Accident Description: pCjSnV71vJ...
𝗘𝗹 𝗔𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟭𝟴𝟲𝟮 was an international cargo flight from New York to Tel Aviv with an intermediate stop in Amsterdam. The flight was being operated by a Boeing 747-200F (Reg. 4X-AXG) on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟰, 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟮.
The plane arrived at Amsterdam at 14:40 local time for a crew change, cargo processing and refueling. The plane taxied out to runway 01L at 18:14 and started the takeoff roll at 18:21. At 18:28:30, as the plane was climbing through 6,500 feet, the no. 3 engine and pylon separated from the wing in an outward and rearward movement, colliding with the no. 4 engine causing this engine and pylon to separate as well. An emergency was declared and the crew acknowledged their intention to return to Schiphol Airport. At 18:28:57 the radar controller informed the crew that runway 06 was in use with wind from 40° at 21 knots. The crew however requested runway 27 for landing.
A straight in approach to runway 27 was not possible because of plane's altitude (5,000 feet) and distance to the runway (7 miles). When it became apparent that the plane was going to overshoot the localizer, the controller informed the crew accordingly and directed them to turn to heading 290 to try and intercept the final approach path again. A further instruction was given for a 310° heading change and descent clearance for 1,500 feet. While reducing speed in preparation for the final approach, control was lost and the plane crashed into an 11-floor apartment building in the Bijlmermeer suburb of Amsterdam.
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀:
"The design and certification of the B 747 pylon was found to be inadequate to provide the required level of safety. Furthermore the system to ensure structural integrity by inspection failed. This ultimately caused - probably initiated by fatigue in the inboard midspar fuse-pin - the no. 3 pylon and engine to separate from the wing in such a way that the no. 4 pylon and engine were torn off, part of the leading edge of the wing was damaged and the use of several systems was lost or limited.
This subsequently left the flight crew with very limited control of the airplane. Because of the marginal controllability a safe landing became highly improbable, if not virtually impossible."

man, that whoop whoop is the sound of death..
RIP To the three crew members and one passenger of El Al Flight 1862 and the 39 people on the ground
This aircraft was doomed with the damage it received shortly after takeoff. The pilot fought so hard but sadly there was no way he could have saved the aircraft from crashing

Allow me to preface my comment with: This was definitely not the crews fault in any way. They were faced with a situation that just wasn't trained for. if the crew had sent the flight engineer to go look at the wing, they might have noticed the torn off engines and slats and might just have been able to perform a high speed approach and landing. So they weren't completely doomed, not initially. (All cargo aircraft have one or two windows overlooking the wing, so crew can inspect them for ice or damage in flight). However, no one could have actually expected both engines, their mounts and most of the slats to depart the aircraft like they did. (The departure of these items also damaged other components). The plane was flyable at higher speeds. Just. As indicated by the crew's successful turn back and heading to the airport. The crew thought they had a fire and wanted back on the ground asap to deal with it. They did not notice that the engine gauges for engines 3 and 4 were all reading 0. Indicating the engines were gone. (Even an engine that was on fire and was shut down would windmill in the airflow and generate some readings on the gauges). What sealed their fate was slowing down and using flaps via hydraulics. (Perfectly normal thing to do in 99.99999% of cases). The crew were slowing the plane down for landing, as you would expect them too. But they had no idea how damaged the right wing was. The Hydraulic lines were severed causing most of the movable components on the right wing to not work (if they were still attached). ALL of the flaps and slats extended on the left wing, which dramatically increased the lift the left wing created. But on the right wing, only about 20% of the flats and slats were still able to work. And they did, but the massive asymmetric lift difference was too much. Once the crew slowed down some more, the right wing stalled and snapped the 747 into a nose down, right hand spiral into the ground. If the crew had used only the first couple of flap positions and kept their speed up... they might have made it. The landing would have been rough though. Addendum: Some time after the crash, the scenario was fed into flight sim computers and pilots tried to fly the scenario. Most made it once they realised there was damage to the hydraulics and used the emergency electric power to move the flaps. This allowed enough of the flaps on the right wig to extend and generate enough lift to keep up with the left wing. The loss of the leading edge slats on the right wing caused some lost of lift, but it is easily countered by added 20 knots of speed to the approach. But, it has to be said, these pilots all benefitted from hindsight. The crew of El Al 1862 did not have that luxury.

I'm not Dutch, but I live in Netherlands and have visited Amsterdam several times. I was thinking the same what you wrote. I don't know why, but when she said it, it filled my eyes with tears...
I'll always wonder why they made right turns with engines 3 and 4 out.

It was the easiest way to turn, because of the missing engines and the damaged wing, that caused asymmetric lift. Turning left would have been almost impossible.

I wonder, Would it have been possible to land without flaps on a runway with a headwind. The speed will be very high in that configuration at touch down. But I suspect he would have had less control problems if the flaps hadn't been used. (Although of course the pilot had not seen the wing. )

I wonder if they made a simulation with the same damage and, for example, couldn't you try to rescue and not reduce the speed, do not lower the flaps and try, for example, to launch in the rather calm waters of a nearby, after all, large lake?

You definetly cannot land on water with those speeds. It would completely tear the airplane apart. Also, the pilots simply didn't know
