Eddie Trunk interviews Philip Anselmo DECEMBER 15, 2016

** FAST FORWARD to 19:51 if you want to get to the DIMEBASH incident, first few minutes are silent, Interview starts @ 4:55 **
Back in January, controversial footage surfaced of Phil Anselmo at a tribute show for late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, giving a Nazi salute and shouting "White Power." Initially, Anselmo said he was joking and wouldn't be apologizing which lead to some serious heat from people in the metal community.
Anselmo was famously called out by Machine Head's Robb Flynn, with Flynn calling Anselmo a racist. Eventually, Anselmo offered apology after apology before taking a break from the public eye for the better part of the year.
He broke his silence on the matter speaking to Decibel Magazine back in October. At the time, Anselmo said he would likely never discuss the subject again and would limit the amount of interviews he gave. However when Anselmo appeared on today's episode of Eddie Trunk's SiriusXM Volume show Trunk Nation, and Trunk brought up the Dimebash incident to give Phil forum to explain himself, the Pantera frontman couldn't help but address the issue. The part about Dimebash starts about 21 minutes in:

Josh Yettou you don't think Dime was racist?! lol that whole Confederate flag guitar thing was a passing phase? who gives a fuck!? metal used to mean fuck what ever you wanted to say fuck off to. it's a shame. maybe Phil hates a group of people based on race or culture or musical styles. who knows? clearly he has African Americans and other ethnicities around him as I have personally witnessed throughout my 25 plus years around these guys. maybe it's an issue of a particular culture and not an entire race.... maybe not! I have personally seen him interact very kindly with"black friends" of mine in the 90s. could it be possible that this was a reaction to today's stifling atmosphere so many proponents of free speech have created recently? I don't know... nor does anyone else except Phil! further, who fucking cares! I cannot think of a time when Sharpton had pissed me off enough to hate him over racist bull shit he's espoused. people react to things, get angry, bring attention.... no one said you are a dick bag because you dislike racists. who's to say he's a bad person because he MIGHT dislike one sect of a group more than others? clearly, as stated above, this isn't a problem with EVERY black person on the planet, or every ANYTHING. personal choice is vastly less valued than when I was a youth. what a fucking shame! but ultimately the bigger, more important point is who fucking cares?!! it's his choice. it says zero about how I FEEL about his musical delivery. I appreciate frank honesty for a change in this insidiously dishonest environment of today's muted and gagged freedoms. METAL POWER!

It feels like you know that Phil is a good man who just can't help but get himself into trouble by not having a filter and not being able to ignore the haters. He's more vulnerable than he lets on. Especially as he's kicked the booze and drugs, he just seems to have love for people and wants to spread his wealth of experience and success to others.

@Jamie DeLorenzo he apologized but didn't prostrate himself before his detractors or allow himself to be humiliated going overboard kissing the media bosses' asses. He never really backed down and also technically the arm gesture harkens back to the glory if Rome... It was the salute of the Roman legions long before Nazi Germany adopted it to symbolize continuity between the greatness if Rome and 20th century Berlin. People have been brainwashed to accept a very narrow interpretation of the salute, one that ignores the true history and meaning behind. The whole incident was ultimately a stupid druken blunder in Phil's part... But excessive apologizing would only serve to harm his brand and persona that much more.

He's been accused of this stuff ever since he shaved his head during vulgar. It was the image alone that people were basing it on. Never mind that song lyrics on Vulgar... No Good (Attack the Radical) seem to express frustration with bad US race relations. He looked like a skin head so they decided he was. 'That guy' has been heckling Phil at live shows over that, his heroine addiction and anything else they could use to get a rise on stage. Most Pantera fans I've known weren't trolls but the band definitely attracted them. Phil, not being a student of new age political correctness, probably snapped back at them and took the bait on camera. I don't know Phil personally but there's a difference between hate and bad taste. I don't see any evidence of the former. Given all the baseless crap he got because of his shaved head, the anti-racist lyrics on his most critically acclaimed album (not to mention thematically daring lyrics from a white dude... They could have avoided the topic altogether like most commercially successful rock bands with a PR agent rather than giving attention to the discussion.) and given that he'd have everything to lose, nothing to gain, and a lot of metal guys just enjoy deviant sarcasm as extreme as their tastes in music, because breaking sacred social protocol can be funny...i just don't see this as anything to get upset about. Even if he is secretly a racist despite his songs, he's somewhat famous but not enough to rally an army of angry white metal fans into a race war. Who really cares if a 90s metal singer makes tasteless jokes at a grimy club that probably smelled like malt liquor and ass. Middle aged suburban voters aren't basing their opinions on the cowriter of Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills. Let it go.

Which considering where he grew up, would be completely understandable. I know nowadays it's trendy to grasp at straws for a reason to call someone a racist. I try to not follow that trend. If my instincts are right and those feelings are there, he clearly tries to reject them. So IMO he's not a bad person from what I can see. Phil has a wide taste in music, indubitably, he is " a real diamond in the rough". For all those who just look at his image and face and voice, that can be easily labeled as a rude man, always drunk, brain smashed from years of drug abuse and so on, in his speech at 8:25 he mentioned about Chelsea Wolfe (I could not believe that): Wolfe keep a natural legacy with The Cure, Joy Division, The Smiths sound's profile. Therefore, being a in fan of them, I always felt like an outsider once i started appreciating Pantera...today I just learn something beautiful about Phil Anselmo and my self as well, there are no boundaries in taste, there are no boundaries in feelings, listen to whatever genre helps you feel alive and use these emotions to build something great within yourself.

Well yeah if you go around concerts yelling WHITE PRIIDE while dojng a nazi salute on stage while pissed drunk, people miiiight assume you're racist lmao The funny part is there's plenty of recordings of Phil going on weird racial rants during pantera days (which dime and vinnie talked about actually, especially vinnie hated that shit and how you never knew what he would say but would be blamed for it in press anyway), but I still dont think he's racist lol he's just confused, he just doesn't seem like it. Idk it's hard to explain. This is why I think people who claim drunkenness gets the realness out of people... nah, it gets rhe dumbness out of them. On the other hand, if you think people calling him racist for yelling white power and nazi salutes as "SJW bullshit" I wouldn't be surprised if Phil himself would try to slap you up for that himself LMAO

Love Phil, he's always seems so genuine & hope to meet him in person one day on a gig. Have loved Pantera since i was a teenager & not for 1 second i thought it was a racist band. I suggest that people do more research before making such awful claims. Such claims not only hurt the man himself ,but most importantly the fans and all those kids that start up with metal nowdays. It did feel rotten when i heard about these claims; it's like someone is crushing your worldview. Be more loving everyone & take care of yourselves.

I love interviews with Phil! I remember him years ago calling Metallica false Metal years ago. He's always got something interesting to say. We didn't have bitter resentment towards any race back then. Of course we didn't understand very well what others went through. I was never taught or even felt any hate toward anyone. It's the idea that I was born "white" and am told that I am "naturally racist" that makes me feel that I'm unfairly misrepresented. Without ever getting to know me or understand what I'm about? You are entitled to think what you want but not to unjustly label me for the sake of incriminating me for things I have never had anything to do with.

I hope I won't recieve hate for having this opinion (2, 3, 4). This opinion won't change, just as my love for Phil won't change.
