Henry VI was King of England for 39 years from 1422 to 1461 and then again for six months from October 1470 to April 1471.
Although he’s the 11th Plantagenet to have sat on England’s throne, he’s commonly referred to as a Lancastrian King because it was under his reign that the Wars of the Roses broke out between two separate branches of the royal family stretching back to Edward III.
One the one side the House of Lancaster, descended from Edward III’s son John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster.
On the other the House of York, descended from Edward III’s other son Edmund, the Duke of York.
Henry VI is famous for inheriting the crown of England when he was just 9-months-old and for suffering such severe mental health issues as an adult, the Kingdom toppled around him.
He’s also arguably the only one of our Kings who simultaneously ruled England AND France.
He’s a pivotal monarch - starting his reign when he could barely walk, realising the dream of many previous kings by sitting on the French throne, but then losing it all; his life snuffed out with a blow to the head when he was 49.
On top of that, the chaos of Henry VI’s reign would result in an unexpected turn in English history - just 14 years after his death a distant branch of the royal family would sweep to power and come to dominate the history books …. the Tudors.

What an intro for Richard III!
Thanks so much! You saved me for my history project
Thank you for this introduction to Henry VI and the wars of the roses - my favourite period of British history.
Yes!!!!! Thank you! I've been waiting, just got back from London after seeing Henry V's tomb in Westminster Abbey, first thing I did when I was delirious from 8 hour flight there. The energy around it is crazy!
edward IV be vibing at the end fr 💀
These make my day, week and month 🎉 Hoping he does all the kings of every country! France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, or Japan next? China Morocco Saudi Arabia did you know their opening a new Viking Museum in Oslo soon? I didn't get to see Henry VI's tomb yet, but did go to Winchester too. I wrote a book of them, the historians there were impressed. They have Egbert, Cnut, Henry II and Emma's bones, but are doing DNA tests to sort them in the right boxes.
It’s all blood and guts but we finish with dancing 😅

Thank you History Box, very cool!
Thank You Bro For Finally Posting
Brilliant videos, they're always simplified and easy to follow ❤ I'm looking forward to Richard III
Quite the introduction for England's most libelled King
Love your videos!!
The introduction of Richard III was epic! I didn't know he was suspected of having murdered Henry VI too. I have visited the spot in the Tower of London where Henry VI was murdered but I don't remember any mention of Richard on the panels or anywhere else.

It’s actually a rumor; there’s no actual proof of this. However, as Constable of England, he may have overseen the killing, which ultimately would have had to be on Edward IV’s orders-after all, he was the king.
At last 🎉 ❤ Always love seeing a new video. Thanks!

Brilliant, I just love this. The intro for Richard III had me ROTFL, and I love the animated dancing at the end.

ETA Alice of Sherwood did an excellent and funny video on Richard III a couple of weeks ago.
The Yorks also claimed their right to the throne from the female line of descent from Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, 2nd surviving son of Edward lll. Lionel of Antwerp had one child, Phillippa, from whom the Yorks claim descent. They are descended from the second and the fourth surviving sons of Edward lll.
