시놉시스: 코로나19가 일상을 멈추게 하자 배달용 플라스틱 용기와 마스크가 우리 삶을 뒤덮었다.〈제로 웨이스트〉는 코로나 팬데믹 한복판에서 환경을 지키기 위해 고군분투하는 이들의 모습을 담는다. 제주도에 살며 바다 쓰레기를 줍는 변수빈 씨로 시작해 리필스테이션 알맹상점과 환경을 지키기 위한 시민 활동 등을 교차로 비추는 것. 카메라가 가닿는 시선마다 쓰레기가 가득하지만 영화는 우리가 처한 현실의 절망을 강조하기보다 활동가마다의 낙관의 태도에 무게를 둔다. 자신의 자리에서 “할 수 있는 것을 하는” 이들을 깊이 들여다봄으로써 관객을 이들 행동의 동행자로 초대하는 것이다. 소설가 최정화는 책『비닐봉지는 안 주셔도 돼요』에서 ‘영쩜일 웨이스트’라는 표현을 썼다. 완벽에 가까운 ‘제로’가 실현하기에 너무 어려운 목표라면 ‘영쩜일’을 지향하며 긴 호흡으로 조금씩 삶을 바꿔보자는 의미다. 극 중 변수빈 씨가 촉구하는 “작은 용기”도 이와 비슷한 마음가짐일 터.〈제로 웨이스트〉는 그렇게 관객에게 미래 세대를 위한 오늘의 작은 변화를 요청한다. 소비자 운동을 중심에 두고 있지만 생산 단계의 변화를 촉구하는 것 또한 잊지 않은 채.
As COVID-19 stopped everyday life, plastic containers for deliveries and masks took over our lives. Zero Waste follows people struggling to protect the environment in the midst of the COVID-19. Starting with Byun Su-bin who lives on Jeju Island and picks up ocean trash, the documentary intersects between the refill station, Almang Market, and environmentalist. Every place the camera shows is littered with trash but it weighs in the optimism of each activist, rather than emphasizing the hopelessness of our reality. By taking a deep look at those who are doing what they can in their place, the documentary invites the audience to join them in the action. Writer Choi Jeong- hwa uses ‘zero point one waste’ in her book, No Plastic Bags , Please. It suggests that if the near-perfect zero is a too challenging target, we could take a breath and slowly change our life for the better. A similar mindset to the small acts of courage that Su- bin urges in the documentary. Zero Waste asks the audience to make small changes today for future generations in this way. It centers on consumer movements, not to missdemandingchangesattheproductionlevel.
