Eine kleine Beatlemusic ~ The Barock and Roll Ensemble

Музыка

This is a medley of Early Beatles hits ( inc. She loves you, I want to hold your hand, Hard days night, and others) played in a classical style by The Barock and Roll Ensemble, it is in three movements, Allegro, Minuet & Trio-finale and was released back in 1965.
EMI and Northern Songs commisioned Liverpool musician Fritz Speigl to come up with classical sounding interpretations of the Beatles music, which he called Eine Kleine Beatlemusic, which was obviously a take on Mozart's Eine kleine nachtmusik. Although seen as a spoof, it opened up a whole new field of Beatles music performed in the concert music style.
This recording is from EMI's Just for laughs compilation album from the early 70's

George Harrison and Fritz Spiegl crossed paths in 1960, according to a humorous, if not totally clear, anecdote in Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles - Tune In" (p292). "This was a two-in-one [all night] party, musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra relaxing upstairs in full evening dress after a concert, while the scruffy students did their thing downstairs... George was becoming very, very bevvied. He came close to an altercation when the two parties temporarily mixed and he called over to flautist Fritz Spiegl, 'Hey, Geraldo--got any Elvis?'"

The B-side 'On the Beyreuth Beat' was also a humorous pastiche, with Wagner being performed by a 60's pop group (with twangy guitars reminiscent of The Shadows).

I loved it - had the diac and we played it in school chamber music group. Wish someone would put up the B-side (on the Bayreuth Beat), pleeeeese!!! Thanks, Mark.

Paid a hell lot of money for it back in the early 80ties! Even after listening to this piece of music after more than nearly 40 years it still makes me laugh!

In answer to the "phasing" question, the record was only ever released in mono on vinyl and was not a big seller. Anyone trying to re-master it for digital is usually faced with lots of noise-reduction problems. This version sounds pretty good, considering. I remember that the force behind the record was Liverpool Philharmonic flautist (and "Z Cars" arranger) Fritz Spiegl.

I had the EP/single of this. Much later, there was a big spoof/fraud in the classical music world when it appeared that a previously unknown work by Haydn was discovered in mss. Even the renowned Haydn expert Robbins-Landon claimed it was authentic. I think Speigl was behind that joke too.

Is there something wrong with this recording? It sounds as if there is some phasing/phlanging going on. This is especially noticeable with the strings sound.
