns impact the region?

Parts of Asia have been scorching hot in the past few months, partly due to the El Nino phenomenon. But things are about to shift, with meteorologists saying La Nina is likely to take over for the second half of the year. What should you expect and how do these climate patterns change the weather?
Dr Benjamin Horton, director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore and professor at Nanyang Technological University’s Asian School of the Environment, tells CNA's Asia First that while El Nino has contributed to record-breaking temperatures in the past year, the ultimate driving factor has been human-induced climate change.

Kudos to Prof. Horton in highlighting "Human induced climate change". This shuts the notion that what is happening to our weather now is natural when actually can be mitigated. We must do our part to lessen human induced climate change.

Overall, the shift from El Niño to La Niña will bring a reversal of weather patterns, with increased rainfall and potential flooding in some areas of Asia-Pacific, and drought conditions in others, impacting agricultural production and water resources.

El Niño disrupts weather patterns in Southeast Asia, causing extreme conditions like droughts and heavy rainfall, which impact agriculture and water resources. It can be difficult for people in rural areas who do not have access to running water.

wdym by "rural areas who do not have access to running water" ? or was that meant for the uncontacted tribes in Asia? you have the wrong idea if you still think rural areas in Asia is still stuck on the Asian equivalent of the Middle Ages or something

@@rigobertoitachijohnson I literally spend my time in a mountainous part of Southeast Asia where there is no running water. And the people in the area are indeed rural farmers, not an "uncontacted tribe". Imagine fetching water and moving it around via motorbike during a drought while there are record temperatures in your area.

@@ThickBanana what part? i'm from Philippines and I also went to a Mountainous province due to family reasons, I'm pretty sure the heat index when we went there was atleast 45°C. Water was not an issue and that region is supposed to be one of the "poorest" regions in Luzon... yet they have better living conditions and have a slower pace of life compared to people from Urban areas... The main reason i wanted to comment is because I'm tired of Westerners deciding what is "good" or "bad" living conditions are in Asia when they have zero connections to any Asian culture and live on the other side of the world... If Malaysians,Indonesians,Viet and Thai people from rural areas can comment using English, I'm pretty sure there will be less misunderstandings about the SEA region

The relationship between climate change and stronger El Niño events is the subject of ongoing scientific research. While there is no clear scientific consensus, recent research suggests that global warming may lead to stronger El Niño events. Climate change is something that is not yet seen in the future and is not associated with severe weather or expected due to serious or severe consequences. Climate change is a global change in the environment and ecosystems. This is not due to past and present, but to adapting to changes or shifts and innovating through alignment. Fear is an agent of change, a good example of this would be unprecedented things like towering sea levels or the emergence of new continents.

What CNA should communicate is that ecological restoration and ecological integration in urban areas is most urgent. Integrating permaculture everywhere so that the water and power of the sun is captured and turned into useful resources, food, water (by storage), shade, and even building materials. Renewable energy and infrastructure means little if it's washed away in the rainy season. The work over *finance* is the key necessity. People at all scales large and small have to build for a new climate. Finance is designed to flip home loans on industrial scale housing development and that's not fit for purpose anymore. Until the financing is made available, no construction sector to handle the kind of changes will emerge. It's not profitable for the existing system. We face a conversion similar to the transition from a war economy after WWII to peace time. The old economy is not fit for purpose.

We are having catastrophic weather, like extreme floods. This 100 year floods are now set to come every 35 years or 8 years in some counties of the US. This is a global phenomena though, because it's what a warmer atmosphere brings. More intense flooding but falling intensively concentrated, like cells on steroids.

But about earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, sinkholes, tsunami, dry lakes and rivers, flow of water from the mountains and hills, explodeand of eyes water from the ground, formation of new mountains or islands, collaps of mountains ,and cracks on ground,& ,& ,&,they are out of control or balance... If you think Prof. Horton is aggressive then better think further as climate change has become climate crisis and the most affected community will be those in poverty, areas or countries that are lack of infrastructure development such as south asia. Both government and NGO meed to implement Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction instead of still being " wait and see to response " .

Abstract : The energy that dominates the earth is very great, some of it is natural, like the heat of the sun and volcanoes, and some of it is human action, by cutting down trees, without replacing them and cultivating in their place... There are five forces that control or dominate the planet... 1- The first theory (horizontal dynamic movement) and its end... The occurrence of storms, rain, floods and snow, at unexpected times and places, is because of the expiration of this theory, which needs to be balanced... 2- The second theory (vertical dynamic movement) and its end... This movement or force controls or dominates the earthquakes, earth cracks, drying up of rivers and lakes, earth openings, mountain collapses, and the emergence of drinking water springs on the ground... It becomes out of control... These phenomena increased due to the end of this theory... The third theory: it is water that rotates the earth... The fourth theory: the Earth's axis of rotation has tilted 2° degrees... The fifth theory: The Earth has a new orbit... These studies had completed and sent on July 26th 2000 YOUSIF A TOBIYA

If there is a change in the climate it isn't because of burning fossil fuel, it is judgement upon a sinful world. So, that is how humans contribute to climate change. Eventually the elements of the world will melt with fervent heat. "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." (2 Peter 3:10)
