El Morro | The Caribbean's Greatest Fort

www.puertoricobygps.com - If there's one word that describes Fort San Felipe del Morro, in San Juan, Puerto Rico it's awesome! And that's exactly what the weather was also like this past weekend. It was awesome. So Zoraida and I took to the road to finish this two-part series about the Spanish Forts in Puerto Rico.
Fort San Felipe del Morro is a 6-level military fortification that rises 145 feet above sea level. However, when you first arrive it doesn't seem tall at all. This is because the entrance to the fort is through a concrete bridge that goes straight into the fifth level.
The purpose of Fort San Felipe del Morro was to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay. And in doing so it also guarded the southern part of the city of San Juan. The eastern side of the city was protected by Fort San Cristobal and the north has so many reefs that trying to land anywhere on that coast would have been pure suicide.
Spanish forts in Puerto Rico were built using the latest technology of the day. And while they seem simple today, there are actually many engineering, architecture and military strategy techniques built into the forts that still surprise the visitor. Be sure to ask your friendly park ranger about the construction of the city walls and the tunnels at Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristobal. There's a lot more there than you might think.
The San Juan National Historic Site was added to the UNESCO Register of World Heritage Sites in 1983. It is operated by the United States National Park Service. For more information call 787-729-6777.
This video is not an official publication of the United States National Park Service. It only reflects the views of Orlando Mergal, a concerned local travel blogger that loves his beautiful island of Puerto Rico and enjoys showing it to the world.

So, what's the problem. Hop on a plane and come right over. It's great, admittance is cheap and the ranger explain every nook and cranny. You can't go wrong.

Two errors: 1. Spanisth did not plunder the gold, they were not thieves. They built mines in Spanish territory, America was Spain, not a colony. The thieves and assasins were the pirates (mainly french, english, dutch..), they were not those gentlemen that Hollywood Shows... 2. The route to come back to Spain didn't go from Puerto Rico, it used to go from Havana, going north-north east to the east coast of Florida, San Agustín, and then norht east-east until they reached Azores and then Cádiz-Seville. Anyway, good vídeo. Many thanks.

I don't know where you get your history bro! Saying that the Spanish were no thiefs? They came to America to rob, kill, enslave and abuse

@@josemercado4702 Modern History In the University of Seville where is the Archivo de Indias. The most important historic archive of the world about América and the Flota de Indias... Read history, read anything, is good for your mind. Don't see much TV. Please don't buy Hollywood propaganda to hide their killings of one million of north american indians. Really, history is very insteresting and books don't bite. Keep trying. The Leyenda Negra is only a lie to mantain all the spanish speaking countries in America divided. In only one year foreign multinational companies get more gold and silver that Spain in 300 years. The gold that Spain got on that time, 80% remained in America to build fortresses, universities, roads, hospitals, cathedrals. Mexico in 1810 was the richest city in the world. People in the spanisht provinces of America (they were provinces, not colonies) ate more meat than in London, Berlin, Paris, Madrid or Rome. Please, don't waste watching tv your life and read please.

America belonged to its native habitants. Those were the true Americans. Whatever the Spaniard removed from the colonies was an act of robbery. As for your second point I would have to verify, but I’m pretty sure the last port on the way to Spain was Puerto Rico because it’s a lot closer.
