Brosnan was the first actor after Connery to look comfortable with the role. Moore clearly wasn't happy with the cold-blooded elements and Dalton didn't want to be burdened with the humorous elements. Brosnan was able to play it both ways.

He couldn’t have done it. He was too busy goofing off. Goldeneye tried to rough him up a bit, but he still wanted to be a goof. I’ve never seen him be totally serious. Even in other films. Everything is a big joke. At least Connery, Craig and Dalton could joke and keep their eye on the ball. And the constipated look on Brosnan - yikes.

I agree with Ebert on this, go back and look at some of the older bonds this movie is no more camp than lets say Diamonds are forever, Moonraker or The Spy who loved me, And then there's the usual complaint about the invisible car, yet there seem to be no complaint about the fact that Jaws could bite through steel cables.

I agree with your point, I think many people expected the franchise to have "moved on" from that sort of campiness (especially given the impact of the Austin Powers films), so when they saw such things it appeared less as "oh hey it's another fun return to ye olde Bond tropes" and more "oh no the Bond franchise is regressing."

@@rjmacready9828 You may be correct, but my problem with brosnan was that he tried to much to please everyone, taking all the best bits of Connery and Moore and blend them into one, which made his bond lack it’s own identity. Whereas Dalton took the approach of having a darker and more serious tone which set himself apart from Moore and Connery to be unique, brosnan did the total opposite and that’s why I prefer daltons take because he was willing to try and do something new, whether people liked this new direction or not.
