시놉시스: 스스로 직업이 두 가지라고 말하는 엄마. 엄마의 첫 번째 직업은 주부이고 두 번째 직업은 ‘아시아의 친구들’이라는 인권단체의 활동가이다. 그러나 작품 전반을 통해 엄마는 아주 맹렬한 활동가로 묘사되고 있지 않다. 여느 활동가들처럼 그다지 전투적이지도 않아 보인다. 인권단체 활동가로서의 일을 왜 하냐는 딸의 질문에 대해 그럴듯한 논리에 근거한 화려한 수사도 없이 그저 ‘옳은 일을 해야 하는 건 그걸 왜 해야 해서 때문이 아니라 그게 옳은 것이기 때문’이라고 간단히 말해버리고 만다. 그래서 훨씬 진실에 가까워 보인다. 드러내려는 모습도 안 보인다. 그래서 사람의 마음을 끈다. 작품 초반 엄마가 꿈꾸는 세상이 비현실적이라고 여기며 엄마의 모습과 목소리를 담기 시작했지만 점차 엄마의 모습과 마음에 대해 이해의 시선으로 그 시선을 이동해 가는 과정이 매우 자연스럽다. 울타리 너머의 세상을 엄마를 통해 알아버리게 된 ‘나’. 결국, 작은 일 이나마 엄마에게 힘이 되기를 작정하고 엄마가 실제로 다루고 있는 난민 신청 소송 건에 스스로 몸담게 된다. 멀찍이서 카메라만 드는 일에 회의를 느끼고 렌즈가 아닌 실제의 두 눈으로 세상을 바라보기로 작정하면서 어느덧 ‘어쩌다 활동가’인 엄마의 일에 ‘나도 활동가’로 참여하게 되는 모습이 슬며시 미소를 짓게 만든다.
The documentary introduces a mother who describes herself as having two jobs. Her first job is as a housewife, and her second job is as an activist for a human rights organization called ‘Friends of Asia’. To answer her daughter’s question as to why she continues to work as a human rights activist, the mother simply replies, without any fancy rhetoric or logic: “You do the right thing because it’s the right thing, not because of why.” At first, the director finds the ideal world her mother dreams of unrealistic as she films her and records her voice, but the way the director’s perspective shifts to understand her mother and her mind feels very natural. The director, in her first-person perspective, comes to know the world beyond the fence through her mother. In the end, the director decides to help her mother, however little it may be, by getting involved in an asylum seeker’s case her mother has been working on. After feeling skeptical about simply holding a camera from a distance, the director decides to look at the world with her own eyes rather than through a camera lens. The director’s gradual transformation into an ‘activist equivalant’ by participating in the work of her mother who is ‘the accidental activist,’ leaves the audience with a smile.
