Eco India: Could sewage water be an answer to our water woes?

Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
Over the last decade, the city has worked aggressively to build systems to treat all the sewage it generates. Following a government directive, larger apartment complexes now have to set up Sewage Treatment Plants to treat and re-use their own waste water. We visited two such plants to find out if this approach is easing Bengaluru's water woes.

Sewage should be used for construction purposes, permissible industrial use, for watering public green spaces, or used as feed for further purification and making it more pure, etc. The sewage treatment industry was developing well in 2011 but I don't know about it now. Looks like this eco method really wins over electrically operated plants.

Tharun and Team is on a mission to restore every of drop of water that can be reused. The EcoSTP solution is real and is already in use. I am not sure whether it can be used to treat the "rajkaluve" or drain water entering into lakes of Bengaluru. If that happens, most of the Bengaluru lakes will be host pristine water and every corner of Bengaluru can become Ooty or Kodai. Ground water recharge will be another plus. Keep it up ECOSTP team. Thank you for doing this!!

pretty interesting, but how excactly does the eco STP clear the eventual accumulation of waste filtrate in all those tanks? there will definitely require a cleanup right? i mean, even water filters in homes need to be changed after some time, should be even more relevant for sewage filters....

Ok, centralised may not keep pace with the burgeoning population, but why not a cluster model? Say, STPs for a particular area or sector? Wouldn't that be more cost effective? And the excess water can be managed in a better manner as well!

This is a stupid government policy to decentralize STP without providing people a list of licensed vendors who can install these small domestic STPs. What does the government expect? People should just become overnight inventors? I do admire the residents in this video going through all this trouble to treat their own sewage but for the majority they would just let it go untreated

I use waste water for flushing , and double use the water or re use water for waste toilet flushing. All should do it in their wash room

I am a water professional, who is specialising in Water Treatment for a Municipality in a GCC Country. In my opinion using eco-stp is a stupid idea and you will never be able to remove E-Collie and F-Collies using this method other than using Chemicals. Water treatment is a very complex process and it should not be treated like a toy, since water recycling is future. The government should connect the housing complex with sewage pipe lines/lifting stations and treat it effectively in the Central STP.
