From experience Phil is genuine as it comes. He was great, my friend was kind of disappointed cause he thought Phil was a big scary dude haha. Phil likes to put it on for the audience but he was one of the friendliest musicians I've met, if not the friendliest (him or Randy Blythe)

Pantera was a sounding, screaming, head smashing, battle cry for myself to express every bit of raw , pure, feeling, pure emotion, that a young man would be capable of surviving. you saved me from my life of hell. You were my voice. "the voice" that I didn't know I had within. If I never found Pantera? I might have never been able to express or even understand the emotional energy and turmoil within. It would have ended me. Music is powerful. Be blessed, stay humble, cause we are all broken brother. That is our bond in this world.

Phil's very articulate. What a deep person.

I just love this guy! I could listen to that voice for days on end. And i really, really like that he doesn't just answer a question, but that he thinks (about it) before he speaks.

Phil will always and forever be one of my ALL TIME favorite metal vocalists.

Cool dude, met him twice in one night back in 2019 after a concert. He was very friendly not intimidating as I expected being face to face with Phil Anselmo. He's a living legend. Vinnie was good to meet too. RIP Dime and Vinnie Paul.

@@soundgarden6478 I’ve never really been star-struck, but I was pretty damn close. I remember telling him that he was the reason I got into and stayed interested in metal; he said, super serious, “Smart man.” But it looked like he was holding back a chuckle. Another time, he told me something like, “I’ve watched some of you guys grow up” (going to so many shows over the years). Whether he recognized me or not, that’s a really cool perspective.

I've seen Mr Anselmo perform at his absolute best (92) & his absolute worst (last Pantera shows in UK) not sure exactly what year, then I seen him again years later perform with Down, & more recently with the Illegals, clean, healthy & back to his best, the man has been to hell & back, a true hero & an inspiration, a living legend 🙏🏻

I swear Phil needs to do an autobiography or a several hour interview of his life at some point!

This interview shows a man who was out of control but has sense been brought to terms with reality and now has remorse for the past. Tragedy does happen and it makes things tougher and his actions from the past has to weigh a lot heavier on him because of that unfortunate tragedy, but he's right.....you have to move on and embrace the joy that embodied all those years and be grateful for what you still have. The direction he was going could have lead him to be the first member we lost. Life is unpredictable. I'm just grateful for all the amazing music the band shared with us over the years. Pantera will always be one of the greatest bands in history!

This interview is 11 year's old now.

In 1992 when Vulgar Display came out i was 6 years old. My best friend had an 18 year old brother that came in, put that album on as loud as it would go and threw us all over the living room. From that point on i was a die hard Pantera fan. The energy, aggression, and intensity grabbed ahold of me and i was hooked. When i was 13 that that guy took us to a Pantera concert on the reinventing the steel tour i think and it was maybe the most memorable experience of my life to that point. It was the first concert i ever went to. Oxycontin killed that dude several years ago and every time i hear Pantera it feels like im back in his living room when i was 6. Everyone has a pantera story and thats why those guys are legends.

Man, looking into those eyes when he's talking about his Pantera brothers and seeing how there was such a sensitive hole of memories inside him, I have so much sympathy for him. They had such a positive impact on so many people. It's a shame he and Vinnie were never able to fully reconcile; I know myself and millions of others would have been there to help mediate. Phil, I hope these gigs with Rex, Zakk, and Charlie are helping all of you cherish Vinnie and Dime's legacy in a new, special way...and I hope it's helping you liberate whatever burden you're carrying on those shoulders , dude!

That can't be more true what Phil said about the back pain. I've struggled with back pain in my mid 20's and I'm 50 years old now, blown out disks ect.. I had some endoscopic survey back in 2007 which saved my life as I was going down before that surgery. The recovery took many many months, and you never get back to the same person, so you change your lifestyle compensate for it.

He is definitely down to earth, open about his ups and downs to anyone and any age who asks him anything. Phil is one of many or few who inspire in a good way. THE MAN!

Most candid interview of Phil ever, really makes you see things in a new perspective...awesome.

I use to see Phil at the House of Shock in New Orleans during Halloween. I remember one year a friend of mine was with me and Phil was standing by a group of people talking and I say to my friend that's Phil the lead singer of Pantera. He was like no way so he walks over to em and was like are you the lead singer from Pantera? I remember Phil just looking down at him for a few seconds with a dude are you fucking serious face on him and in that deep voice he goes "you know who the fuck I am"

Incredible insight into suffering when nobody else understands. He really touches on a few things people are never comfortable talking about.

I'm fairly sure he knows the reason why Vinnie didn't talk to him towards the end , last few years , was the thought of it hurt too bad, I think Vinnie let go of the bad feelings towards Phil years before he died. I know they would converse indirectly for the business dealings and album reissues. Plus I saw an interview with Vinnie were he agreed on Phil's thoughts on Rex's book. Plus Rex and Phil said there was at least one time where Vinnie was alive they almost did a reunion. Again I'm sure the thought of it was just too hard to bear.

Phil seems like a great person who went through a painful chapter in his life. He is sober and of sound mind now. I pray he continues to be in peace. Saw them in 97 or 98 at the forum in Inglewood. I was walking in while they were playing and their POWER, their sheer energy, blew my fan mind away! I will never forget the sheer power they were eminating, seen many live bands, all genres, none had the YOU WILL LISTEN TO US, power they had.

Phil is a living legend. Such honesty!..thanks for all the stories man.. ♥

My L5-S1 is fucked. Disc presses on spinal cord. Can feel it in my feet. Can’t sit up in the morning. Bone spurs in C6-C7-C8 will freeze my neck up some days. And the rest…yeah… “The shaving down (shaving down) of milligrams with a gun in your hand.” - Down, the Tides, sums that up pretty solid. All out fucking war, bro. Physical Therapy is humbling but I’m not going under the knife. That “mental callus” part is so true. There are mornings I literally grunt and shout and shoulder check a doorframe to get my adrenaline going to overcome that first miserable hour. Hold on.

I agree with Phil as well, I've had a laminectomy 2 years ago and now have 3 herniated protruding disc's, spinal stenosis and arthritis in my lower back all at 37 yrs old. It is horrible living with this pain and people just don't understand unless they are experiencing it as well. Plus I'm a recovering heroin addict and it's very hard to not wanna use that to medicate and try to be positive and move forward. Thank God for physical therapy! I refuse to let this beat me down, great interview with Phil

Phillip H Anselmo - this guy is an absolute legend, this was a great interview. Phil is clearly very complex person, he’s been through the worst and the best and come out of the other side. True legend and completely underrated vocalist. His vocal range was incredible. If you listen to some of the early stuff he has great authority, vibrato and intonation.

A legend that has influenced many generations.

Sobriety will break you and humble you to the core. He's lives 30min away from me. Maybe one day I'll run into him. Phil singlehandedly saved my life. I was a teenager, minutes from killing myself, and then I heard this growl and primitive voice It was the best damn sound ever...Pantera was on Headbangers Ball that night. It's the first time I ever had someone articulate the pain I felt. If I ever meet him sometime, I'd just give him a huge hug and tell him a heart felt thank you.

I have a back/neck injury, I can only imagine what years of touring must have done. I feel for Phil!

I've been a metal fan since I was 16 (im now 50) ...I saw many bands come and go but in my humble opinion no one and i mean no one had the impact that Pantera had ..its true as Phil always says Pantera was a way of life ...I saw them live 4 times here in the UK...hands down best concerts I've ever been to and I've been to many..it was just different with Pantera there was a feeling of mass unity when you went to see them ..amazing experiences I will never forget...r.i.p dime and vinnie

You missed out. I saw them back in the 90s, just saw them recently. His time was great, but back when I saw them- never saw that many breasts in my life. Women just got on top of men's shoulders to flash the band. It was a crazy time and they played flawlessly.

This man and the band he was with had the greatest significance for me in my teen years in the 90s. Both the upturn and the downturn. you all 4 have a place with me forever. 😎🎶🤘☄

I met him in TUBA CITY, ARIZONA(???) on the Superjoint tour. He did not seem racist, just in pain, from his back. He gave his body to play for us all. Took The Boys to A NEW LEVEL! 😉🤘 Thank You Phil. 🤘👹🤘

I think it is really sad that Vinny never wanted to let his anger towards Phil go. I cannot imagine the pain he carried with him until his death, but speaking from personal experience, cleaning out wounds and allowing them to heal is monumental. And now it will never happen. Kudos to Phil for being transparent.

actually vinnie stuck up for phil a few times in the past even when not talking to him. He just looked like a marriage going into a divorce and going on different paths. If he didnt want to renew that friendship thats on him and he had that right the people telling him he had to make amends with him are what I call the assholes. He has his feelings... respect them.

Pantera is the only band I'm so sad I'll never get the chance to see 😞 . At least I saw Slayer.

One of my old bands got to open for Pantera twice on the Cowboys tour in NY. The first show they came in a beat up camper and there were a few hundred people at the show. 7 months later, they showed up in a beautiful tour bus and there were 1,500-2,000 people at the show. It was not surprising to us how fast they were becoming popular because that first show, even in front of that small crowd they were the best live band any of us had ever seen. The second show was even better with the energy of a big crowd. We got to hang with Phil a little before both shows and he was the most down-to-earth and nicest guy..

Got it see the new version of Pantera in Scranton PA a few weeks ago. Amazing show! Life changing show! Just the tailgating alone was amazing because all of us were there for the common love of music and the love of Pantera!

Met him in 02' and 09' He was really bad off in 02 and trashing Pantera. 09 after he got clean he was a completely different person, very friendly and down to earth. That changed my opinion of him.

Phil is as real as they get... Love this man.

I can definitely relate to him because I have a fourth and fifth lumbar spine injury and it has completely changed my life and ruined so many of my dreams over the last seven years. I have not gotten addicted to pain meds I don't take them at all I have not been able to get the surgery that I need so I suffer every single day I can't lift anything over 30 lb. Everything that I do is hindered everything I do is held back by this injury. I can't work out and get in shape the way I want to why can't pick up the heavy things for my family I can't pick up my nieces and nephews because they're getting too big I can't pick up my grandkids because they're getting too big. I know what he's talking about and he is speaking the truth. It is life-altering it is devastating it is truly heartbreaking to have a spinal injury.

Beautiful. Honest. And inspiring to anyone; musician or plumber or janitor or doctor, or anything at all. I think that any person on planet earth could benefit from these stories. Especially if they got comfortable and just listened through headphones without looking at the screen. For no other reason but to listen completely. And i agree: everyone would benefit from Phil being on The Joe Rogan Experience. Who do we gotta talk to in order to make this happen???

Phil might not be the most articulate guy in the world, and yeah he’s done some questionable things, but I really feel like his true colors came through in this interview (especially towards the end) and I can say this guy seems like a good dude, and just as human as any of us. Coming to terms with the mistakes you’ve made in the past and learning from them and moving forward is a sign of becoming a real man. I felt like it was me talking there in the end, having also sorted through the wreckage of my past after putting the drugs and bottle down. Much respect. Rock on Anselmo.

I knew him/them before Cowboys, before the drugs and the break down. They were really the nicest group of guys. Despite the show he puts on, Phil is a kind generous person.

Glad he brought up the contradiction of him saying he couldn't tour with Pantera because of his back but then he's touring Super Joint

I really want you people to understand what severe chronic pain can do to a person. Before anyone is critical towards Phil, understand that pain changes you and it does not change you for the better... ever. Imagine something nagging at you every single day for the rest of your life. Making you constantly uncomfortable, unable to do the things that you want and NEED to do, unable to perform at the level that you know you're capable of. Chronic pain is horrible, I know because I live with it every day. Suicide becomes a regular thought, anger and lashing out become your therapy.

You are so right. Phil is a living legend, thanks to the fact that he found the strength to overcome addictions. It is commendable. It’s strength..it’s facing your demons and winning.

I have chronic pain , from wounds I received as well as a tbi. I never became a junkie. Pain doesn't change character.

I had 2 ruptured discs in my lower spine and it got so bad could barely walk and had to lay on the floor every day after the little that i did for a year until my surgery. The day before my surgery I could barely use any force to take a piss because the pain in my calve was unbearable. The surgery helped me 100% im very thankful i got it. I could see if he was being pushed to do activities and barely even stand . To lapse into drugs to ignore pain

I feel it, I’m only 22 and I want to Jill myself nearly every day. Tried many times. kinda sick of hearing it gets better. Maybe it will one day, but it won’t when you say exercise and eat healthy. I exercised and ran 30 miles a week for a year or so, worked in the Amazon warehouse the other 3 days. I had never been more depressed and in more pain in my entire life.

If Phil wasnt in so many projects, he would be an amazing voice over actor. Dudes voice is fckn wicked.

@@user-zg4zv7jl2p but he seems so nice, inspiring and kind in his interviews despite his aggressive performance . The tougher is outside, the kinder is inside.

i was a 16 year old kid ditching school with a few of my best friends. we found our seats at the Denver Coliseum, just left of the stage. we weren't prepared for the absolute wall of sound that we were about to experience. needless to say we were blown away. the best show i have ever seen to this day was the first time i got to witness Pantera live. we saw them three more times over the next few years. I was one of the lucky ones. R.I.P Dime and Vinny we miss you. i've had falling-outs with friends and it seems like such a tragedy that Phil and vince were never able to at least sit down and speak to each other before Vince passed. I know Phil is no angel but it's just sad to me.

At the coliseum? Or Big Mack? The coliseum was basically uninhabitable in the 90s

I am so glad I saw this interview of phil.There are many people who are til this day misunderstanding his addiction for Pantera splitting up.Well...those people can kiss my S.
