EFAP's current stance on "Woke"

If it's preachy, if it's ideologically driven, if it only exists because when they were pitching this they went "First of all, diversity. Secondly, strong female characters. blah blah". If the story doesn't matter, if the character doesn't matter, but the message does. That's what I consider woke and in those cases I hate it to my core. I hate it when people shove their stupid nonsense down my throat. If the story's good and/or if the characters are good and/or if the gameplay is good, then I'll either not mind or tolerate it.

In Norse Mythology- Thor was akin to the greek heros Hercules or Achilles. Strong, arrogant, and an alcoholic with a temper. Thor's shortcomings lead to his trials and tribulations during which he learns of the inevitability of Ragnarok and attempts to atone for the grief he caused others as a youth.

So I want to push back against what Mauler said about doing action scenes first and writing the story around that. They acknowledged in on of the EFAPs how MI: Fallout was written with the action scenes first, and then the movie around those, and then say that works fine. Even though I'm pretty sure there was no reason to sky dive into the club. Aside from that, I think it is reasonable, especially for a movie where the action is the draw, to come up with action scenes and write the story around that as long as the story isn't nonsense.

"as long as the story isn't nonsense." That's what happened with Transformers 2. Because of the writers strike, all they had planned when starting to work on that film was the action scenes. The result was a movie that is basically: action scene - exposition - action scene - unfunny Michael Bay humor - exposition - action scene

I think there's a linguistic confusion going on here. What MauLer is saying is that the message (or anything for that matter) shouldn't take precedent over the story (as in, within the story) not anything about the methodology used to create the story. Tons of writers have written stories with a political message in mind without affecting the quality of the writing. MI did build the story around the setpieces, however the story itself doesn't bend in service of those setpieces (I assume, I haven't seen it yet). The skydiving into the club scene should be perfectly fine as long is it doesn't contradict anything set-up prior.

EFAP and the drinker have been perfectly clear that they only care about the quality of the story, and these two GOW games have had really great stories, every character is well-written, and makes choices that make sense for their established character, and everything within a vacuum also makes sense within the larger GOW mythos and series.

I think some people are just on too high of an alert because of the past decade, so many of our favourite series or franchises have been ruined or “subverted” that some people jump at anything that could be a “red flag”. I’m of the opinion that story/characters are the most important things in creative media like Film/TV. Gameplay is number 1 in video games to me. GoW 2018 and Ragnorok are great, so many good things that far outweigh the bad, generally speaking.

I don't know what you have played, but it wasn't the same games that I know. These stories are bad, the characters are annoying with few exceptions. In Ragnarök it gets really bad. They broke the entire cosmology and rewrote the entire northern mythology to make this stupid preachy californian soap opera sitcom plot "work". Everyone's instant reaction is "but the greek games weren't super accurate!": Those were true in their core and only turned everything up to eleven and after the Box was opened things went justifiably bonkers. The Norse games are random things that got norse names slapped on to them that the VAs can't even pronounce. This was made by the same people that constantly complain about "cultural appropriation", and they lie about Kratos's past as well, making him say things that make no sense, are simply false. For example, he already was worshipped by the Spartans after he took over the seat of Ares. Or this nonsense that for him everything was just about revenge, when it was always justice. Even Asura in Asura's Wrath, who is more of a rage-monster than Kratos, understood that, and Kratos is a way more intelligent guy than Asura. But hey, let's marry a godlike woman who only uses him to start her very own revenge plot to use Kratos to kill a pantheon - wait a minute, isn't that parallel to what Athena used Kratos for, and the very types of manipulations that he hates the gods for? He should have been furious at this woman once he found out and just leave these lands altogether.

The difference between Kratos and Angrboda is that Kratos in universe is an outside element to the Norse background and treated as such (the same but to a lesser extent is true of Mimir). Angrboda on the otherhand is inserted into the story with only a handwave away to explain why she is as she is in an ill-fitting setting and they just want us to pretend that it's fine.

Noone in this discussion knows anything about the actual Norse Mythology.

  • @Adorni

Mauler’s point about Kratos both does and doesn’t have merit- he’s right that a Greek being present in Norse Mythology and being Loki’s dad is a larger issue, but he’s wrong that virtue of Kratos being there is a bigger issue- Kratos is said to have crossed through some kind of dimensional threshold to reach Midgard, so he is not actually _from_ the area. Angrboda, however, is. Alongside some of the other people who weren’t native to the land, which is a bit jarring. And someone might say “well there you go, you _just_ said Kratos came here, so clearly Angrboda’s family came from Africa or something.” Except it’s never even suggested that that’s what happened. It’s not very good world building, and it comes across as though Santa Monica were doing diversity casting, and Angrboda was the one they felt they could “get away with.” And given that Kratos - a literal white man from Greece - is mo-capped by a stuntman from California and voiced by a black dude, why, exactly, does Angrboda _need_ to look black? Because they needed to tick a box? Because black people are so easy to please that they see one person with dark skin and dreadlocks and start whooping and hollering? Does this mean that, if Kratos goes to Africa, we’ll see some white gods mixed in with the black ones? How about Mexicans? Or Polynesians? Or does it only matter when it’s *one* group’s mythological playground? Because I don’t think that’s a very good idea.

All it comes down to is whether you personally believe it or not it's not even a big deal in thr slightest. They managed to recontextualize her being the mother of the worldserpent just fine.

Does the concept of “world building” mean nothing at all, anymore? Or is only a non-issue when **only one** cultural mythology has other ethnicities just hanging around sticking out like sore thumbs because “well, there’s just not enough diversity, here.” I do not personally care of a black person voices a Norse character. It’s a video game, you can cast whoever you want. What I _do_ care about is whether or not something that claims to take place in Norse mythology can actually afford to have all its on-screen **characters** from Norse mythology actually be Norse, rather than dipped in hot chocolate and throwing around hair snakes. Angrboda is not Norse any more than Atreus is Loki. She is a modern black kid, who happens to be named after a Norse giantess for some reason I cannot comprehend.

Love this! This is exactly how I feel about this stuff. Mauler has such a way with words and manages to communicate exactly how most of us feel about labeling something without thinking about it. For those of you on the left, right, or whatthefuckever, The quality of a story cannot be summed up by simple words or phrases that only point out the most superficial of elements within it. It's summed up by every spoken and written word, every action the characters take, every event that takes place, and every worldbuilding seed planted. I find it fascinating and frustrating that many people on both sides of the political spectrum who clearly worked hard to get to where they are and/or are very savvy in their field can't seem to fully wrap their heads around judging a narrative based on plain old logic and reason. You know, something that pretty much everyone was taught to do since they were goddamn kids. I guess they're just so blinded by their ideology that they can't see past it when analyzing literally anything that has nothing to do with politics.

Problem is the wokeness is pretty much everywhere in entertainment up to the executive levels of these companies. It's almost completely unavoidable in anything out of Hollywood or the west coast companies because a lot of them have literal quotas for this crap. So they're right the overwhelming majority of the time they call it out. At this point it's the exception in Western entertainment to not be woke because not only is run by the woke socialist crowd, but they're absolutely insistent on making sure it's the only things that gets seen. Which is why manga and other foreign entertainment is getting popular while Western sales plummet. Saying entertainment doesn't have a wokeness problem is like saying the Catholic Church and teaching professions don't have a kiddie diddler problem. They definitely do and the solution is simple enough to both of them.

I don't think the problem is the word. The problem is people's usage of the word. The word 'woke' has a specific definition. It is when the politics of the writers or directors overtake the story and mess it up/ruin it. Those politics are usually on the left side of the spectrum; mainly, feminist, racial, or LGBT. It is when they insert these things into the plot, and it takes over the plot when it shouldn't. Though there are instances where these things are in certain stories and it is perfectly natural. But the problem is when it is forced. The problem is that now people are oversensitive to these things now. Mainly because this woke stuff has ruined a lot of movie franchises, books, comics, videogames, etc. Now, people are criticizing these things in stories where they are not ruining the plot, cause they have been burned before and are now oversensitive to them.

I can understand being oversensitive, but it's important to remain fair and unbiased when criticising media. That's the whole point of objective criticism. Even if most media has had a lot common tropes that people would count as 'woke', you should remain open-minded and give all stories a fair chance. It's not enough to say: "Other media did bad things and so you can't blame me for jumping to conclusions with GoW." You have to remove your biases and look at the story for what it is.

This game is an insult to anyone's intellect. They copied every bad movie idea from the last ten years, especially the MCU, just like Bayonetta 3, and ducttaped them together. These are uncreative hacks. They even invented the cosmic giant that they then actually called "Ragnarök". No, that's not a thing. And once he arrived they decided to not want to use him afterwards... they talked Surtr into ending his life for this, and the next minute they don't want him anymore for the siege because of "muh collateral". Are you joking!? Yes, this is the TLJ of God of War. Also, Freya and Frigga are not the same Goddess. That's a very recent misinterpretation, but these hacks needed their story to work somehow. Hence why they had to completely rewrite Fenrir, Jormungandr and Hel. Hel is just a title now, instead of the daughter of Loki and Angrboda... great... but hey "it's well acted, right? riiiight? so it's okay!" Thor has a hangover and throws up from a tiny bit of mead... the guy who took three gulps from the ocean, because he was tricked into it, which is what brought us the tides. Barfs from a bit of mead... right. I say it's about time to flay some native american and black african myths in the most insulting ways. Or, to do something actually useful: Make a game that really mocks all the Socialists of history into oblivion while showcasing how their deranged, insane policies bring nothing but misery and death. @@whisped8145 I fully agree, do you think EFAP are getting sorta leftie nowadays? I don't understand how people can't see that if it has socialist talking points, overt feminist messaging, and race swapping (especially when it's a whole real world group of people's religion but also on a much less significant scale like a culturally significant IP) it makes it automatically terrible from it's inception. It's the intention behind these things, the point behind it all is to destabilize society, so you should absolutely destroy these things on every level, a little bit is unacceptable, even if it's written well (which I seriously doubt this game is).

Really? Drinker comes across as fairly balanced to me when compared to other 'counter-culture' media critics like Geeks & Gamers or Nerdrotic, who fit more into your given template imo. He does give credit where credit is due even when the subject is a part of 'the message' and as far as I've seen only calls out political messaging when it is there (and usually explicitly stated by the creators of the media being discussed themselves). Mauler and him seem the most apolitical of the bunch to me, though Mauler takes the cake in that front.

That's because companies like to put their wokest elements in their trailers and promos because it's a giant virtue signal. Check out the cast and writers interviews for the Rings of Power or any number of films/tv shows like Batwoman or the Eternals. All they talk about is how diverse the cast is and how important representation is. When that's their attitude, you can tell that storytelling has taken a backseat to their ideology. That generally leads to poor character writing and lack of consistency.

I mean, it could just be because she’s black…and there’s absolutely no reason you need to race swap characters. Is that bad for some reason? I rolled my eyes when I saw the girl because I knew she was not authentic to Norse mythology and there’s only one conceivable reason for that; preemptively quelling outcry from the diversity crowd. She’s fine, it’s not a big deal…but it’s eyeroll worthy for sure. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like their perceived reasoning for doing it at all. If I was having a chat with the creators and they said they cast her because she was the creators niece (for example) my objection would vanish. Nepotism isn’t a big deal if you get a good end product but pandering is gross, especially when you’re preemptively capitulating to crazy people that care more for diversity than authenticity.

  • @EmptyAltruism

Also, to clarify, I don’t think GoWR is woke. I only object to pandering to diversity crowds by sacrificing authenticity. That is all. All in all, seems fine. But I don’t see a need for the change so why change the mythology? I’d be annoyed as hell if they announced Blade was being played by vanilla ice. But I wouldn’t say it’s woke. I’d say it’s an unnecessary ethnicity swap and a departure from the character because part of a character is how they look. It’s pretty simple stuff really.

I’ve really grown to despise that word and physically cringe whenever I hear or read someone using it unironically. It is just a word you use to describe a thing you don’t like when you’re on the right - that’s it. And the word has such a vague, wide interpretation that black characters existing and openly communistic themes are both used as evidence that a piece of media is ‘woke,’ which is self-evidently absurd as I don’t even know what the person means. If you dislike the presence of minority characters, say that. If you dislike left wing themes, say that. But don’t rely upon the word “woke” to do the heavy lifting for you and act as if you’ve described the problem when you haven’t. All you’ve done is invoked the correct buzzword so everyone who agrees with you knows to clap like seals while adding nothing of value. There may have been a time where you could attribute some value to the word and use it correctly but that time has long since passed. I don’t use it anymore and I hope everyone else soon follows suit.

It doesn’t ruin the game but I’m simply done giving leeway as I’ve seen that not objecting to the little things only encourages them to go further in the future. I kinda miss wolf just because wolf was the person amongst the efap hosts who seemed to most understand the issues forcing diversity caused. I wonder if mauler had changed his opinion on it slightly for the sake of optics or just over time changed because watching old efap and he seemed to agree that forcing diversity had a tangible link to lowering quality in stories
