ECU Tuning for Idiots - Standalone vs Piggyback vs Re-flashing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Most people have no idea how to tune a car or what's involved, and I don't like that. TUNE ALL THE STUFF.

    Someone had effed with the transmission tune in my 6L40e and I literally could not find a person in Finland willing to flash the PCM for me as LT1 PCM flashing has a brick-y reputation (and I was about 20 years late). So I googled a ton and I did it myself. Software to read/write and a good tuning software to modify LT1 pcm files are free online, so why the hell not. Only needed an OBD1/ALDL cable. I haven't done much, but by downloading a stock tune and a bunch of modified tunes I got the idea of what to do and by copying and pasting bits from the here and there. After a few weekends and test drive, I have a tune I'm pretty happy with, I managed to fix the nonsense with the trans, didn't brick the PCM and learned something new.

    Re-flashing is definitely a viable option, you just have to be very careful and do your research like you did. I'm currently attempting to re-flash the tune on my Sentra, there's a lot involved and all the software is open source. When you mess up when using a standalone or piggyback you just reset it and it works again, mess up when flashing a stock ECU and it's usually a couple hundred dollar mistake or more.

    I’ve been going the reflash route with my car. The programs available for my car are pretty limited unless I want to buy a tune. I’m going to try to decompile the ecu file or create a more in depth definition map before resorting to buying a tune from the only guy who can do it. Got the engine light for my cats off last week and it seems to be getting better gas mileage.

    Companies like ECUmaster also make Plug and play adapters for some vehicles. And for my car my tuner did custom wiring to the oem ecu harness. I just had to route an imap tube to the intake (ecumaster has a sensor inside the ECU) and hat to wire a wideband to the ecu.

    Tuning cars are one of those things that are talked so casually, yet is way more complicated than most are willing to explain. At the end of the day the number-one rule is it costs a lot of money and time, and is wrought with potential failure, so don’t do it to the daily

    You can do it somewhat cheaply, my Microsquirt setup for example was about $800 sensors and all. It took me forever to install my first standalone, but I'm confident I could do a simple setup in a couple months now.

    Good video, but IMHO soldering is not the best way since it will oxidize quite quickly (3-4 months). Not a problem if wire is new and isolated correctly, but it happens rarely. Twisting wires works great (if there's not gonna be a ton of current flowing)

    ok so id like to add, (from my own car on "ecutek" with pro license self tunes from stock file) its not just rom. they open up the full operating power of the ecu to allow for extra tables, im talking in the 100's most of you dont see. it add 6 inputs and 4 out puts for signals, so it can run a v8 on a stock brz ecu or add your extra sensors like afr psi e85 ect. and make you own table with xy info and reaction. It complete gets rid of the factory firmware where a dealer can not see the ecu anymore. so yea basically a standalone now with stock. even a boost controller on a na ecu not 3rd party lol

  • @HatersGarage

    @HatersGarage

    That's actually wicked cool. They really left the security for those ECU's wide open, huh? You've basically got all the features on an MS3. Most people don't have that much tunability out of their stock computer unfortunately.

  • @HatersGarage

    Usually it's other way around, A simple setup will have a MAP sensor but no MAF sensor. you can add a MAF sensor to aid with tuning, but it's not mandatory.
