Many thanks AlterRockerosis. Don't know who filmed this or when ... just glad they did it and kept the camera rolling. It looks early in the history of this song and the crowd seem not to know the significance of what they are hearing ... but that might just be my ignorance.

This is probably at the Dragonfly in LA around 1995. Anne Preven, the singer, wrote it (she wrote for Madonna before starting the band), and it covered by a cheesy pop artist 5-6 year later. They would also do a banger version of “Torn” live in concert in the vein their best song, “Glow”.

1995 I'm guessing, it looks early in their career and Carla is still the drummer. She left in 1997. I followed these guys around in 95/96, one of my favorite bands. I was HORRIFIED when I heard that saccharine piece of garbage cover on the radio.

They wrote a very good song, and I like their version of it, but not more than the famous cover version. The way Ednaswap did it was probably more expressive of the lyrics, which is generally a good thing, but sometimes what makes a pop song is a tension between the words and the sound.

The original album version is the one, but the industry being what it is, Ednaswap struggled to get recognised. Phil took it to Natalie and then the rest was history.

I was HORRIFIED when I heard that saccharine piece of garbage cover on the radio and realized some poser was making bank off Annie and Scott's song. And in an interview with Natalie in 1997 she was asked how she wrote the song and she dodged the question in a way that made it sound like she wrote it, and never gave Edna Swap credit or corrected the interviewer.

@cjborcuk I think I about covered the reasons in the comment. If you're doing a cover, give credit to the original artist. Don't act like it's your song. Basic decency. TBH, I overstated my reaction at first hearing it, I was disappointed that the cover has none of the oomph and emotion of the original, but I wasn't mad yet. I was angry and disgusted at the non-acknowledgment and everyone's assumption that she wrote this awesome song.

Agree there should’ve been far more transparency about the origin of the material. But the hate in the comments for NI is so wide of the mark. Yes, the original is majestic and the emotion is there for all to see. But Natalie took it, polished it and breathed totally fresh life into it and truly made it a classic. It’s an absolutely amazing pop song under Natalie and she deserves huge credit for that.

ngl Torn kinda sucks slowed down... it was meant to be in 4/4 96bpm like the remix as well as Natalie's and most other covers.
