I'm a 57-year-old African American male who is considering going back to school to become a teacher. Listening to this conversation has helped me decide that, yes, this is the direction in which to go. I have always believed that education is the key to freedom, even though I grew up in a household where freedom could only be imagined as a religious afterlife experience. All of my life, I have craved education. I especially enjoyed the discussion of spirit murdering in our children, especially within our communities of color, because so often, this is where it begins at the hands of unconscious hurting parents, who are doing the best they can but are also harming their children. Our children enter the world of schooling already traumatized and harmed only to experience greater harm at the hands of contemptuous teachers. I thought more could be said about the negative impact of hip-hop music, but I appreciated Dr. Love's suggestions on how it can be used to teach at the elementary school level. So many great book recommendations for my future students.

I quit my teaching program because I felt so unprepared to go in the classroom, knew that I had so much unlearning to do first as a human living in this world. Dr. Love is right! Teaching programs are failing teachers and students :/ It's sad to say but it's true. And it's so true what she says about "creating our own". Yes! we can't wait around for these old systems to change. We have to create our own teachers who speak two languages
