One of the great things about Sheeran is that he takes beautiful old traditional songs, like this and “The Parting Glass”, and makes them cool for young people to listen to. They’d probably never hear them otherwise. And maybe it gives them an appetite for more great older music. He also has a wonderful voice, of course.

Oh the summer time is coming And the trees are sweetly blooming Where the wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather Would you go, lassie, go? And we'll all go together Where the wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather Would you go, lassie, go? And I will build my love a bower And yon pure crystal fountain And around it I will place All the colors of the mountain Would you go, lassie, go? And we'll all go together Where the wild mountain thyme Grows around the blooming heather Would you go, lassie, go? And If my true love's gone I will surely find another And to her I will sing Things that make her know I want her Would you go, lassie, go? And we'll all go together Where the wild mountain thyme Grows around blooming heather Would you go, lassie, go?

I Like it, Wild Mountain Thyme" (also known as "Purple Heather" and "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?") is a folk song written by Francis McPeake, a member of a well known musical family in Belfast, Ireland, and of Scottish origin.[1] McPeake's lyrics are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), a contemporary of Robert Burns. Tannahill's original song, first published in Robert Archibald Smith's Scottish Minstrel (1821-24), is about the hills (braes) around Balquhidder nearLochearnhead. Like Burns, Tannahill collected and adapted traditional songs, and "The Braes of Balquhither" may have been based on the traditional song "The Braes o' Bowhether".

I am curious as to what people here consider the 'original' version? It is basically an, at least, 200 year old folk song from Scotland which has slowly been edited and adapted by countless artists. You can have favorite versions, but an 'original' version is not something I think we can know. What are these better versions? I fancy a listen to see if I agree.

Cannot he did a version of this!! This song is so special to me - My late grandfather Barry died back in 2009 on St Patrick’s Day - He was one hundred percent Irish - I was only 7 when he died and didn’t see him a whole lot because he lived in Connecticut and I live in Virginia - It sucks and is so devastating that I don’t remember much about him and that he isn’t here to watch me grow up - I am 21 now and it still doesn’t quit hurting - every year on St Patrick’s day my mom , her mom and her sisters meet up in Spring Lake, NJ to celebrate and honor my grandpa’s life - they all go out to St. Stephen’s Irish Pub and there is a band called The Snakes that play there every year on St. Patrick’s Day - or St. Barry’s Day which is what my mom and her family call it - and play Wild Mountain Thyme in honor of my grandpa and they always say “this is for Barry’s Girls” - Miss you Pop Pop - May you Go Lassie Go and may your Irish eyes always be smiling through 💚🧡🇮🇪☘️

jensen's version is full of genuine hardcore emotions, especially his love for his family (danneel, jj, jared, spnfamily) and singing this song reminds him of so many intimate moments in his life like singing to jj and now us and i think this is why i prefer jensen's but ed's is very good too i love both

I would say Jensens and Eds versions are both boring, Jensen never even bothered to to learn how to play his even more basic version of a basic song correctly. Both these men are a million miles from the origins and the soul from which this song was written from.

Jessen and Ed Sheerin are not Scottish, the song is best sang by a Scottish artist as the song is about Scotland

I have now seen both him and Jensen sing it and Ed has such a soft voice that it makes for peaceful listening. Jensen, on the other hand, has such a deep voice that when he sings this song it gives me literal chills... both are such beautiful versions!

From the perspective of someone who is a fan of the original, and not a pathetic teenage girl - this is absolutely delightful. Only the second time I've heard his voice, but I do believe young Mr Sheeran is here to stay.
