What I like about this ultra lite, is the noise factor, greatly reduced, compared to a gas engine, also the shear simplicity of maintenance. EDIT: I'm unable to reply in comments lately, so on the muffler issue, yeah, you could add a muffler, but then that's significant weight loading and reduces power.

I'm also a retired 79 yr.old airline pilot. I've been flying my Silent 2 Electro for 6 seasons . I also have a CriCri and an Aeroprakt 24 amphibian, but I've only flown the electric Silent since I got it. It's registered as a "Basic Ultralight" in Canada so I can do the negligible maintenance required with minimal paperwork. The Silent is 8 years old with original batteries which show very little loss of capacity. So far I've done over 550 hours in our short gliding season never needing a tow or running below 20% battery or not making it back to my airport.. Most flights are over 2 hours and several have been over 5 hours and 300km. Sadly the days are getting short and the gliding season here is almost over. I've been maintaining a commercial pilot medical but it's unnecessary for a Basic Ultralight. The Blackfly VTOL is another electric aircraft that interests me but they aren't available yet.

what I like about electric-powered flight is that its only one step away from a glider, I think a combined electric plane and glider is the way to go, electric engine to get altitude then cut the engine and glide, or power the engine right down to save battery life, the low weight of electric engines will mka this possible as battery technology advances, lighter longer-lasting batteries is what's needed,

Good vid 👍 I take a slight exception to those that say batteries are like pre-paying for fuel. Batteries are just a very expensive fuel tank. You still need to purchase and put fuel in that tank. What a beautifully clean looking setup 😍 Cant wait for the next evolution of batteries to take flying to the next level. Cheers

  • @Metacognitor

That analogy works if you add the fact that the type of fuel you'll be filling it with costs much less than gasoline per tank. Over the life of the aircraft you will end up saving quite a lot on fuel cost.

I have been into RC electric for years and it's amazing how it's progressed power is unbelievable I have some electric powered pylon racers exceed well over 150 mph. Once more companies making electric options for the ultralights we will see cost come down. Right now just not enough suppliers of these larger brushless motors cost is really high. $10k for an electric option little too much for what you get at this point. I think cost will come down as more of these motors will be made. I have found Hirth F-23 for $4650 with FI and electric start.

Notice not one mention about flight time. I was forced to switch to EV powered radio control model airplanes when the cost of nitro fuel forced me too. Our EPA did this on purpose and they doing the same thing with ICE used in our POVs.

That and the limited supply of lithium, the limited range, the discharge rate, the vulnerability to immediate electrical discharge…. For aviation, it is extremely unlikely that any significant range or flight time will be achieved electrically, specifically with weight requirements.

The inference is that once you check all the mechanical aspects you only ever have to check elec/electronic once, then never have any problems ever again. Well, I'm not saying for a minute the prospects are not great, However I am in the electrical // electronics field & should only Wish that were true, but it is fanciful.. No Electrical or Electronics are that FAILproof that can be said they won't ever have issues in avionics. The pure mechanics of manufacture & bombardment of "spirious" frequency controls issues by the airwaves ever more progressively fill the airwaves.. but sounds good, looks great.
