Edward I was King of England from for 35 years from 1272 to 1307.
He’s the fifth of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled England between 1154 and 1485. The son of Henry III and the grandson of King John who we covered in previous videos.
He’s best known for bringing the Welsh under English rule and for having Scottish leader William Wallace - the subject of Mel Gibson’s 1995 very very historically accurate film Braveheart - executed and for expelling all Jews from England … an edict that would only be officially overturned under Oliver Cromwell some 350 years later.
Edward was born in 1239. At that point his father Henry III had been King for 23 years - if this seems like a long time, bear in mind Henry had been crowned when he was just nine.
A powerful well built fellow at 6’2” Edward was nicknamed Edward Longshanks (a reference to his long legs).
When he was 15 his father married him off to Eleanor of Castille and he would have 15 children with her, nine of which tragically died in childhood.
His eldest surviving son Edward - who would inherit the crown as Edward II - was the last of his children with Eleanor.
In 1258 his father Henry III was forced to sign the Provisions of Oxford, constitutional reforms designed to limit his powers.
But by the mid 1260s the English barons had got it into their heads that he was about to reclaim these powers - the barons revolted.
Led by the powerful Earl of Leicester Simon de Montford, the rebels declared war on the king.
Prince Edward, by then a powerful warrior, was captured at the Battle of Lewes in 1264.
Incredibly though, the burly prince Edward escaped and killed de Montford at the Battle of Evesham in 1265.
The rebellion over, Edward set off to join the 9th Crusade in 1268 - the latest attempt to capture Jerusalem - leading a military campaign, but almost falling victim to a Syrian assassin.
Finally in 1272, his father King Henry III died and Edward was King.

Although I'm sure this wasn't covered since it wasn't really relevant to the points our host wanted to make in the video, by historical account, Edward had a lovely marriage to Eleanor of Castile (if the 15 kids weren't already an indication), mourning her deeply after her death. There are still some monuments (Eleanor Crosses) standing that he erected.
These are great videos, and short enough to be appreciated at .8x ~ .9x speed, which is about the bitrate my brain can handle if i want to retain anything :) I must be getting old. Again, great vids.

i love these short histories. maybe when you are done with the english rulers you could do the scottish. also, you finally mentioned charles 3.

The Hammer of the Scots was a nick name given to him only after he died which comes from an inscription placed on his tomb in the 16th century which reads: Edwardus Primus Scottorum Malleus hic est, 1308. Pactum Serva. (Here lies Edward I, Hammer of the Scots , 1308. Keep the Faith).

King John didn't die (as the cartoon sign said) in 2016. Queen Elizabeth, and all the other British Monarchs would have had a issue with that.

Yes ... category error on that one. You're not the first to notice :)
You shouldn't joke about "Braveheart" being historically accurate. I'm sure that very few people, especially teenagers and youngsters, have bothered to learn that the movie is laughably IN-accurate.

Back then, they had titles, not numbers. Even then, Edward decided style himself as The First so it stuck.

The Normans started using numbers after the conquest, prior to that kings didn't use them. So calling Edmund and Edmund Ironside "Edmund I" and "Edmund II" or Harold Harefoot and Harold Godwinson "Harold I" and "Harold II" is anachronistic and wrong. If you start counting the pre-Norman conquest Edwards (Edward the Elder, Edward the Martyr and Edward the Confessor) then Edward Longshanks would be Edward IV and the last Edward so far would be Edward XI.

Edward the elder would be considered the actual Edward the first Edward Longshanks would be Edward IV
Just found out he's my 22nd great grandfather, goodness.

Calling it historically accurate was very much tongue in cheek.
“Most [Jews] were expelled by Edward I in 1290. Jews did not return in significant numbers until the late 17th century under Charles II.
