    What I've been eagerly waiting for is someone making a floppy controller for the PCIe bus. So much neat hardware is still being created for vintage computer, but nobody does anything to make floppies (especially the 5.25 variety) work on my modern desktop. Well, I guess it is much more difficult to develop something for PCIe than it is for ISA.

  • @joe--cool

    @joe--cool

    2 жыл бұрын

    UEFI no longer has 5.25" floppy support. So without BIOS support a PCIe card would need its own drivers. Your best bet might be a USB floppy controller. Device Side makes one you can plug a 5.25" floppy drive into (read-only). Drivers works fine on Linux, don't know about newer Windowses. Or a KryoFlux which can read and write almost anything from 3" to 8" that's a floppy. It's 100EUR+ however.

    Why not mix it when you get a chance? Take the datasette loading times, for example - As it loads in the background, you could add a 3-4 minute taste-test, giving all those that never experienced the real loading times a 'taste' of just how slow it is. You could always add a jump mark to skip through it and see if people keep watching. I, for one, loved your taste-test and was looking forward to more x.x

    I had a Commodore power supply that looked identical to the one in this video for the plus/4 but it had a 4 pin round plug on the end and was for the Commodore Amiga CD32. Paeroa (Pie Row Ah) [A Maori word so the vowels have a slight different sound to English vowels] is a small town in New Zealand that was made famous here by its mineral spring water and the L&P drink was originally created in 1907. These days the L&P brand is owned by the Coca-Cola company and the mineral water originally drawn from a well in Paeroa was replaced by a blend of minerals to match that of the original spring water that are put in the L&P syrup and added to the standard carbonated water used at their bottling plant or to freshly carbonated water in drink machines at some fast food outlets here in NZ.

    The only trouble with the cassette port adapters that use audio through a headphone Jack is they won’t work with some tape games like Turrican which starts and stops the tape at various intervals as if these 'pauses' are missing the game won’t load. 29:30 - I'm pretty sure that tape deck is the same as the C64 one but with a different connector. In this case Commodore did actually have a reason for changing the connector and that was because the plus/4 machine was smaller than the C64 and there wasn't enough real estate on the back to fit the standard C64 connector. They did the same thing with the joystick for the same reason.

    With the anti-static mat being conductive (high resistance, but conductive), I wonder if it'll cause random issues when you have powered up PCB's sitting on it? I've been meaning to test that with mine here - for now I just make sure to have PCB's I'm powering up sitting on something insulated.

    I think US cans are typically 355 mL actually, as that's 12 US fluid ounces. I've seen some European imported bottles that are 300 mL or 330 mL / 33 cL. The interesting thing about bottles in the US though, not cans, is that 500 mL is a very common size rather than 16 oz, as 500 mL is 16.9.

    So the US didn't usually have a 1 liter size of soda back in the day. You could get stuff like Gatorade in a 32 ounce bottle, but soda generally came in 8, 12, or 16 ounces and then 2 liter. Then sometime in the 90s there was a big push for bigger portion sizes everywhere, so everyone started bottling 1 liter bottles. I think it was at that time they swapped 16 ounce for 500 ml as well, because I can't honestly recall when the last time I saw a 16 ounce bottle was, and the first time I saw a 16.9. Also, I don't know when the 2 liter was introduced, and if there was a 64 ounce soda bottle before then. I'd assume so, but that's before my time.

    @@rawr51919 This is because the Imperial and the US ounces aren't the same. Canada, being closely related to the Imperial system uses imperial ounces. This is why Canada has 341ml bottles. However, we do have 355ml aluminium cans because it's the same as they have in the U.S.

    Probably because 330 ml is 1/3 Litre and 660 is 2/3 Litre. I'm sure it's not related to ounces or pints.

    It is not just the center pin that is different. The C128/Amiga square DINs are a 'W' pattern. The Plus/4 has a square pin pattern. If it was just the center pin you could snip it out of the C128/Amiga DIN and be all set.

    The soft drink from New Zealand Lemon & Paeroa, also known as L&P, is a sweet soft drink manufactured in New Zealand. Created in 1907, it was traditionally made by combining lemon juice with carbonated mineral water from the town of Paeroa, but is now owned and manufactured by multi-national Coca-Cola. When you say Paeroa try saying it "Pie row a" but say quickly as one word (name)

    The off-white "C2N" datasette that you normally see with the Vic-20, PET, and C64 is functionally identical to the black 1531 and I think has a 1530 model number. That said, there are several variations of the internal signal-processing circuit board, and that makes troubleshooting one these a bit of a hassle. The PCB revision on the silkscreen doesn't always match up with the available schematics, and so you have to play a matching game with the PCB layout and schematic, often looking for the one that has a best fit :(

    Same with all of the old commodore bricks until the C128 where they switched over to switch mode supplies. The linear ones go out of spec and start outputting very high voltages. They encased them in resin thinking it would spread the heat better, instead it just fries the caps.

    Not only that the 128 or the Amiga 500 PSU has a 5th center pin but the 4 pins around that are different, the Plus4 PSU's 4 pins are simmetrical (like a square) while the 4 pins around the center pin are not, the top 2 pins are slightly farther from the center pin then the bottom. So even if you were to remove a center pin from a plug you'd still be unable to hook it up to a Plus4's socket.

    375ml is a standard can size in Australia. But there's a lot of variation these days. All the cans in that "form factor" come off the same style of equipment, there's a story, quite possibly apocryphal that the first non-standard can sizes happened because the machine at one manufacturer screwed up and made a bunch of cans which were larger than "normal" and it was cheaper to fill and sell the bigger cans (and a nice marketing gimmick to boot) than it was to re-manufacture them in the right size.
