Eddie Fisher - If I Never Sing Another Song (1984)

From "Eddie Fisher ‎- After All"
Released in 1984; Bainbridge Records ‎(BT6262)
After having not recorded in the nearly 15 years since his 1969 Al Jolson tribute album ('You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet'), Eddie Fisher attempted to stage a comeback. Unfortunately, an attempted comeback tour in 1983 was unsuccessful. In addition, Eddie recorded a new album titled 'After All', which he initially tried to stop from being released, which...based on its relative obscurity...seems to have made very little impact.
This album is so hard to come by that no tracks have yet to show up online, as such I'm finally making some select tracks available. Enjoy Eddie Fisher fans!

I knew Eddie Fisher when I chaired the JOLSON Centennial in NY LA and England...He sang this song at French Lick Resort in Indiana He invited me to join him and when he sang this song and most of his other hits he forgot the words to most of them. Such a wonderful talent and wonderful person A real shame to go out the way he did. RIP dear friend

Back when he recorded this, I was a very very young singer - and, although I never met Mr Fisher, I can say that the Producers were not that happy with the sessions and neither was Eddie. I have the album still (but don't ask me where) and the producers said they wished that they could give me the tracks to record the vocals (but of course they couldn't do that for legality reasons) - at that time, I was known for doing commercial jingles and radio bits and live nightclub things - anything that came my way (well, almost anything) that required singing I did. Mr. Fisher, whom I admired, could still sing but certainly not the way he once did. I don't mean that in a critical or unkind manner - but I lived in New York at the time and did commercials and various recordings at the Studio where he did this - in fact, that's why I have the album, they gave me a copy.

I was not aware of this album until I dropped on this. I can't say that I can "like" or otherwise on this recording for here we have a singer who "In his Heyday" in the 1950's was terrific but here, 30 boozy years later we hear the remnants of what was once a great voice and he was only 56 when he recorded this. I invite you listen to my recording of the song which I recorded at the age of 70. Joe Johnson, If I Never Sing Another Song. … I did and still do at 80. Cheers, Joe

I have seen Eddie sing in person many times and he never lost his voice. He sang this song in his shows in the 90s' and he sounded so much better than he does on this album. Eddie did not want this album released back in 1983, but it was released anyway.

I don’t hear attrition or neglect in Fisher’s voice and I am also a singer. I just listened to your version (+ Nessum Dorma) and your pride in your talent is entirely justified! However, Eddie’s voice is immediately recognizable and in this song he sounds like he’s singing in a bari-tenor range. That could have been his choice or perhaps his range had indeed narrowed. There’s no sin in that Joe, voices age differently. Finally, while your interpretation is excellent; Eddie had lived the story of the song. In his “heyday” he may have been behind only Elvis and Sinatra in popularity. The song is sung by a fallen star and it fits him like a handmade suit. So as well as you sing it, it will never have the same poignancy.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to reply to your post @@pjk9056 but I have to say that I meant no disrespect by my original comments and since your reply I have listened to the track a few times and I realise what you say is fair comment. Eddies version here perfectly reflects the meaning of the song. Best wishes, Joe.
