It’s so fun watching someone who isn’t fluent in viet go and explore, because I can totally relate to the “I understand what you’re saying but I can’t say it.” Also I can see the struggle with you trying to understand north viet when you’re south viet. Growin up close with my mom who is from the south and then trying to communicate with my dad side who’s from the north, struggles.

omg i really love seeing mai in vietnam. i just went to taiwan, where my family is from, and then japan with a friend who grew up in tokyo but left when she was seven. i feel similarly that there were so many things in taiwan that were familiar to me, and the language i can speak it but not at an expert level, and it's so cool to experience that but also see my japanese friend and mai go through the same thing in their home countries ❤
