EDUCE: Imaging the Herculaneum Scrolls

The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius covered the city of Herculaneum in twenty meters of lava, simultaneously destroying the Herculaneum scrolls through carbonization and preserving the scrolls by protecting them from the elements. Unwrapping the scrolls would damage them, but researchers are anxious to read the texts. Researchers from the University of Kentucky collaborated with the Institut de France and SkyScan to digitally unwrap and preserve the scrolls. To learn more about the EDUCE project, go to cs.uky.edu/dri.

What really perplexed me was the copyright 2009 at the very end of the documentary. So with editing and all maybe it was actually filmed in 2008? It makes me wonder what has happened over the last 11 or 12 years since this. The title should include the year this was filmed. This is all very old information. Why only 2 scrolls? I thought there were about 200 of them... but only my amateur view and memory from some other film about these scrolls. I also saw in another documentary that they suspect that the villa library where these were found that there is a second area where more scrolls could be stored and I wonder if they are trying to make a major effort to excavate in that direction. A great deed they are doing for humanity!

Don’t bother watching this, apart from all the downfalls of American documentaries (ridiculous music, drama inserted for no reason, repetition of irrelevant points etc) they don’t even bother scanning a scroll until12 minutes in, they spend more time advertising the machine they use to scan. Watch any other documentary on this subject if you want to learn anything at all.

I would expect handling of these items to require the use of gloves, to prevent acid and skin residue from migrating to them and damaging them further. The resolution of these 3D scans may not be sufficient, but I hope for the best.

Look at the "Reply" from Christy Chapman to my comment just above yours. I just saw a phenomenal presentation by Dr. Seales through one of the links and a lot more to go. It's a very complex and amazing journey and exciting to see at this stage.

That's if the ink is iron based. Turns out most isn't. So its back to the drawing board on that one. The ink is made from carbon black. However there is home. "The noninvasive digital restoration of ancient texts written in carbon black ink and hidden inside artifacts has proven elusive, even with advanced imaging techniques like x-ray-based micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). This paper identifies a crucial mistaken assumption: that micro-CT data fails to capture any information representing the presence of carbon ink. Instead, we show new experiments indicating a subtle but detectable signature from carbon ink in micro-CT. We demonstrate a new computational approach that captures, enhances, and makes visible the characteristic signature created by carbon ink in micro-CT. This previously “unseen” evidence of carbon inks, which can now successfully be made visible, is a discovery that can lead directly to the noninvasive digital recovery of the lost texts of Herculaneum." If you want to google it.

We always hope to unearth new knowledge or forgotten knowledge, but given the fact that it is from the home of the wealthy in the empire years after Tiberius, Caligula, Nero, and the year of the four emperors...it is probably a first century version of James Patterson paperbacks which we already have seen or read.

Without fail, every video with someone handling old documents has this same comment, usually upvoted to the top. Gloves are never used when handling things like this. Wearing gloves makes your hands less sensitive and makes you more likely to clumsily damage the document. You're a special kind of stupid, mate LOL. I identify myself as a Catholic, because Catholicism shaped almost 2.000 years of history, arts, culture, traditions of my country... yet I have no imaginary friends in the sky. I take Christian values as a spiritual guide to be a better man. I'm from Rome, born and bred as a Catholic, and I will die as a Catholic, no doubt about it. It's a question of blood, soil and roots. But maybe you have nothing like that, that's why you write that kind of bulls**t.

The texts thus far salvaged, Nick, are from Epicurian philosophers who were not into "fairy tales and mythological notions regarding religion." Superstition and divinity was out, as was fear of death, notions of an afterlife. Instead, focus on living morally and ethically in this world. The closest comparison to a religion I suppose would be Buddhism. Thus I think we'd both agree that saving these documents is pretty important.
