100 is not enough and ones too many. My father repeated this to me growing up as i stand here in alcholism and from all isms you could say. You are raw abd real in this and I salute for truth over judgement. Thank you.

Black and white is a different world, it takes you into this dreamlike state. It is cinema in its purest form for me. Even though you know you're watching a movie, you get swept into its world anyway. Magic. Colour is always reminiscent of reality and needs more tricks to create a different world. Harder to put the difference into words than I thought it would be. Black and white movies are their own reality, where colour grabs onto ours.

I guess black &white does a few things. One other thing it does, with me at least, it grabs more attention. It makes you watch more closely. And silent even more, btw. Yet, overall, I'd say black and white is the most intense.

This is one of the few films that delves into the mind of a raging alcoholic. It is really raw and in your face. Going from when the main character was doing really well and spirals out of control into alcoholic insanity. Even shows a sense of the Delirium Tremens, alcoholic hallucinations. This movie was made at a time when Alcoholics Anonymous was still in it's infancy, rehab was brutal if you could get in, and nonexistent in many areas of the country. Treatments included being locked into an asylum, being given the belladonna treatment, drinking sauerkraut juice and honey. It was really rough back in those days from what I've heard from the old timers. As far as this movie... lets just say it's helped me on my road of recovery. 14 years :) Oh two other movies I recommend on alcoholism: 'My Name is Bill W' with James Woods and James Garner and the second one is 'When Love is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story' with Wynona Ryder.

My ex became an alcoholic (thankfully long ‘recovered’). I saw it unfold in real time. It’s horrible. I felt like I was in a nightmare and I got a form of PTSD from it (he doesn’t even remember it, it’s all a haze to him 🙄). I can sit and watch films like this though (and Days of Wine and Roses) with an almost morbid fascination.

Great review. The theremin was the musical instrument that later became associated with SF movies ('The Day The Earth Stood Still'). Composer Miklos Rozsa used the theremin here (and in Hitchcock's 'Spellbound') to represent psychosis. Both Milland and Wyman had appeared in light comedies and romantic films before being cast in this film. Both proved they could handle much more serious material.

God this movie was so dark and disturbing, the desperate addict behaviors are on point, the Oscars were earned, and it's a star in the firmament of Film Noir, a genre built from all things dark and disturbing.

Devastating analysis about the consequences of the vice of alcohol, maybe the most devastating ever come from Hollywood, and a masterpiece of the earlier career of Wilder. But I have to say...I am not agree with the ending. Let's analyze it: The point of view of the movie is the main character's, and it's totally destructive, hopeless. But suddenly that point of view changes, from subjective to objective, returning the story to the beginning and doing Wilder the reverse of the initial shot: instead of coming to the intimacy of Don's little world, it goes out to the city, giving a collective vision, and that vision carries some compassion and pity that, of course, don't allow the story finish with the tragic original ending that, in my opinion, could have been better...

@@RazorwireReviews those things are a dime a dozen. I stopped checking out random updates and collection videos a long time ago. Everybody has the same movies. Only the "boutique guys" have some interesting titles. The fuck do I care if people have Aquaman and 21 Jump Street. They all go through every marvel movie and say how awesome they are. Or my favourite was: it's not that great, but you've got to have it. What?
