Regarding plastic bottles :why doesn't the producers of products such as cleaning products whether it is for the home or personnel use do refills. Instead of having to buy bottles we take our bottles to be filled over and over again. We would only need the product not the bottle. The refill stations might even take less room in stores which in turn would use less resources to build these big box stores. Just a thought i'm sure this could work with many products as well reduce the garbage etc..

Lisa, it's our dysfunctional economic system. Society has been optimized for profit alone, not for health, not for well-being, certainly not for 'democracy'... for the 'bottom line'. It is simply cheaper to sell the products in disposable bottles than to dispense them on a reusable container model. We even have to fight city by city and state by state in the US to make beverage cans and bottles recyclable. That makes people think they are actually doing something meaningful to help the environment, so they go on buying poorly made, disposable items, sometimes for huge amounts of money (thing the iPhone ripoff). If we want our kids to live in a habitable world, we need to change the economic system to one that respects the limits of the Earth and does not seek to 'cash it in' as quickly as possible to enrich the rich.

Hi Lisa, here in the UK there are greener stores that provide refill buys for cleaning products such as Bio D and Ecover where you take in your own bottle for refill, perhaps you can check you local area for similar options.

cities are a machine, they don't regard the environment or the people,at this brief but crucial time in earths history: people are part of the environment but also fueling the emergency we now have on our hands.
