    This is WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST EXPLANATION about the EGR! All the other videos ive seen only focus on the egr recirculating exhaust gas into the intake, but they never explain why, what for, the way it all operates. This video COVERS IT ALL! I could honestly say that i was one of those who considered the egr a dumb idea and question what it was for. THANK YOU FOR THE VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO!

    mechanic here , this guy is correct, also D4D hilux/prado etc pistons crack due to high engine load (full power up a hill towing a caravan example), hot piston ,cold fuel shot at piston.......so if you can lower the combustion temp you improve the chances of pistons lasting. so EGR needs to stay. sadly it will soot up the intake but there are ways to mitigate this. im sure ill get critics but its true (i wish it wasnt haha)

    I have been a heavy duty diesel mechanic for over 30 years now. None of the emissions changes they have made have given trucks better fuel economy. But like he mentioned deleting the egr system greatly effects the combustion temperature. I have seen many deleted engines and they are know for cracking the head due to higher temperatures.

    16:53 carbon buildup is EXACTLY why I deleted the EGR....Owned 4JX1 car since 2000, now 35000km's...deleted EGR 3-5 years ago...Excess black smoke STOPPED during acceleration...Performance SAME....Economy SAME...Oil is CLEANER now at changes....Needles to say what I think about EGR :)

  • @wolforla

    @wolforla

    Жыл бұрын

    Probably it was faulty already. EGR cycle only happens at low rmp without power demand. If you floor it, EGR just disengages. Probably your egr was stuck open and your engine did not get enough oxy during hard acceleration, it was the root cause of the black smoke. Nevertheless I deleted mine as well... TDI has lot of kms, slight amount of oil coming from my turbo and pcv valve too. If it mixed with diesel exhaust gas, it just makes huge mess. I don't give a shit about a small amount of inefficiency or greenhouse gases, if I do not have to disassemble the whole intake system and clean it with harsh chemicals every 100k kms.

    @@wolforla My 2000 now has nearly 370km and continues to run fine with egr disconnected. My only problem is 1 litre of diesel gets into the sump every 1000km due to injector issues, NOT sleeve or seals since they have been done twice recently. I have purchased an injector spring and o-ring overhaul kit but requires actual dismantle of injectors to fit, do-able and not too hard but simply cant be bothered.' Instead I simply change oil every 2000km and low refill with just 5 liters of any cheap 20w50. Yes, car starts and runs fine even in winter with thick oil. Drain when dipstick shows overfull and then fill with 5l which brings it to just below ADD LINE on dip stick. Good thing is that diesel in oil plus regular changes (every 2k) is cleaning crankcase - been doing it nearly 18 months now - 20k

    I'm not a mechanic, and I have no wish to get dirty, but I'm here to educate myself about the EGR on my BMW X5 XDrive, which triggered my engine management indicator twice, then self cleared. My mechanic confirmed via diagnostics that it is egr. Now then, your explanation and detail delivery is top notch. You make me want to come out of electrical engineering retirement to be a mechanic. Well done sir.👍🏿👍🏿

    This is almost word for word how I was taught this system by a master mechanic who was my teacher at North Oakland Technical Training Collage. If you are not a teacher you should consider doing so, thank you for your insight and I will subscribe! As a licensed mechanic, I cannot legally delete any OEM system or change the system in any way. I use a Catch Can on my direct port injection Cadillac BUT I will not install one on a customer vehicle out of an abundance of caution.
