    Unfortunately I believe I have cracked The Acolyte. The witches made Smilo Ren first, but he turned out to be too unstable and evil because he was just one person (ala Anakin) so they locked him away. Then they created the twins and they were the good ones because they formed a diad (ala Rey and Kylo). The jedi found and released Smilo, and he killed all the witches. This is why the jedi feel guilty. This also lets them use the excuse that he's not a Sith because he's actually from the witch cult. Ugh.

    One problem RLM have is that in a way, they *are* "the discourse." They've been so big and so influential for so long, that they're constantly being quoted and memed in various contexts that may have nothing to do with them, other than the fact that one of them, at some point, expressed something pithily or funnily enough for it to stick in people's minds. And they've inspired a lot of very popular creators in various ways. I think of it a bit like a very niche Beatles, in the sense that if you're involved in nerd culture and/or media, it's virtually impossible for their existence to not have had some effect on you, even if it's that you don't want to be like them at all. Even if you've never watched them, you've likely watched someone they've influenced, which in turn influenced you in some way. Even if you're an alien that's just been dropped into current online pop culture/nerd discussions, you may not bring anything RLM related to the table, but the table's already been set by people who do. I think they somewhat resent that they're not just alone out there doing their thing, that they're being quoted in contexts they don't necessarily agree with, or that they come up in some way or another in conversations they don't want to participate in. So they end up doing stupid shit like spending lots of time on stuff they don't necessarily want to be perceived as involved in, which of course just involves them further. Whoever said that they should've just done their review without addressing any meta commentary was spot on, IMO. Or better yet, they should probably let go of Star Wars, because they've already said years ago that they think the SW universe has nowhere to go, they obviously don't care about it, and they, generally speaking, mostly don't enjoy it. Which is fine, except that when you were once a huge SW-related deal, and then you get bored and become a SW normie, people who were with you before tend to not particularly enjoy your lackluster takes. Also worth mentioning that they were always a bit stand-off-ish with their audience, were never particularly respectful of other people (that's fine), were generally rather insular as far as content creators go, and when they did do stuff with other people it ended up biting them in the ass a couple times, so I'm not about to suddenly start clutching my pearls over it. I'm not mad, I'm just momentarily mildly disappointed. Either way, they'll do what they will. I'm personally with Rags on this one; since I don't enjoy their current film/tv discussions except when they're super passionate about something (Star Trek), I don't watch that, but they make plenty of other stuff that I love and watch. And I managed to make that decision all by myself, even before they said I should. How about that.

    I always imagined lightsabers using static photons, kept in place by a shield, interuptable by force, like a thrust. That would make them light but high in velocity. In a world with blasters, it would be a powerfull defense weapon for a force user able to predict the exact position of shots before they hit, but for normal people it would be nothing more than a powerfull and expensive welding tool. Everyone could wield a lightsaber but everyone without the force could just be shot at range.

    I do appreciate Theo's takes. The series hasn't quite gotten stale for me, but it does feel tired, and pattern memorizing as Theo mentions is not really compelling gameplay wise when things have become more and more wild. Bloodborne is still very much up there in my mind still, though Sekiro will remain my favorite overall combat system in the series. The camera at times made me feel like I was playing armored core 6 again, though its weirder in ER since the lock-on wont break and my neck gets snapped as it spins about lol. I will say some weapons dont feel as viable as others though. Tank and spank as always works though, just doesn't feel as good when the game really feels like it wants to be sekiro, not souls. Methinks the combat system wants to evolve past what it is now. .

From my perspective not a single thing he mentioned about the gameplay holds any water other than it not being to his subjective taste. I do agree with the legacy dungeons though. I also want them to finally step up their NPC game. I want more of them, more dialogue, more dynamic and complex behaviour, it's insane they are still exactly like in Demon's Souls.

    So i haven't had a chance to see the Acolyte majority of this video yet, but i do have something for theo on the Ekden ring portion, specifically about Rellana and her Twin moon attack. He's wrong to say that the move is poorly design because getting hit by one moon locks you into getting hot by the rest of the Attack. It isn't poor design for an attack to lock down a player like that, the problem with the move is the fact that it's unreadable. Contrast it to Rennala's Full moon attack. The Carian Queen floats up and furls into a projectile absorbing ball before flip out of it as it flies towards you. You can tell from the first time she uses it what it does and how to avoid it, and have plenty of time to avoid it. Anf then you have Rellana, who summons two of the same projectiles, but doesn't fling them at you, and doesn't need to hit you with it to deal massive damage to you. As long as you aren't in the air or in i frames it catches. Of course, after seeing the move once, it is something much easier to avoid than some other Elden ring ultimate attacks, no names here, but there's nothing about the moves appearance, the level before the fight, or the other attacks the boss uses that informs you how to deal with it

  • @Theottree

    @Theottree

    Күн бұрын

    So my main problem is that it's unreadable; I just don't think it's necessarily a very good idea to be putting self-combo attacks in a game with such issues with readability. Especially especially when it does so much damage. Player is left guessing as to their first response, and if they guess wrong, it's likely that they die on the spot. I don't think that's great. But yes, I do completely agree that the readability is the much greater issue

  • @Grishnag85

    I don't mind the fact that the move fakes you out with the moons bieng thrown on the ground to create an explosion i like that it fakes you out since you have seen that move before with Rennala so you assume it's going to get thrown at you. I don't like however that you basically die the first time you see the move because you don't have the information what it does nor do you know how to deal with it, if it was just a two hit combo that you could survive then fine but it isn't. I also really don't like how you need 72 int to use this spell on your own and it is one if the worst spells in the game

    Prior to the sequel crap, I always thought it used to be the case that force sensitives had to learn how to use the force. There was no Rey or Broom boy. If the Jedi didn't train you and a Sith didn't get hold of you, you would never have even known you were force sensitive. At best, it might materialise in being good at something, esp. if you're very force sensitive, but you wouldn't be walking about moving things with your mind. The Jedi wouldn't be so adamant that you join, unless there were exceptional circumstances but even Anakin and Luke weren't forced to do so. At most, they'd just want to record that you are force sensitive and then maybe check in from time to time (likely undercover) just to make sure a Sith hadn't found you.

    I'd honestly feel better if RLM admitted to being Trekkies, preferring Star Trek over Star Wars. That way, it makes more sense why their Star Wars reviews aren't as good because they aren't as invested in the series as much as they are with Star Trek. As it is, I think their takes on Star Wars and their reviews are some of the worst critiques I've seen about Star Wars, filled to the brim with strawmen, poorly researched criticisms, false allegations and a whole lot of fan whinging that doesn't amount to anything than an entitled fan not getting what they want. Personally, I'm indifferent about Red Letter Media. I don't think they're bad as Anomaly Inc makes them out to be, yet I don't think they're as good as Mauler, Drinker or Nerdrotic make them out to be. Sometimes they make good observations about the culture, like the whole "Don't ask questions. Just consume product and be excited for next product" and the "LOYALTY TO DISNEY. LOYALTY TO THE BRAND" comments. Yet when I watch their Star Wars critiques, I'm often asking myself "Guys, did you even watch the same movie as me? You missed this, this and this points." As it is, I think they're extremely overrated and I think the latest slate of KZread critics who were fans or inspired by RLM (like the before mentioned Mauler, Drinker or Nerdrotic) have managed to be more entertaining and informative than these guys in much the same way how Anomaly Inc has surpassed his inspiration, Chris Stuckman. In short, RLM sucks at critiquing Star Wars. Stop pretending you guys know Star Wars better than the people you look down on like the prequel fans or even George Lucas himself.

    I think the problem with Elden Ring and the reason there's so many cheap moves from the bosses is that the playerbase have gotten so good at dodging and using I-frames that they have to employ these methods to trip players up, they've cornered themselves with the terrible system that is I-frames

  • @aabaaa9993

    @aabaaa9993

    Күн бұрын

    @@Soapy-chan In the context of Elden Ring and other Soulsborne games, a few reasons: No other defensive method compares with temporary invincibility, because of that the series has become entirely about memorizing enemy movesets and pressing a single button at the right time. It removes any complexity and greatly limits how dynamic a battle can be to a single strategy. Since rolling is the only obvious viable stratagy the game leads players to and is now what the series is known for, Fromsoft have good reason not to make shields and magical defences viable in-game, making them equal in effectiveness to rolling while keeping the same kind of challange wouldn't be easy for them to do, so they don't. Meaning each boss needs to be designed to hit the player when their I-frames have expired and one of the ways to do this is to make the player press it early with fakeout attacks that have similer animations to their real attacks, to catch players off guard by making single attacks similar to their combo attacks. Holding their weapon in the air before swinging for annoyingly long times making so many players panic roll, which is made even worse when sometimes the weapon swings at a level of acceleration that's not displayed by the boss in other attacks, how quickly they can go from one attack to another as if inertia means nothing. In other games [Battlefield for example] you're not making calculations in your head when using a grenade launcher to estimate where it'll go, you're using your gut feeling and experience to predict the curve it'll take to impact your target. Fromsoft know that if you see a boss jump at X speed in Y direction and you see the beginning of the curve, you'll be able to predict where its attack will land and roughly when, even if you can't see the boss in the air, so they employ dirty tricks like making the boss pause mid-air and/or come down at you at a faster speed than they should with acceleration that shouldn't be possible, or even stupidly able to home in on you like a missile. There's also no reason for them to fix the camera because it adds further difficulty to the fights. I could go on, but this is long enough. Fromsoft have all these cheap and annoying tricks and more in almost all their bosses making fights frustratingly annoying and hard to enjoy. Its also pretty weird to see the double standard on EFAP and within the community.. EFAP and fans when they see campfire in space: Lol! So stupid, fire doesn't work like that! Terrible job. EFAP and fans when Elden Ring bosses' weapon goes right through their bodies but doesn't harm them because I-frames: Awesome game

    54:30 Gary hits on something here that I've recently been thinking about. With the wide range of content available at an instant on numerous platforms, we've effectively invoked longterm infantilization of future generations. It used to be that, sure, there were some kid shows, but they were primarily play on Saturday mornings from 7-noon. Everything else was made for adults, but with general viewing in mind so that it wasn't explicitly for adults. Kids had some cartoons to watch, but they and the family at large general watched things like Seinfeld or MASH or what have you - made for adults but accessible for all. Today, kids have full access to baby shit that coddles them or is just a spastic active retardation, like much of what's on youtube and tik tok. It drives me nuts when someone excuses something as being poorly written "because it's for kids" in general because that's not an excuse when there's some really excellent kids stuff and we should be encouraging them to think rather than zone, but it's ever moreso important to provide QUALITY kids programming when that's what they'll be watching at any given hour of any given day if they're not going to grow up on something that's both adult-oriented and thoughtful, like classic Star Trek.

    Theo's right about Shadow of the Erdtree being "Elden Ring turned up to 11," but I adored Elden Ring and he didn't, so it's really no big surprise that he hates the DLC and I love it. I've been having a blast with the new weapons, locations, and bosses (except for one) so far. It's just always sad when someone hates a game you, yourself, love.

    Yeah, the really sad part is that he said we're brainwashed/gaslighting ourselves into liking it and he's waaay better than us and has beaten challenges we can't even imagine...

    @@BaldorfBreakdowns To be honest, I skipped the second half of the Elden Ring discussion because I wanted to watch the panel make fun of Acolyte defenders. I expect they'll do a full EFAP on Shadow of the Erdtree, but I it'll most likely be a repeat of the original Elden Ring EFAP, since a lot of the issues in the base game (repeat bosses, wonky camera, etc.) are still very present in the DLC and I absolutely acknowledge those as flaws.

    He's that condescending dude who thinks he's better than the rest because he doesn't like a popular game. He's the meme of the guy alone in a corner thinking to himself "They don't know I'm too good to like Elden Ring..." A cautionaary tale if youwill, don't let your hatred for a game define your entire being (seriously, he shits on Elden Ring at least once per appearance, what a miserable guy)

    Wo wo hold on.. episode 5 was supposed to be the " better than Darth maul fight"? Wtf I thought we still had that coming with how mediocre the ep 5 fight was So many lightsaber fights now are just spinning twirling and aiming at the other lightsaber as opposed to actual sword fighting where you're supposed to aim for the other person

    The original Murder on the Orient Express is NOT good! Poirot never gets any proof of the murder victim's identity outside of what his murderers tell him!
