Echo SRM-225 Trimmer Bogs at Full Throttle

How to replace the air filter and fuel filter on an Echo SRM225 weed trimmer that bogs at full throttle. Easy step by step repair without tearing into the carburettor. Easy troubleshooting ideas to diagnose the poor running condition.

01:33 Spark arrester screen clean up
02:42 Fuel filter replacement
03:39 Replace spark arrester
05:06 Replace air filter
05:26 The money shot
The tools I like and use most often:
Magnetic spark plug socket set: amzn.to/3CzmpvO
Tachometer: amzn.to/3sHibiH
Vessel Megadora JIS screwdriver set: amzn.to/363RFqO
Channellock Bent Needle-nose pliers: amzn.to/3I5DbnA
Long 1/4 Quick-connect Torx Driver Bits: amzn.to/3HUNgnm
Spark Tester: amzn.to/3CxW2qi
OTC Leak-down Test Kit: amzn.to/3CyUhJn
Compression Tester: amzn.to/3IWd6sp
Wear your safety glasses, or you'll shoot your eye out. Try on some gloves. Take off that spark plug boot. Clean your room. Open the windows, those fumes are nasty. Just 'cause I do it, don't think it's the end all, be all solution. There's plenty more ideas out there, I can't take responsibility if you slice off a few fingers after watching my videos. And don't just pour that toxic stuff down the sewer or in the ditch, dispose of waste responsibly. Just be safe, OK?

Thank you for the vid. I usually take the spark arrestor screen hold it with small vice grips and torch it. Even a small lighter will work. Torch it until it gets red hot and burn off all the carbon. It takes about 5 minutes.

There is the fuel tank vent thingy, that resembles fuel filter but just dangles, could be that. I am second guessing the carb cleaning. It is bunch of tiny jets that could be obstructed and not easy to access and rinse or blow. I just checked spark arrester and replaced the carb rebuild kit due to sticky membrane and I am also here. Spark plug is still ahead of me but I think good ole Italian tune up - running the thing at high revs may make a difference with some time and patience.

Have you tried adjusting the carb? Over time as filters and screens get clogged, folks will adjust those screws to compensate. You didn't say if you replaced the fuel pump and metering diaphragm when you cleaned the carb, or how you cleaned the carb. Maybe another check of the metering lever to make sure it's not bent at a bad angle? Hope this helps.

Question here: I took the filter right out and left it out; the trimmer still bogs down. I am guessing it’s the air filter and maybe needs a new spark? Assuming the filter is clean and a new spark is installed, would the bogging down then be caused by the screen?

  • @TheLawnmowerLady

If the spark arrestor screen is clogged, it produces too much back pressure for the exhaust, and will run poorly. 2-stroke small engines need to breathe adequately on the intake and the exhaust.

I would have pressure/vacuum tested it for sure. But I try to avoid pulling a carb apart since I have a limited supply of gaskets, pumps, and diaphragms on hand.

Huh?1 Now you make me go back and look 😀 On another video on the same model (not the same machine) and I used some T-handles that the size markings had long worn off. I had purchased some long reach quick-connect torx driver bits after that, and marked the T-27 (always used on Stihl) with some orange fingernail polish. I did not use that T-27 long reach bit in this video. Unfortunately both machines have gone back to their owners.
