Eating in Mapo-gu Seoul on a Budget | Mangwon Market, Daeheung, and Sinchon

#korea #seoul #koreanfood
Hello there! We decided to create a new series where we explore different areas in Seoul and try some cheap and amazing restaurants while showing a bit of what life is like in each neighbourhood. We started out in Mapo-gu (마포구), home to one of the most famous tourist areas of Hongdae (홍대). In this video we explore Mangwon (망원) and the traditional Mangwon Market (마포시장) where there is a kalguksu (칼국수) restaurant. Then we go to Daeheung Station (대흥역), an older neighbourhood right next to Sogang University (서강대학교) that has a really good samgyeopsal (삼겹살) restaurant. And finally, we go to a legendary tonkatsu (돈까스) restaurant in Sinchon (신촌) right next to Yonsei University (연세대학교). Enjoy!

    Thanks so much for the warm comments as always Howard! 😊 Hope you can make it to Korea some day! It's really unique in the fact that it was pretty untouched by the outside world for a really long time and has only recently developed, so there are so many interesting things to learn and explore here!

    Thanks a lot Thoan! 😁 You should definitely check out the 돈까스 place if you haven't been! If you are biking on the Han River, there is a really good road that follows the 서강대교 all the way up to 신촌역, and there is a lot of room to bike next to the cars to get there. Check it out if you are passing by! Stay safe out there!!

    Thanks so much Alberto! 😊 Seoul is such a unique city in the sense that it can be fully futuristic, fully traditional, super expensive, and super cheap all at the same time. You can literally make it the place you want it to be, and it's incredibly safe which makes it super comfortable to live in. Will try and show as much as we can, as it's a really special place! 😁

    Hi Ruskovski this is great! You definitely have to try the cheap restaurants in Sinchon, and give the Samgyeopsal place a try too as it's a really local joint and you can see a slice of life here without a lot of tourists. We're going to keep making videos like this for each district in Seoul so hopefully we can find some more cool places to share. Hope you enjoy your trip to Korea!! 😁

    Is it possible to eat well socially in korea (work events, family gathering) if you don't eat spicy foods well?. I may have to try and raise my spicy tolerance.

  • @lostthenfound

    @lostthenfound

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is a really good question! A common misconception here is that all Korean food is really spicy, but a lot of Koreans also have a very low spicy tolerance and prefer to avoid really spicy food. Usually there will be different options and spiciness levels to accommodate people's spicy tolerance, and it's completely acceptable to tell people: 매운 걸 잘 못 먹어요 (Mae-un geol jal mot meo-geo-yo) = I can't eat spicy food that well. Actually to be honest, most people in Korea assume I can't eat spicy food so they ask in advance if I'd like it less spicy than normal, and I usually have to tell them to make it the same as they do for Koreans because I like spicy food. However, I'd go to your supermarket and look for Shin Ramyun (the red Korean instant noodles). That's the exact spicy level you will deal with a lot here, so it's a good idea of what to expect and you can see how spicy things will be when you get here and if you need to raise your tolerance a bit or not.

  • @ONCEbittenTWICEshyshyshy

    @ONCEbittenTWICEshyshyshy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@lostthenfound Thanks, I'll check out that ramyun and begin my testing!. I think the misconception comes from watching korean media. On a great deal of variety shows, drama's and films, koreans are usually depicted eating spicy kimchi, extra spicy ramyun and stuff like that. It makes it seem like koreans rarely eat anything other than spicy food. I suppose its prudent of me to expect the media to play to that bias and expectation, and that not every meal in korea is going to burn my face off!.
