The perfect role for a perfect mezzo-soprano! Her voice transcended the stage and she and Cossotto were without a doubt the best "favorites" for this beautiful aria.

stignani wa of course an expert singer with great control and she has many trusty followers. but you never hear a special timbre, anything exiting or emphatic from her. is she hiding her personality or is she just cool?

I think she was just cool. She's interviewed in the book the Last Prima Donnas, and in it she comes off as detached and introverted. Nothing wrong with it, of course, but one does sometimes miss the fire of a Simionato, Cossotto, Bumbry, Obraztsova, etc.
