EHX Grand Canyon: Killer Ambient Guitar Loops/Delays

Музыка

I play an ambient guitar piece featuring the EHX Grand Canyon! The combination of the Tape Delay type and the built-in looper with decaying overdubs is to die for. This piece combines the Grand Canyon with EBow drones and an Arturia synth plugin for additional ambient textures.

This is ambient with quite an edge to it. World on edge, makes sense...My old Lexicon mix did the decay thing quite nicely. Maxed out at around 2 seconds, and you had some control over how it did so. Everything I wrote for about 3 years was built around those loops back in 97. The only limitation of the G Canyon for me is when it is in my rig it usually ends up a ways back because of the mono in. The stereo widening button when engaged is really dramatic and beautiful.

Epic Bill. I have a Grand Canyon too. Quite a recent acquisition so I'm still getting to know it. I bought the original Canyon delay when EHX released it and just fell in love with the analogue delay. I used it a lot! Last year I went stereo hence the upgrade to the Grand Canyon. Anyway, that was a great Frippertronics jam. I loved the didgeridoo character of the synth drone!

Oh that was lovely and peaceful. I didn't notice the Buchla. :( I guess it reminds me of the days when Jan Hammer made his keyboards sound like guitars and Al DiMeola made his guitars sound like synths. At some point, I realized that AudioPilz (Bad Gear) was using the Canyon and you were using the Grand Canyon - and that definitely speaks volumes for how good ~that pedal is. lovely.

My favourite thing about the Grand Canyon is how the looper can gradually fade old layers as new are added. It's exactly what frippertronics requires!

I found that the intial layer put into looper on the grand canyon doesn't fade out, I'm I doing something wrong? I wanted to replace my aging DD-20 Gigadelay. The Gigadelay does the old style tape loop frippertronics perfectly. Try this out, of you have one. You set the delay to tape mode, max out the feedback and effect level, set it to a half note and set your delay time to 4 seconds or higher, and you're set. Play some long notes, here and there, and then turn the delay off and the tails of the delay will loop and fade slowly, it allows you to play over it and then engage the delay to add more to the loop. Unfortunately, I can't do that with the Grand Canyon?

  • @Pandamasque

@@CockySoupNazi try playing with the white delay/fadeout knob. And I think it only fades away if you feed it more signal. If you don't play and just stand around, even with the "recording" on, it'll probably play indefinitely.

@@Pandamasque I'm going to play with it more. I wish it played with other pedals to, in front of my gigadelay it turns to mush. I really like the delays that are included with the pedal, they're amazing. Thanks for the reply.

I just ordered a Grand Canyon and a Minilogue XD today. I can't wait to get them hooked up. I'm trying to go mostly software free. I have a MPC Live 2, and a midi controller. After I pay off the Minilogue and the Grand Canyon, I'm probably going to get some kind of digital synth, and a mixer of some sort. I'm so sick of software companies, and their greedy ethics. I own about 10k in software, and when I started looking into reselling some of the stuff I don't use, they either don't allow license to be resold, or they charge to transfer. I bought the Evolution-series Kontakt library when it was on sale for $600.00, I hardly use it, so I figured I would sell it. Unfortunately, they don't allow owners to resell. I also own a little over $1140.00 in Toontracks software, when I looked into reselling, they want $15 per license transfer. After I did the math, I would have to pay them almost $500.00 to transfer all of the products that I already paid the $1140.00+ for. This is obviously due to greed. They don't want people competing with them. Imagine if you wanted to sell a piece of hardware, and the company either told you that you couldn't or you had to pay them X amount of money to do it. These software and library companies are scum imo. There are some good companies that don't try to double dip though, and there's companies with great customer service. For example when I bought my MPC Live 2 second hand, I was able to register it at no cost, and got full access to all of the software that a new one comes with. Cymatics is also an ethical company when it comes to customer service. I bought products off of them, and asked for a refund within the 60 day window for a refund, and it was almost immediate, and they were very friendly about it. Be careful when you pay big money to these software and library companies. Hardware is the way to go, if you have room for it. I'm becoming anti software. There's a few companies that are essential these days, but there's a lot of shady high priced not worth the money types too.

@Soy Orbison I've definitely used my delay pedal as a semi-looper before by turning up the feedback and repeat time as high as I could get them and then only turning it on when I wanted to add a new note (the repeats keep going when it's turned off, Boss DD-7). More active than using the little built in looper for creating Soundscapes, lets you have notes slowly go away over time.
