EGYPTIAN TALES, TRANSLATED FROM THE PAPYRI
First Series, IVth To XIIth Dynasty
By W. M. Flinders Petrie, D.C.L., LL.D.., Ph.D., Hon. F.S.A. (Scot.)
TALES OF THE MAGICIANS
One day, when King Khufu reigned over all the land, he said to his
chancellor, who stood before him, "Go call me my sons and my
councillors, that I may ask of them a thing." And his sons and his
councillors came and stood before him, and he said to them, "Know ye a
man who can tell me tales of the deeds of the magicians?"
Then the royal son Khafra stood forth and said, "I will tell thy majesty
a tale of the days of thy forefather Nebka, the blessed; of what came to
pass when he went into the temple of Ptah of Ankhtaui."

Usually we judge an ancient civilization by its more durable goods which have survived the passing of time... pottery, masonry or forged items. The world's best poets and storytellers may well have dressed in furs and lived in caves but we'll never know. Their work has not survived. We should appreciate that the ancient Egyptians enjoyed stories as much as we do and I'm grateful some have survived. Thanks for the upload.

Listening to these tales, I am surprised how much of what I have heard of Egyptian stories comes down to us from this collection. David Macaulay's Pyramid, a video based on his book of the same title, incorporates one of the tales of The Magicians. Chapter Four has been rendered into an Egyptian language sea shanty (to the tune of The Wellerman) by ScorpioMartianus. Pretty sure there are fragments of other elements of these stories which are familiar to me, but not in context. =^[.]^=

1:14:31 "The King, Sehotehbabra, flew up to heaven, and joined the sun's disc. The follower of the god met his maker." Then, at 1:20:51 "For the great goddess has given to him to strike those who *know* *her* *not* . And if he reaches forth he spares none and leaves naught behind."

I thought the shipwrecked sailor ended with the captain rejecting the story as a way to cheer him up, and implies he is going to be put to death by saying something about no use in giving water to a bird or something at sunrise that is to be slain in the morning.
