eGull | An Electric Ultralight

Ray was kind enough to tell me all about his airplane. I really think that electric propulsion will soon be much more viable in the near future as battery capacity improves.

    State of the art this year should be a a 500 wh/kg battery from CATL or a few other battery producers. Hard to get and probably expensive for now. But they basically announced those a few months ago. That's probably at least double the energy density in this thing. And since you use a lot of that on take off, that should extend range by more than 2x. Five years from now, we might get another doubling.

    Hey buddy being a retired electrician I cant help myself. Now if the motor is rated at 52KW that's 52,000 watts now 746 watts = 1x H.P. SO DIVIDE 52,000 by 746 gives you 69.7 horsepower. that's some power so that plane should hoot. which I am about to watch as I stopped viewing while I was typing as I cant multitask.

    I'm wondering if the addition of some solar panels may extend the flying time? If it were me I get the feeling that I was rushed wondering about power level I think for me it would decrease the enjoyment knowing there was a brick wall of flying time. Matt what is the flying time for your gas powered aircraft with full tanks? Thanks for the video.

  • @mmatt

    @mmatt

    2 жыл бұрын

    Solar panels would only add minutes of flight time as I understand it. They would weigh more than they contribute I think. I can fly for about 2 hours on 10 gallons of gas and I rarely fly more than an hour at a time. For this style of flying, I think the 70 minutes that he has is just about perfect. Especially where he doesn't have to worry about leaking fuel lines, tuning carburetors, stinky exhaust, etc.
