Question: (asking for a buddy) He bought a 600 CFM Edelbrock #1406 and needs a #1403, 500 CFM but he doesn't want to buy new carburetor? His newly built 9.5 to 1 compression, mild cam, 302 motor is running really rich (like crap) now. He has a manual 4 speed tranny street driver 65 mustang. The stock EDL 600 CFM primary Jets are .098" and the secondary are .095". Rec gas is always used and the fuel pump is mechanical. According to Edelbrock, every .001" of jet size change, equals 3-1/2 % fuel air change. I was going to recommend that he drops the jets 2 sizes (.006" total or 17.5%) on both primary and secondary to .092" & .089". Yes that's a big change but it needs a big change. When I drove the car it was loading up and backfiring in the muffler at 0-60 mph while accelerating and cruising. It's so rich at idle it chokes you and the idle Jet screws don't do much. I calculated 302 x 6,000 x .85 divided by 3456 = 445 CFM carb needed. 500 CFM is the closest . Other than buying a new carburetor, what do you think he can do now? In the future I'm trying to get him to a local speed shop and put it on a local Mustang chassis dyno to read fuel air mixture curve. Thanks for any experienced replies. 2003

I have a 4 speed '69 roadrunner w/stock 383 (bored 30 thousandths with oversized rings and hardened valve seats). I have had it 38 years. I installed a 650 thunder series (1806). An old motor head tuned the carb drawing manifold vacuum, not ported. Played around with sluggish acceleration for years (don't drive it much) and this year had fuel pump failure. When I replaced it it ran better than ever. I would like to retune the carb now that it has correct fuel flow. Instead of reinventing the wheel, and as a general rule, what is the best set up for this car (metering rods, jets and springs)? Should I go back to the factory set up and start there? Timing is about 12 degrees at idle and I run Pertonix electronic ignition. Thanks and great videos!

Ok, I purchased the AVS2 800cfm carb with the help of Edelbrock for my engine. Now I have a new electric fuel pump and filters and I cannot seem to keep the car at idle it wants to turn off. I see that the 2 round bowls in the front of the carb only the left side is squirting fuel at idle before shutting off. Any suggestions with this would greatly help.

I bought the 650cfm for my 68 ford galaxie with a 390 fe 2v , I put a big street high performance cam and 4v intake manifold. My vacuum is 6-10 hg at idle so I put the lowest spring in the metering rod assembly and no more flooding but my choke don't work, I wired it up and it's still not working! It gets warm so the heat element is doing its job but I never see the choke flap open or close it just stays almost closed til I open the throttle and it opens with it, is that how it's supposed to work?

Rebuild could solve this issue. Could be a plugged jet or something simple.

Lets pretend I've never touched a carburetor. Give me a video for dummies. I bought a gmc c3500 dually 454ci Automatic 2wd. It has an edlebrock 1407 Also has edlebrock intake manifold The jets are shooting fuel out when I press the gas. The truck has spark but it still won't start. I currently only have the engines mechanical fuel pump hooked up running to a can of fuel(no electric fuel pump) do I need the electric in tank pump for the psi? Or? Any other solutions to get it to fire over during testing.

+blue970 Rodriguez idk what part number edelbrock has for a 500cfm. if you watch this entire video, he says what cfm in general goes to which engine sizes. stock to mild engine smaller than a 350, run a 500cfm. 350-454 cubes, run a 600cfm. I know Edelbrock carbs have the part number stamped on the low front right corner near that mounting bolt. This video series will show exactly where to find your part number. I know a 1405 is performer series 600cfm manual choke. 1406 is performer series 600cfm electric choke. Both are 4bbl You said you have a 1405 e. IDK what that is. As far as a 2bbl goes, the only ones that I know anything about are the Rochester 2G. Those are a 250cfm 2bbl. ~I only know that because the yellow deuce coupe from the film American Graffiti runs 4 of them on an early Man-A-Fre intake atop a 1957 Bel-Air 283 block. Casting numbers dated May 18th 1957. But I digress. Getting back to your car, I recommend that you go to summitracing.com Find their technical support page and you can e-mail them your questions. Be sure that you provide them with every detail about the car and the engine. If you can remove one of your valve covers, the cylinder heads have a casting number. If you can give them that number, along with every other detail you know about the running gear, their experts can tell you exactly which carburetor to run. Better yet, I recommend you track down a GOOD mechanic and have him rebuild, tune, and install you a good Rochester Quadrajet. Don't listen to anybody who says Quadrajets are bad. If you know what you're doing, a Quadrajet runs fantastic and is known for the best fuel economy. Personally, on a stock-to-mild Chevy engine, the first thing that I would do is seek out expert advice on what specific casting number to look for on a Quadrajet, and how to rebuild it and install the correct Jets for the application. Be warned however, that a Quadrajet is one of the most complicated carburetors that you can get. They can be very finnicky if you don't know what you are doing. I personally have never been inside of any carburetor, and I would not attempt to work on any of them without consulting with an expert. I hope I have helped you in some way or another. Like I said, find the technical support at SummitRacing.com and ask them what carburetor they recommend. That's your best bet. Or a Quadrajet. Please comment back and let me know what you decide to run.

Hi, Edelbrock! Great video series! Very informative, learned a lot. I wish I had known about these videos when I owned my old Chevy 4x4... Questions: Are all of your carburetors essentially the same basic design as in the installation and tuning and everything else in this series would be identical? Also, can you please make a video showing how to perform a complete rebuild and overhaul? I have a hunch that numerous people would love to have that information. Thanks for making fantastic products!

Okay, it's been a long time since I've played around with carbs, and some of this stuff has gotten fuzzy in my memory. The above video mentions that I would need an adapter plate to use this carb on GM car originally using a Rochester Quadrajet, but will this carb fit onto a 1970 460 in place of a Motorcraft 4300 carb? I believe that carb I have now is rated at 650 CFM, so will I run into too many problems if I downgrade to 600 CFM?
