No one is out there saying "You should like Edge of Tomorrow." Actually, most movie-watchers don't know about this film. It's more often than not overlooked. And yet most audiences that see this movie enjoy it. You might be one of the select few that have seen this movie and also dislike it.

Two great things about this movie: Big action hero Tom Cruise was happy to play an abject coward in the early parts of this movie. Not something we've seen before. Most Master Sergeant type characters in military movies are played from an emotional base of anger and hostility. Bill Paxton plays Farrell here from a base of pure joy and it is glorious to see.

This is such an underrated sci-fi gem. I love it! Cage goes from a complete noob to a hardened war veteran but still manages to have a heart at the end of the story. The concept, the production design, the varying tones is all so well done. If you enjoyed this one, another Tome Cruise sci-fi movie that came out right around the same time was Oblivion. I think you would really enjoy that one. It also has an unexpectedly happy ending.

Emily Blunt was three months pregnant in this movie. She was chosen for the part and did not find out until filming was due to start. She told only Tom Cruise, as she was worried about being replaced, he told no one else, and he just made sure that Emily was never in any danger of being injured. So she kept the part, and he made sure anything possibly too dangerous was safe for her. She revealed it publicly much later. Tom may be a bit nutty, but no one should ever doubt his dedication to film and the people he works with. You work hard, he works harder and respects you for it.

As near as I've ever been able to find, nobody is too sure of how many times Cage died before they finally killed the Omega, but most people put it in the area of around a year's worth of deaths, partly because Rita said she had the power for 300 days, and partly because Cage is nowhere near the soldier she is when he starts dying. So probably a couple of weeks before he figures out a way to get away from J Squad and find her, then maybe a week-ish of trying to actually get to her and talk to her, then all the dying during training, dying on the beach...I'm surprised he was still sane by the end!

So, Emilie Blunt was talking about filming this in one of her many interviews for the movie and she was talking about how those metal exoskeleton armor suits weight like 70 pounds. And at one point it was too much for her and she broke down in front of Tom and started "whining" and complaining that it was too much and she couldn't do it. She was nearly in tears with how hard it was to do. Tom, she says, just stood there for a few seconds looking at her, then finally said to her "stop being a f****en pussy". And it was so unexpected that she just burst out laughing, but it also gave her the push she needed, and she then went on to continue filming!

It is always interesting to me how many things that MSG Farell says turn out to be applicable to Gage. Great heroes are forged in the crucible of fire... check. You will be baptized in battle... check... and you will be reborn tomorrow. Check! Also, his notion that gambling entertains the notion that our fate is in the hands of someone else... in this case, since Gage is the one that is being reborn, he gets an opportunity to make sure he gets a fate that is favorable... through readiness and discipline, in fact. Gage, indeed, becomes the master of his own fate at the end, when he finally wakes up in the helicopter! Great reactions, and commentary!

@markg1727. This movie is an adaptation of the novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. I recommend that as a good read.

Went to the premiere of this movie in 2013 in London around 8 AM and Paris around 2 PM on the same day, it was a race against the time like the movie! Saw Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in both cities and took pictures. They flew thereafter to New York for the third premiere that day! (2023.08.17)

My personal favorite when it comes to the time loop cliche. The name Operation: Downfall comes from a proposed WWII plan for the Allied invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. It was not used because of the use of the atomic bombs and Japan's surrender.

I don't want to spoil it for you so I won't tell you anything else about it. I just hope you'll consider watching it for Halloween or anytime.
