The contrast in videos. Here i see an absolute chad catching and eating his lunch. before i saw the ssyoung chick who bought squids from the market, cut their top thingy off but didnt kill them, and laughed while they danced around alive with salt and sauce being pored into their head. i know some see animals dont feel pain like us but squid are pretty smart. they gotta feel that somehow. anyway commend this chad, 1 quick cut, and a delicious meal

My only problem with eating raw mackerel , is that when I cut them up for bait , Ive seen worms wiggle out , and their eggs you cant see . Prepared Saba has usually been frozen and soaked in vinegar or salt , and safe to eat . And delicious ! Raw squid is delicious . Some kelp to snack on also adds a nice crunch to whatever else you might be eating . Go for it !

The thing about Mackerels is that the meat decays very fast. Fresh macs when you cut into them, the meat holds together much better. Perhaps eating no too fresh macs is one or the reason ppl in America doesn’t like mackerel sushi. The other reason is the stigma against mackerels. That they are a bait fish. Or trash fish.

I'm with Jocelyn, in that even fresh mackerel is a very strong oily tasting fish. Love your "saba" application. But if I ever eat it cooked, I have to really flavor it with salt and pepper and fry the daylights out of it and make it crispy with just a dusting of cornstarch but I still need a good squirt of lime or lemon juice with it. Love your channel, man!

  • @gs6810

You had two species of "mackerel" there: one being a true mackerel aka pacific mackerel, aka green back mackerel (the one with the zebra stripe pattern). That is the fish you make saba sushi with. The other "mackerel" was a jack mackerel, aka horse mackerel, also erroneously called a spanish mackerel in northern california by many but it is not a spanish mack. I prefer the name jack mackerel as it is in the same family as jacks and pompano fish, not a true mackerel. Sushi made from jack mackerel is called Aji. Both are good, but they have very different flavors and textures, the mackerel being softer and stronger flavored, and the Aji being firmer and more mild.

If you bleed and put your mackerel on ice right away the meat grains won't be splitting like that for atleast 24 hours. When you have mackerel that fresh you can also eat them with out the vinegar cure which is a delicacy only the fisherman can enjoy due to the speed of their decay. The cure is as much a method to preserve them as it is for the flavor, but i agree it is delicious.

Excellent channel! Nice content for sure. I love to fish myself, and love eating fish!! I would like to mention one thing though... I have been totally into sashimi for years, and recently have found the following horrific truth that has changed my way of thinking! First of all, eating any type of fish straight out of the ocean is not safe at all!!!! Vinegar dipping is just not enough!!! The parasites and worms are very abundant in today's fish from the ocean. All this is incredibly scary! One of my buddies has been battling ( with doctors help) parasites and worms in his whole body, and in his eyes for 1 year now!!! Another friend that caught salmon on a camping river shoreline trip, ate some under cooked salmon, and 4-weeks later, found a rather large worm more than 10" long coming out of his rectum!!!!! I don't want to gross people out but, all this is 100% true!!!! Anytime you want to eat sashimi, you MUST deep freeze everything first!!! I know it's sucks to have to do this, but believe you me, once you get parasites, and worms in you, you are screwed!!!!!!!

Eating a live squid would be barbaric as cephalopods are actually extremely smart creatures with the ability to count, solve problems, and may have the capacity to feel emotion. They also have nociceptors so they can feel pain. Luckily, the squid is not live! The muscle cells are still intact after it dies so it looks alive! Eating right upon catching sounds amazing, it must be so fresh! Keep up the great videos man!
