The Lord Protector Edward Seymour and Lord Dudley promote the marriage plan between Edward VI and Mary, Queen of Scots, but Edward is not very keen on the match.

Edward has basically always been a non-entity in Tudor adaptations, so to see him being allowed to be a real person and a Tudor at that! It's really great to see! And the young man they've cast in the role is magnificent, really perfect at walking the line between child and king without making either part ridiculous. I hope he does well in the future.

@@ArtemisScribe well he SHOULD be younger. When Edward took the throne he was 9 years old. Elizabeth was 13 and Mary was 30. The former two were clearly aged up for the series. Edward was 15 years old when he died. He says that Mary Queen of Scots is 5 in this which would make Edward BARELY 11 here in reality.

That is becasue Edward VI is not some sweet child but a gifted politician and well-educated Boy who knew he was being played by his adult council members. South of the wear it's a significant local road and south of the Tees it's the A1 motorway - the locals here dug it up and demolished the bridges as they were sick of armies going backwards and forwards along it - even English and Welsh soldiers raped and pillaged their way through not just the Scots.

Francis died while Mary was raised away from Scotland while it became more Protestant and when she returned as Catholic had fickle support and France started to have its own civil issues sur to religion and succession because of Mary Queen of Scots mothers family the De Guises who were raising up trouble in france that started the whole thing.

Right, of course none of them could forsee the future. I felt for Mary. After Francis died and she lost the French crown and French military backing, it was all over for her. I have to give her credit for her strength of character and will through it all, especially when her secretary Rizzio was murdered right in front of her as she stood heavily pregnant with the heir to the Scottish throne. I was shocked to read how the Scottish Lord's manhandled her. She really was doomed once she returned. No support from her treacherous Lord's, a traitor for a brother, and a psycho for a husband... @@thehistoryfreak13 That may be true, yet Elizabeth made mistakes too, but Elizabeth was wise enough to do what needed to be done in the end to rectify the mistakes. I agree, Mary was impulsive and impatient. For example, I believe Lord Darnley had contracted either syphilis or smallpox and was possibly dying? (Marrying him was politically smart because with both their claims to England, their son would unite Britannia), yet had Mary waited, she would have been rid of him naturally. The one mistake that cost her tho was not arresting Bothwell after Darnley's murder. She married him which upset Scots of every class. I believe she was already pregnant with Bothwell's twins which is why she did it. She may have felt Bothwell was the only person she could trust.. anyhow, it was a grave mistake that cost her everything. Also Mary was too nice. Mary at least did right in providing an heir, something Elizabeth failed at doing. I agree about the Catholic thing... Mary was aware of the hostility toward her as a Catholic, yet she was too willful. She stood on principle, she made the mistake of thinking she could charm her way out of the hostility, not. Still I felt had she arrested Bothwell and executed him for Darnley's murder, the Scots would've forgave her, yet she was pregnant so... She and Darnley did lay together so she could've posed him as the father. Converting tho would've been the best decision. lol I remember reading when Mary Tudor comes to power in England. Elizabeth pretends to convert to Catholicism, but feigns a headache and illness to not attend Mass. She also spits out the holy sacrament further trying Mary's patience...

It’s crazy that when discussing the Tudors, the vast majority of people often forget about Henry VII, then jump from Henry VIII to either Mary or Elizabeth. Edward is often completely overlooked for the fact that he simply did not live long enough to truly make a mark on English history like his father or sisters did.

@@calliefinck6275 Well this whole affair thing is very unclear, no? I mean, it's known that Catherine Parr sent her away after finding her embracing with Thomas. Of course it could have been a forced embrace too, we will never know. Then we know Kat Ashley said Elizabeth had affection for Thomas (whatever affection means?). So I think we don't know if there were any secret visits she "consented" to (I think a 14-year-old cannot give a valid consent to a grown man, it's just gross) or not. They certainly could have portrayed the whole Thomas thing in a worse light, but I don't think it is 100% sure that the way they portrayed it is inaccurate. It's one of the things we will never know. It's certain that Elizabeth avoided Thomas's advances after she was sent away by Catherine and she also rejected his marriage proposal. But what went on in Catherine Parr's house, I think we will never know for sure. It is certain that Thomas was said to be a very handsome, charming, and convincing man, and 14-year-old girls are very impressionable. But yeah we will never know. To me, in the series he seems a typical predetor who grooms and then abuses his victims. Ep 4 is a proof of it, he is straight up despicable there, to Jane, to Catherine, to everyone. It's just that the Elizabeth actress should be much younger. I mean, imagine the same kissing scenes with a real 14-year-old, for example the girl who played Elizabeth in The Tudors. Thomas kissing that little girl would look utterly disgusting, consent or no consent.

Neverminanything else, as monarch Edward had to get busy creating heirs as soon as he was physicallly able, he did not have the luxury of waiting 8 or 10 years for Mary to grow up, He needed a young lady who was able and ready to carry a pregnancy.

He ruled for 6 years, with a Lord Protector (Edward Seymour) ruling for him as he was underage. But Edward was not completely passive as a child king, he had his own ideas and he was always consulted. He was not always sick. He died young of illness, but he was healthy before that disease, with occasional childhood illnesses. But his death caught most people unprepared as they did not expect him to die so suddenly. That suggests he was not a sickly person who people thought would die.

But then, how should they exactly speak? They can't speak exactly the same way 16th century people spoke English, hardly anyone would understand, let alone enjoy, that in a tv show. So what can these characters say and what can't they say? Can they say "you"? These people in the 16th century most probably said "thou" and "thee" instead of "you". So "you" is okay and the F word is not okay? Where is the limit to modernization?

@@tarawrr20 Yeah but that's it, that he (Edward VI) doesn't have parents, and he is the king at age 9. So in several ways he desperately tries to suddenly seem like an adult, and "talking like them", and shouting with the adult men around him, is one of those things. It's his inner child insecurity, and being uncomfortable in such an adult position as king. At least that's how I see his behavior in the whole series. Not sure that it comes across through these short clips, though.
