That was an excellent thorough yet concise guide! I have edited drums plenty in the past, but I did it by eye and ear. I have never used the transients or quantize and didn’t know I could fill the gaps and cross fade all those regions in one big batch. I’m pretty sure this is a game changer for me. I do have a question. What if I have multiple drum takes? Do I have to merge the regions before starting this process? It doesn’t seem like you can fill gaps or cross fade with a track with multiple takes.

I’ve been mixing my bands songs, and we’re now using real drums for the first time. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!

Loving the Logic videos you’ve been making lately! Your GarageBand videos were a god-send when I was getting started. Anyone (that has a Mac) that asks me where to begin, I always suggest they start out with GarageBand and watch your videos. I upgraded to Logic about six months ago and while there’s lots of great content creators that cover Logic, I feel your approach is still much needed in the space! Something about the way you explain things, staying focused on the meat and potatoes and not bogging us down with all the little nuances, it always keeps me engaged and makes the process much less daunting. I feel like I can just jump in and get stuff done. So cheers and thanks for another great video!

Great edit technique. I'm using it together with the "Nudge" function in the Toolbar. I assume at the end of the process you merge the split-up audio regions into one for the sake of memory efficiency and overall convenience, right? Cheers

im thinking about swithcing from ableton to logic because of this feature. Its not time consuming at all. Time consuming is having to slice and drag every beat by hand like i do and it takes hours! thanks

Has anyone had issues where the grouped tracks don't respect the Q-reference enabled? For example, sometimes I set the Snare top only to be q referenced and for some reason other region transients are still used to slice the group. Q reference is disabled on the other tracks.

Awesome video but i'm having trouble, every time i select the track i want to edit it shows up in the track portion of the edit window but a completely different audio region shows up in the file window, have you ever had problems with this?

This video just gave me what I needed after watching practically everything on KZread about this topic. Thanks man really thanks! Ive been practicing with it this weekend and it works like a charm even in busiest drum parts. My only question is when it comes to ghost notes.. Do you suggest to lock them on the grid? Will it be recommended to mark them to on the snare track section? Or let them be?

Awesome, Raphiel! I'm glad it was helpful. Great question- depends on the song/performance but I would say I generally don't lock them in. Instead, I make sure they are kept in relation to the main snare hit. Aka, I'll drag back from the snare hit that was perfectly quantized to capture the ghost note(s) before it. But it really depends on how tight the drummer/performance is. Also- if the ghost notes are really a key part of the rhythm and should be perfectly on a specific beat- that will push me toward quantizing it. Hope that helps!

Hey, doing this method.. do you feel a degradation of the audio? or phase issues?

I just got this and hoping to edit the snare only to change the sounds.

Do you have to slice all of it and do this for each section? Or can you just high light the whole thing and press Q?

You must be playing those at a studio! No way you are doing those at home with a young one! I recently started working with a drummer who plays an e-kit and love it. Gives you the feel of a real drummer, more energy, better fills and dynamics but the convenience and flexibility of midi and samples. You should get one!

Every time I click the green Q box on any track to remove it from consideration I get the spinning beach ball of death.

Damn… tell your drummers to get ready for recording. Or get a drum machine.
