its funny how much this guy makes sense while still being completely unrelatable at the same time, i think everyone was trying to make an escape who got into this stuff (i thought i was making an escape just like bukowski was, albeit an extremely slow and painful one lol)

I was deep into the CB’s NYHC music scene, back in the early 80’s all the way through to the 90’s, when the whole thing began to disintegrate. What started as an independent, hard driving alternative music scene, rapidly homogenized & militarized into a strictly conformist scene defined by adherence to dress codes of doc Martens, rolled up jeans, red braces, white t-shirt and nylon bomber jacket. You got stared at real hard if you had the nerve to stray from the uniform on a Sunday matinee. The wildly disparate & adventurous music being performed solidified stylistically as well, and many of the straight edge bands, having locked down the musical formula, spent more & more of their stage time preaching and granted, some of what was said was deep & profound, but most was just arrogant bullshit.

@TidesAreHigh ...absolutely not true....although I do like old Youth of Today stuff, I'm not sure how or why you think anybody owes anything to YoT? Hardcore was good before them and after them.....I actually like Ray a lot. Back in 1991, i and a friend interviewed him in Denver, Co....he invited us to a Krishna temple and we had an amazing vegetarian meal, the guy was cool all the way around...but I don't think hardcore fans owe Ray anything, and I bet he'd agree.

Aside from any thoughts on religion/drugs - bottomline is YOT put out some intense music. My old band (1994) from CT: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oniBuLGeoJfXiNo.html

Once again, I challenge you to tell the difference between this and Straight Youth. I can only imagine how confused the LES street kids huffing glue outside Agnostic Front shows were when YOT started playing CBGBs and they heard lines like “Physically strong / Morally straight / Positive youth / We’re the youth of today!” I want to interview Ray and ask him, “So how is it going as far as kicking down the barriers of hate and fuckin’ prejudice??” -wwwDOTstuffyouwillhateDOTcom/

so much judgement being thrown in every direction here. Sad that they don't put his full interview up on here. Where people could here him saying who really gives a fuck, its their opinion, tehir choice, where he openly states that those who judge and what the edge scene has become is a joke. In some ways you cant help but agree with him. it just shows, you cant judge until you hear the full story. and why watch a video just to condemn and spread hate. we get enough of that on the evening news.

@anormalnick ok one: acdc is crappy music two: respect for music is obviously an important thing, but ur dissing someone elses lifestyle cuz they dont like acdc... respect for music isnt the issue here

Straight edge was an over reaction to punk which was an anarchic rejection of commodity culture / capitalism. An often “holier than thou” attitude pervaded straight edge, mixed with toxic masculinity made it kind of wack. I’m sure it helped a lot of people, and I myself enjoyed a lot of the music - just saying.

I used to really like NYHC in the late 80s, when it largely centered around straight edge. But looking at this clip, it makes me cringe. For one, Jimmy Page had more musical talent in one of his farts than the entire output of Youth of Today. But more importantly, I realize now how utterly conformist and rigid the thinking was in this scene. Like another commenter here observed, if you're cool about your personal choice not to use drugs, then you would have a relaxed attitude about it. Live and let live. It seems, in retrospect, that Ray was just a conservative suburbanite.

I am same age as him and lived 1 hour outside of NYC as well. I never got past the lack of musicality, so thought it was more an act, just like most grunge bands. Same kids are driving Audis in CT today so in fact for the most part it was.
