That's not uncommon with through hole parts, just variability in the hand soldering. The other side was fine, the solder just didn't flow through on two pins.

Yeah, Vegas does that on me too. My last video I put the Alienware laptop on the deck when it was 10 below. It processed the 4K video no problem that time.. 15 minute processed in just under 45 minutes without fire.

The actual zooming in at 6:08 just didn't look smooth to me. And when you slow the video to 0.25x you can see it jump stepping the zoom more than it should for the frame rate. 30 fps x 0.25 = 7.5 fps but it seemed like about half that number of steps while zooming. I did expect this to be in 25 fps for Australia though? Was it recorded at 25 and processed and uploaded at 30 fps? IDK...

Yes, slightly lighter on the base than the Canon, and the mics seems to be directional, so there is more discrepancy between left and right channel depending upon which side of the camera I'm on.

Good review. I might pick one up just to have a bang about meter instead of carrying my Fluke everywhere. The 4K was really good. You could even see your reflection in the solder joint when you did your first zoom on the ICL right around 2:45.

On 4K you can really see where the camera focuses. This is not that apparent in 1080p. The camera seems to have a small depth of field. Maybe decreasing the apperture size will improve this. But this is really just nitpicking and loads better than 1080p. Love the sound quality too!

Great review and teardown, the 4K looks fantastic. I don't have a great audio setup (a dickey 30+ yo boombox wired in) but there was nothing bad in the sound. The icky soldering did show very clearly though. I am very curious as to why that transistor didn't have any solder on two legs (at least on the topside) but if it wasn't worth pointing out then I'm going to guess it's not a big deal for whatever reason.

The soldering isn't actually too bad, when you consider it's probably RoHs solder.(no lead). That type of solder is not as shiny as Lead/Tin solder, and it requires higher temperature. If you're planning on using that meter, I would highly recommend re-soldering the ICL8069 voltage reference. Even though it's probably soldered just fine on the other side of the board, I never really trust those vias on double sided circuit boards. If you flow solder on the top side of those boards, it would help ensure more consistent voltage readings.

Yes the video quality is excellent. I do not have experience with LCDs, but believe they are ac driven and the phasing relationship determines which segments turn on. If that is true, then wouldn't it be possible to switch from the negative view to the positive view by reversing the phasing? I like that dark background for inside work, and it would be neat to have another switch, (or an ambient light sensor), that would switch to the positive view and switch the illumination off when the meter was being used in a bright area.

  • @KeepOnTesting
    @KeepOnTesting6 жыл бұрын

I don't understand your disdain for the LCD screen? I have this DMM in my hands right now. My eyes see it quite differently. Bold segments that are easy to read and clear as day. Bright and spacious display with space to spare. Amazing considering how small this meter is. It's not OLED or EBTN but it's damn good nonetheless. Maybe you acquired a dud. Even good batteries are cheap as borscht nowadays so battery life really shouldn't be a factor. What's the deal? I think it's a step forward unlike some new meter displays that seem stuck in the "90s. Btw, the meter ships in a nice OEM case. More new meters should do the same!

I have a lot of multimeters including the Fluke 87V, i bought this one (in the ZOYI ZT-X variant) out of curiosity as i liked the layout, and have to say im most impressed, its now my go to meter. the display is gorgeous, yes its not clear outside, but i can't remember the last time i used a DMM outside, and if i need to have have others that can fulfil that task. I paid just over £21 on Ebay for this meter. So what if the display will use more batteries? had it a month now and used it most days, without changing the batteries. There is a battery hack which i have just purchased and will mod the meter when the batteries need replacement. I have checked both the resistance readings and DC volts with calibrated reference checkers and find this meter to be as accurate as some of my very expensive meters.

I was wondering if that relay drew current all the time or not. By the way Dave, the newer 8009 does have the NCV in place of square wave generator and also has temp probe - unfortunately the 8009 still doesnt have the missing ranges you spoke of. If they added the ranges, replaced the power hog display with an updated LCD one, rework the tilting bale maybe they could keep the push buttons and with these mods have a good upgrade model from the 8009. I have an 8009 and its been great, had high hopes for the Q1 but looks like they didnt think this one through, the design just isnt practical in its current form.

Dave, with all the negative remarks you gave about the display, wouldn't it be a good part of the teardown, to try and flip the polarisor foil to see if that works to invert the display. This because I believe the MM will keep working below this 2.5V threshold. Yes the led will cut off but the meter will still be usable like his cheaper brother. With all the measurements within good spec I love this meter, because I dislike the dail and would love pushbutton. Makes one handed work much easier.

The comment about the higher bitrate on 1080P is only true if you watching on a browser that support the VP9 codec officially. That is to say half of the mobile devices with 2K screen are still streaming MP4 because it’s more recognized and has hardware built in GPU instructions for better battery life even if you tablet or laptop support up to 2K and 4K. So now youtube won’t encode MP4 in anything higher then 1080. Unless you can download google chrome web browsers but again some devices don’t support VP9 including TV, and other things that even have googles own app installed on them. So you can have a smart 4K TV that may not play a real 4K or better 1080P. And if it’s is playing 4K it might just be upscaling it. Even most andriod devices can’t run VP9, and it seems VP9 is more processor heaving killing batteries faster on laptops if you do force Firefox to run it. But mobile browsers or safari, sorry. So if IPad Pro owners and other high end tablet or laptop owners are wondering what happened to the 1440 (2K)option, now you know. MPG has been officially accepted and supported by almost everything, but google is forcing their now codes down your throat. Name a song,e camera that records in the video format, so it doesn’t matter what wrapper codec your camera records in, KZread changes it completely anyway. Even if it’s a little sharper, still It would be better if they rolled out open support for everyone before changing KZread over. I’m not going to go buy a new tablet TV because of this, google can bite me. So you won’t be seeing any 4K uploads from me until VP9 is an adopted standard and has built in support on processors and GPUs without the need to go buy new hardware or the latest andriod device. Seems like abuse of power if you ask me.

Did you ever mention anything about the poor solder welds on the 3-pole transmogrifier?

No. That's common for through-hole parts, just variability in the hand soldering.

Yeah that's what I thought was the point of the thumbnail. I couldn't see any solder on the other two leads _at all_ and was super surprised that you didn't mention it.

video looked sharp & nice even on 1080p however if you can't edit the video in reasonable time (those crashes must be annoying) I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. Maybe it's time to switch to a new editing software or have someone else do the editing for you.

The old AN8008 is < $16 these days. There's a new AN8009 model with more functionality. I'd probably still recommend the old one, especially at this price.
