Eating Xoi Xeo at Xoi Yen | Hanoi Vietnam

✈️ Check out the travel app we created that helps you find incredibly cheap flights to the amazing destinations all over the world! Try it risk free ➡️ faredrop.app/y... ⬅️
Eating Xoi Xeo at Xoi Yen was definitely an experience. To be completely honest we're not exactly sure what we were eating. It tasted pretty good, but the menu said it was sticky rice topped with FAT so that stopped Kara from truly enjoying the food.
We read on a few websites that we should eat Xoi Xeo at Xoi Yen, so we decided to today while we were in the old quarter. We probably should have done a little bit more research... I think maybe we should have topped our Xoi Xeo with meat or beans or something.
Next time we'll do more research before eating Xoi Xeo haha.
If you want to know what it's like eating Xoi Xeo in Hanoi's Old Quarter check out this VLOG!

I almost choked when Nate said the mung bean ball was a ball of fat 😂. The dish is Xôi Xéo, it’s sticky rice with mung beans and deep fried shallots. Also, the white balls in the rice is typically corn.

Xoi Xeo is sticky rice with mung bean and fried shallots, drizzle with some fragant oil that they fried the shallots in. So don't worry, that yellow thing is just the cooked mung bean :P

@@gbutt3554 Hahaha, thanks so much! I appreciate the comment! When I found Kara & Nate's channel, I realized how much I enjoyed them as people and their content, so I went back and watched every video from the very beginning. I made a point to leave a comment on each and every one (sometimes more when I had several things to say) and let them know that what they were doing mattered to me. As far as their new videos, I'm really enjoying them! I like seeing them explore our home country. I did find myself worrying more about Nate during the CT trip, but he's such a warrior and he made it through just fine. :-)

Haha it's actually not sticky rice topped with fat :D The yellow shredded topping is mashed mung-bean(s) :D I think by "fat" here they mean the oil used for the deep-fried shallots topping :D "Xoi xeo" is usually only yellow sticky rice with the mashed mung-bean and deep-fried shallots topping. The one you guys had is called "Xoi ngo" (Sticky rice with corn), it's basically "Xoi xeo", but with corn - cooked together with the sticky rice :D Btw, "X" in Vietnamese is spelled like "S" in the English word "Six" :D

Those "round things" are a form of corn called hominy: Dried corn kernels soaked in an alkaline solution to make the protein in the corn more digestible. The kernels swell up and soften, and develop a different kind of pleasing flavor.

I don't know if you are still in Viet Nam. If you are going to Da Nang, try "bún mắm nêm" as the central part of Viet Nam is famous for a wide variety of "mắm" (fermented fish/shrimp). You can also try "bánh bèo", "tré", "bánh căn" over there. If you are going to Ho Chi Minh city in the South, well, I don't even know what to recommend as there are so many. Maybe some exotic ones like sea snails/cones?
