How I quickly and cheaply edge smooth rough particle board for shelves etc. Just plaster of Paris, acrylic paint and a bit of water to make a doughy micx that can be smeared into the edges.

Great idea - I want to seal the edges of some particle board (high density) treads that were used under carpet on stairs down to my basement. I ripped carpet off - was hoping to find some sort of wood. So, I want to just make these smooth on the ends (the tops are smooth and the risers are made out of wood) - and prime/paint/seal them. I was just going to use some joint compound - and then primer - but this makes more sense to me. Thanks for the tip!
