Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Vril, the Power of the Coming Race

Hello KZreadrs! I hope your day is going well!
Earlier this week we looked at 1820’s Symzonia: Voyage of Discovery, the first hollow earth adventure novel that was (likely) published by the creator of the hollow earth theory, John Symmes, Jr. ( • Adam Seaborn's Symzoni... ) Now let’s turn to 1871’s Vril, The Power of the Coming Race, by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.
While exploring some odd discovery a newly dug section of a mine with his friend, they fall and his friend dies. He flees from a large dinosaur into the helpful embrace of a group of ancient men that look like angel/demons and have artificial wings. These Vril-la are welcoming and let him seek succor with them. They seem to have a nice utopian society, but is all as it seems?
It does have science fiction elements like proto-robots, energized wings, energy weapons, and more. Unlike Symzonia, all new tech is barely described, it’s just a quick shout out.

Thank you for the video review of this book. The book was not liked as a novel. It was liked because it was more like reportage on something real. Recall how big theosophy was at the time. And the popularity of subjects like Shambhala and Aghartha was also big at the time. And E. Bulwer-Lytton being a Rosicrucian people thought he might be revealing some of the secret knowledge of their organization. Although I personally was steeped in sci-fi from near toddler age, I was really drawn to the book for the reasons that people of that time were drawn to it. I am drawn to it for esoteric and occultic reasons. Tibetan lamas are in telepathic contact with peoples of ante-dilluvian origin who live in the inner-earth and they say that from time to time they come to the surface. And yes, the Nazis did send several expeditions to the Himalayas to curry favor with these lamas in hopes that some kind of introduction might be arranged with the magicians of Aghartha and Shambhala and pre-dilluvian types. Yes, the real draw for the book was because people were of the impression that the book was giving reportage on something true, but in the guise of fiction.

This book heavily inspired the lore of Call of Duty: Zombies from World at War - Black Ops II. I strongly recommend reading this book, then listening to some of the songs from the Zombies OST immediately afterward. Specifically, the songs I recommend are: 115, Coming Home, and Archangel. The lyrics fit surprisingly well if you assume they're from Zee's (one of the major characters in the book) perspective.

I enjoyed it. I agree that its weak in terms of narrative storytelling but the only reason I'm aware of this book is, its referenced often as a work people suspect is based on truth. Most people's recollections of first hand events I wouldn't expect to present a polished narrative, so that wasn't my expectation going in. Also with this guy going into so much detail about narratively unimportant things like the language structure also makes sense. Even if the protagonist had no reason to use the language again you would expect that character to recall nuances of its use for years making it an easy subject to fill pages with. He does a good job of making it relatively believable which I think was the goal here. Its debatable if a grand narrative would have done better at that goal.

Theosophists loved this book. Your observations on popularity is so on point, too. I think Vril, the coming race is one of those books whose concepts were more fascinating than the actual novel, itself. The book is now more of a curio amongst sf/fantasy completists, than the general reading public, but its ideas do live on in lost race/world fiction and its echoes in popular culture.

I pretty much agree with your analysis. It's not great, but I still think it's worth reading and experiencing just for the concepts and the surreal nature of it all although it does get borderline silly at times and quite a slog. It certainly could've been more compelling than it is. Bulwer-Lytton also wrote some good ghost/paranormal short stories that are quite enjoyable.

Hello; glad you like my review. It was an interesting story, yeah, but a lot of t can feel a little...sameish. It's harder to write compelling Utopian works as a opposed to Dystopian ones. It's harder to find conflict and pacing issues naturally occur.

Inner earth was probably like what "star wars, super hero, disaster movies" are to us, modern folk. Oooh, you said it.. right as I was typing it..lol.😂 Space travel, galactic travel ..is our hollow earth. Maybe the future folk will either be into water/ocean exploration... or dimensional travel.. Not aliens or vril.. but mermaids and fish men. (Im sure this fad has been before..the water theme) I personally think..it is all metaphors..all of it, for psychology or.. Spirituality.. astrology.. as above so below, as within so without. Seen vs unseen. Its about us.

It's too bad no one seems to put out videos on the Vril worms anymore, very interesting science fiction. What you have is a highly advanced telepathic race of genious creatures. They exist as a worm and they can enter into the left eye of a person. I remember Sadhguru channel said there was some type of spiritual difference between the sides. But anyway, they use the humans as host kindof similar to Stephen King's Dreamcatcher film.
