Eating in Jongno-gu Seoul on a Budget | Jonggak, Dongmyo Market, Jongno 3-ga

#korea #seoul #mukbang
Hello everyone! Jongno-gu (종로구) is arguably the most tourist centric district in Seoul with its traditional palaces and temples, but that doesn't mean that it's only filled with tourist traps! We went to Jonggak Station (종각역), which is right beside Bosingak (보신각), the bell used to ring in the New Year every year. We tried Dwaeji Bulbaek (돼지불백) there from a tiny stall. Then we went to Dongmyo Flea Market (동묘구제시장), the largest flea market in Korea and tried some Jjajangmyeon (짜장면) there for only 3,000 won ($2.30 USD)! Our last stop was in Jongno 3-ga (종로3가) which is an older neighbourhood filled with musical instrument shops where we tried its famous Hangover Soup (해장국) for 2,500 won ($1.92 USD). We had a great time exploring Seoul like a tourist again, and hope this information is helpful for people who want to come to Seoul and sightsee/eat amazing food without breaking bank!

Thanks a lot David! Korea has changed so much in the last 10 years, so it would be really cool to know what it was like in the early 00s! You should make a trip back some day if you haven't. You'll be blown away by the amount of changes, but it still has that gritty edge to it that must have been even more present back then!

... I had mandu at a (ahem) "restaurant" near the military base in Busan. It was called YAKI-MANDU. The establishment consisted of a tent with linoleum over the lumpy dirt ground. I swear it violated every health code in the book. But at 2:00 AM, it was the BEST mandu and rice I have every had! I love those finds.

Hahaha woah that's cool Alex thanks for the share! I also love those random "restaurants" you find in Korea, especially after a night out at 2AM. It's part of what makes Korea what it is for sure! Will have to check out that place and see if it's still around! I'm not sure if you know, but the military base near Itaewon is gone now and they are turning the whole area into parks and apartments now so a lot of the atmosphere from Itaewon has changed. It's not really a military hangout anymore, but more of a Korean date spot to eat international food. A lot cleaner but I miss the old vibes too!

@@lostthenfound... Sorry, it was in Busan, not Seoul -- that 2AM was a little blurry ;) But I do also remember Itaewan as well. I had the best steak, mashed potatoes and corn niblets there at a place called the Tennessee Club. Not Korean food by any stretch, but after a year of nothing but, a medium rare steak hit the spot! It's good the hear that the area is being changed into something nice and welcoming for everyone.

It can be pretty rough to ride directly into 종로/시청 except on quiet weekends. There's an alternative bike-path heavy route (that's muuuuch longer but prettier) by following 홍제천->세검정->부암동->효자동. Unfortunately we'll have to wait for the mud to get cleared off along the 한강 route to 홍제천 :(

Hello Clement Yeo! That's a great video idea! I studied Korean without spending a single dollar and this is how I did it: Monday to Friday: Morning - (Vocab/Reading/Writing/Typing): 1) Study one new lesson from Talk to Me in Korean, write down all of the vocab/sample sentences, and then copy/paste all of the sample sentences and vocabulary into Anki. 2) Review 100 flashcards that I've saved into Anki (at first you will only have a few but this will build over time) 3) Learn 25 new vocab on Memrise 4) Review 100 vocab on Memrise Lunch (Listening/Reading/Speaking): Watch a new video and read/speak everything out loud from Quick Korean (check out the playlists for the right level) kzread.info Dinner: Review 100 Memrise vocab before bed After a full year of doing that, I could speak and understand people enough, so I started meeting Koreans at cafes and we would talk for 1 hour English only and 1 hour Korean only. This made my Korean improve so much, so try to do this as soon as you feel comfortable with it! Good luck with your studying!

@@bryanthorne3474 it's a really hard language to master! My pronunciation/intonation is still not good at all, I have a hard time understanding ajeossis, and my brain gets really tired speaking Korean for long periods of time. I totally understand why a lot of people don't go the distance, as it definitely requires daily study and a ton of effort. I'll make a video talking about it for sure though, as once you get comfortable speaking and listening it definitely opens up a new world while living here!

You two are such a cute couple. I just saw you on Motorcyclist Diaries. I'm full time traveling on My Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Looks like I use the same sleeping bag liner. Would you mind telling me what tent, camping chair and pillow you use. I'm on my second Wenzel Jack Pine 4 tent under $100. It's a good size & weight packed up, and set up give me room for computer bag g helmet in on corner, saddlebags in the opposite corner, then I sleep from the other corner to corner without feeling cramped. 72 weeks full time now and still have not found a chair I like for working on my laptop on those rainy days that won't dig a hole in my tent floor. My pillow is a $3 Walmart pillow that's due for replacement.

Thanks so much Royal Enfield! 😊 Our tent is the Kelty Salida 2. We have had two tents from Kelty and the quality is amazing! Very light and durable with no problems sleeping in them probably over 100 nights now. The camping chair we bought from Coupang in Korea here: www.coupang.com/vp/products/6424563253 However it's not that durable, so I wouldn't recommend it. I'm also looking for a similar chair that you can bring inside the tent without making a hole in it! It would be so much more comfortable for editing! Our pillow is just a $15 pillow from Snowline that you can see here: search.shopping.naver.com/catalog/26629123360?cat_id=50001304 It has been perfect with no problems!

Korea has had another huge wave of Covid recently with over 100K per day, but there are no additional restrictions as a result. The only real requirements are to wear a mask indoors and on public transportation. It's really hard to predict when this wave will end, but if I were you I'd wait until mid September to come just so the weather is a lot nicer anyways!
