Effective Tips for Hunting Bucks that Only Live on Your Property Part-Time #hunting
On this week's episode of Midwest Whitetail, we kick things off with Kaleb Greiner who is out picking up cameras on public land. With Iowa's recent law change which prohibits leaving trail cameras overnight, Kaleb collects his cameras and talks about how plans to scout one of his favorite spots ever in the future. Following this, Josh Sparks sets the stage for 2024 and how plans to tag the buck he hunted all of last fall known as "Droptine." . This year Josh is trying to get one step ahead of the buck by unraveling the clues left behind during the 2023 season. With intel coming from encounters, trail cameras, and shed antlers, Josh has a plan that he hopes puts him behind the buck this coming fall. Finally, Mike Reed updates us on the "River Farm" post flood and discusses the two blends of Monsterbuck Soybeans he recently planted and why. As always we appreciate everyone watching and we hope you enjoyed the episode!

Mitchell I appreciate it man. I’m also excited to see if works out! Sometimes you wonder if it’s just foolish hope when you put these “patterns” together but time and time again you see that it has validity as an approach. One of the things I’m most thankful for over the years of editing hunting episodes is the knowledge and strategies I’ve seen people implement. That’s a lots of great minds to learn from first hand and I’ll always try to pay it forward by adding it to the arsenal to chase these deer each fall. Hope there was something to take away in this one for ya and I guess time will tell if it works out.

Excited to see what he does this year! The deer in SW Ohio are waaaayyy ahead of schedule this year! At least 2-3 weeks! I already have a 10pt, wild to me! Y'all seeing that too?

Travis, I'm right there with you in the excitement to see what he does this summer. However, that's as far as I'm getting ahead because he's got to show up in the first place! It seems like you can come up with a plan but who knows the similarities we will see between years 1 & 2. Fortunately, I feel fairly confident with the shed antler history we acquired that his general range stays the same and with intel that folks in the area have known of this deer all the way back to 2019... hopefully that core range continues to shrink and still fall into the property I have the opportunity to hunt. As far as bucks and where they are at in the growing cycle, I don't have much to compare with for you! That being said, I do know of some guys who have bucks that are recognizable from past years so that's pretty cool to see. Equally exciting to hear that you're already seeing bucks to the point you are in Ohio! It definitely gets more and more difficult to focus on anything other than deer once those antlers begin to take shape. Have a great day and thanks for watching the show.

@@JoshSparksMW you're the man! I feel confident that you can seal the deal based on his historical evidence because he's been mature while doing those things. In my experience, you can have a deer all figured out at 2.5 and 3.5 and think he will be the easiest deer in the world to kill, then he hits that 4.5/5.5 year mark and they completely change everything and you gotta refigure em out again!

If there was ever a deer story that is long over due, it’s josh and drop tine! I know for a fact that deer is on his mind everyday and it’s only matter of time before he closes the deal on him! Good luck brotha and I can’t wait to watch it unfold!

I'm right there with you in being eager to see if it works. Within reason, I think it's a plan that at the very least will allow us to be intentional with how to hunt him. Being a small property (relative to the spots I know he ranges), his tolerance as an older buck, and a limited window in when to catch him... any opportunity to be precise is one I want to try and be active on. At the end of the day step one is hoping that he returns and begins to show some similarities to 2023. Reality is that he might not show up for a few months at this point so the only thing to do is the work necessary regardless of the buck that might be the one to utilize it. The cool thing about improving a property for hunting a particular deer is that it also pays dividends for future bucks! This particular area certainly doesn't lack in buck numbers and somme interesting genetic characteristics are certainly present! Hopefully, at some point we showcase an episode where the story closes with this awesome buck and a memory to share. Have a great day Justin!

If nothing else Braydon, it helps pass the time to figure out if we will have an opportunity to put the plan to work. Like I said in the video, I think we're in the game at least if he does return and shows some halfway consistency that mirrors what we think we learned in '23. He's by no means a secret and plenty of people are hunting the deer so it'll be interesting to watch how things unfold. At the end of the day, control what you can control and my approach to that is going to be enforce the plan regardless if he shows up. After all, if he doesn't do it maybe one of these other bucks will. Thanks for watching and hopefully it had something to take away to help out in your neck of the woods! Good luck this fall and thanks for watching.

Aaron Goeppner, I think figuring out something that can sustain tonnage throughout the year will definitely be beneficial. Considering that the "plot" is fairly small, it's something to take into account when food only helps if it will be there to hunt over during season. As of now, I'm still leaning towards that Rut Greens PLUS Cold Climate mix for this particular location. However, enhancing the strips of clover with something like the chicory blend might be a good punch to add to the mix. Any particular reason why you'd be recommending the chicory in this situation? Thanks for the conversation and insight man and hope you enjoyed the video. Also, I hope to be able to share some pictures with Droptine this fall but I'm going to just start with him returning to hunt in the first place! Have a great day.

I sure appreciate it man! Hopefully it's a plan that's got some validity as we near opening day in Iowa. For me, there's nothing more fun than getting to continue to watch/learn how wildlife utilizes different properties in different situations. Obviously on this video we hyper-focused on Droptine, but there was so much to take away from the general wildlife that we learned. Hopefully, we get the chance to try and hunt the buck here in '24! Thanks for watching and following along with the team here at Midwest Whitetail.

  • @MidwestWhitetailVideos

    Ай бұрын

TheAshesofthewake9g, that's a great question! Really I think it all depends on where the antler falls. Some of the antlers were in great shape that were in taller grasses, open areas, etc. and some were chewed up pretty good. On this particular property there's a pretty low density of squirrels which seems to be a big culprit of chewed up antlers in Iowa. Thanks for watching and I'm excited to keep updating on this particular project/buck. -Josh
