Egeria is ALIVE?!? One of Stargate's Most Important Lore Characters (Dial the Gate)

Ойын-сауық

SG-1's SIXTH SEASON EPISODE "Cure" added the tretonin to the show's mythology, a drug that would become very important to Teal'c and the Jaffa. But the episode also stunned viewers by introducing a legendary character from deep in the lore of the show: Egeria, the original founder of the Tok'ra resistance movement, long believed dead.
Giving a new voice to the Tok'ra Queen was veteran actress Gwynyth Walsh (who sci-fi fans will also know as B'Etor, one of the Duras sisters, on Star Trek: The Next Generation). In this clip from her longer conversation with "Dial the Gate" Walsh talks about her Tok'ra character Kelmaa, the episode's moral conundrum, and learning just how important Egeria was to Stargate's mythology.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 30-minute conversation with Gwynyth. Watch the full interview here: • 197: Gwynyth Walsh, "E...

    I always love teal’c and Jonas’s reaction when they find out that the goa’uld queen is in fact egeria. Teal’c looks so damn stunned.

    haha yeah i remember that, tbh because Teal'c's delivery of the line "she is infact the origin of tokra" or something, is so so melodramatic with the snap head turn as he says it. Its like, dun, dun dunnnnnnnnnnn!

    That "this shall be my final act" / "my children become beyond my hopes and dreams" scene always moves me to tears. So powerful on so many levels. Whole episode ranks high among my favourites.

    I have always had faith that hopefully all the defective larvae that Egeria had could have been recovered, giving life to a new generation of Tok Ra, and who knows, perhaps some unrecognized queen not identified at the time.

    I know the Tok'ra do not like the use of the Sarcophagus, but I figure they would find exception when it came to Egeria's death.

    I hear you, but you can BET she'd been pissed and rightfully so. I can imagine the Tokra council having a HEAVILY heated meeting about this.

    To think only a couple of episodes earlier they had that surviving ancient Aiyana episode. If she became host to Egeria they might've been able to help eachother with their healing abilities and survived both the Ancient and the Tok'ra Queen.

    That makes an interesting what-if concept, especially all the "lost" knowledge that both would have been able to share with both the Tok'ra and Tau'ri

    No mention of Kelmaa? Aww. Her sacrifice (and that of her host’s sacrifice) couldn’t save Egeria, but many Pangarans owe all three their lives.

    I always wished they'd been able to bring her back or at least found a way for one of the Tok Ra to become a queen. They never explained why they couldn't.

    What a great episode! Although it was really pathetic & silly to assert that the Tokra were unable to come up with any solution to sustain that symbiote long enough for Egyria to do what she needed to do. That just didn't make ANY sense on a number of levels! Quite unimaginative & short sighted writing. I also really wish the writers had devised a way to bring her back in a later episode in order to spawn some more Tokra.

    Pretty crazy to see the Goa'uld so weak and defenseless without a host. Almost makes their entire species seem like a magical fantasy though and not so much science fiction.

    Really? Ever heard of toxoplasma (the parasite that infects mice & humans & seems to cause affinity to them)? What about cordyceps (the zombie ant fungus) ? The scenario is actually very plausible, what's to say we wouldn't encounter such a species of being when we travel "out there".

    Should have handed her corpse over to the Asgard. They may have been able to clone her (not a resurrect) to re-kickstart. Her genetic data could have helped the Asgard with their problem as well.

    Very interesting proposal! The Asgard certainly may have been able to clone her or save her without a sarcophagus. That obviously would have been a matter for the Tokra to decide & perhaps pursue. It seems very unlikely that her genetic data could have helped the Asgard in any way. But perhaps you could explain that a bit...?

  • @Meushell

    @Meushell

    I don’t think the show really addressed the issue there, but cloning someone without consent would be a violation, and it seems even worse for a symbiote because her memories would be passed on. I don’t think the Tok’ra would be willing to violate their own queen.

    What is the story of why that voice effect happens in the film?

  • @GateWorldDotNet

    @GateWorldDotNet

    It's a real-life story rather than a canon story -- Dean Devlin told it when he was on "Dial the Gate." Basically Jaye Davidson originally played a human go-between who worked for the aliens, and during post production Devlin hit on the idea that Ra himself should be the alien. They added the voice flange, the glowing eyes, and the Roswell Grey alien transition, and found the villain performance worked much better.

    I'm hoping to have a video opining on this later in the month (after my voice recovers from being sick) -- but yeah, all quiet on the Amazon-MGM front. I find it frustrating, and don't plan to speculate much more about a future show until the studio actually makes a damn move.
