Another future podcast is to consider the importance of centralized DC rectification and DC power circuits in a residential setting. With the March of smart Dc leakage devices there are potential energy savings on moving that way and also better integrate PV and EV. Of course efficient energy use will be important in the context of helping to support policies to address climate change. Centralized DC rectification does lead to clear efficient energy uses and savings in an industrial setting but maybe more challenging to address in a response setting. It’s an important topic for all electricians especially as we move away from AC circuits in a residential setting to DC. That then also raises the issue of differences in terms of personal protective devices and overcurrent/ fire protection for DC circuits relative to what is currently available for AC circuits.

Look at the USA NEC2020 handbook version which is around 1300 pages after the Irish regs….

Disconnects for emergency responder uses / fire service, paramedics that’s a big thing now in the USA. Question is would you lock off the disconnect? With tools only available to specialists to remove/cut.

Type B or B+ RCD? There is a lot more here and it would be good for when you bring in the RCD manufacturers to get them to discuss the research work on these that brought them to these and other newer faster tripping and at lower fault current advanced RCDs. Here I believe our type A GFCIs are way better than your type A and actually look more like your type Bs.

Please get rid of the word compliance in the regulation. It’s enough to say you shall do this or that if you want to mandate something to get it done….but we need to move away from a compliance based approach to a risk-based approach in my view you are not an electrician if you cannot think what risks arise in different settings and lack a commitment to lifelong CPD. Let me say when I talk of risk-based I also mean think of risks that could arise in the future and forward-looking basis from that installation. It’s not just about now..
