Piaf was the main attraction at a gala in Monte Carlo in 1955. I was 13 and attended with my parents. This tiny woman dressed all in black walked onto the stage and without a second’s pause started to sing this song plus several more. I shall never forget the total silence of the audience which was surprising because we were all having dinner. Quite a special memory for a young girl.

J'admire les vrais bons chanteurs, et en grande partie ceux qui ont brisé le moule pour toujours ; comme Edith Piaf, la voix nationale de la France. Le petit moineau de Paris est né pour chanter, et elle le fait suprêmement. Edith chantait avec chaque molécule de son corps et avec toutes les sensations que lui permettait son âme. Honnêtement, et je demande pardon à d'autres grandes chanteuses mondiales telles que Mina Mazzini, Mireille Mathieu, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey et Patti LaBelle, entre autres, que je considère comme les meilleures voix du monde. Mais personne n’a encore chanté de manière aussi organique, aussi claire et musicalement pure qu’Edith Piaf. Personne n’a encore marché dans ces chaussures. Sa puissance musicale et sa sonorité hypnotisante font de Madame Edith Piaf la meilleure chanteuse absolument mondiale de tous les temps... Jesus Bello

Edith Piaf was a magical performer. She sang of love and life with such feeling. She was an artiste in the highest class. For my choice she is one of the greatest singers of all time. What an amazing woman she was.

My father died three years ago on 19th December, watching and listening to Edith singing this brings so many happy memories. He used to call her "The wee Sparra [Scots]" The little Sparrow, when she was on the radio, which was a lot more frequently when I was young in the 60's. He told me about her and how she was such a heroine to the French people. Right now, I miss him so very much. This song makes me think of him and remember the great and happy times. Such a lovely voice and a brave and wonderful woman. This song will be forever with me.

She was named Pilaf by her 1st promoter. He said she was a piaf, meaning a little sparrow.

Quelle voix magnifique ! quand on sait qu'elle est partie de très bas et qu'elle a réussi à conquerir l'Amérique : un superbe parcours. Je n'avais que 4 ans et demi lorsqu'elle est décédée, mais quand j'ai découvert ses chansons, j'ai été bouleversé par cette voix si belle. Encore maintenant lorsque je les réécoute, elles produisent toujours le même effet sur moi. Comme j'aurais aimé aller l'entendre et la voir sur scène et même, si possible la rencontrer. Une immense artiste disparue beaucoup trop tôt !

I have loved this woman since 1975 when I was 14 and first saw her. Went to visit her grave in France 2021. Still love her.

We'll never see a talent like her again. She was one of a kind. Thank God, we had her in our lives to enjoy and revere.....

Historical note : when the uprising of the French Foreign Legion in Algeria following her declaration of independence by de Gaulle, the soldiers of the 1st BEP (Bataillon étranger de parachutistes - Bataillon of Foreign Paratroopers) left their camp of Zeralda after the failure of the uprising against the government of part of its Armed Forces, they sung that song.
