Nothing beats Table Top Simulator for recreating the look and feel of the real thing. The DM may struggle with it at first but the players only have to move their minis and roll dice. $10 and you own it.

Last video there were so many people saying they don’t have friends so this is absolutely PERFECT. You are simply the best KZreadr.
This is the online gaming video I wanted to make! Google Meet has served my groups well, sometimes paired with Roll20, sometimes with everyone rolling with actual sheets at home, and the DM having an extra camera over the battle grid when theater of mind won’t suffice. And I love the idea of using Google slides for maps!
This is exactly what I needed right now. I started a game mid-pandemic and we’ve been playing theater of the mind via Zoom with images screen shared but I’ve been wanting to add more maps and visuals but I don’t have a lot of funds to put into it. This video presents a lot more options than most videos. It was kind of hard to find though.
Thank you for this video! Lots of us don't really have the time or resources to prep a good game on roll 20, so this is immensely useful
I have found a lot of success using Discord since it now allows you to use video across any server! I DM for a party of 5 and our first two sessions have been lag-free on Discord's end! To be fair, we all have fairly decent internet, but seeing others face-to-face really does make the difference! Also, thanks for shouting out World Anvil! I've been looking for a better place to prep other than google docs
I go for the Zoom option, letting players roll their own dice and have their own sheets - and share lots of maps and pictures. When it gets tactical I get out the figures and battle map and share a web cam image; makes for a real 'fog of war' for the PCs, whose view can be obstructed. I'm also in a game using Roll20, but prefer the way I'm doing it (we have to use Zoom anyway to get the chat to work well for everyone).
World Anvil and Dungeon Fog are really great. They're super easy to use and have a great community attached to them. The devs are also really cool and are always engaging with the community.
Dude, you are criminally undersubscribed... I'm not even an avid tabletop RPG player but I find your content very entertaining and informative
I'm new to all the details that go into d&d. I'm truly impressed with the effort of game setup and the sheer detail of dm'ing. Its really cool. 💪😎
I’m a writer.. love creating stories. I really want to try to be a DM. I love role play too. Ugh I’m gonna do it. Starting with research!
Super helpful video, thanks a lot! My group basically consisting of only two households has kept us offline so far but we're having to move the game online now - and I just can't be bothered to deal with roll20 (bad experiences) but also don't want to get into anything complicated for the time being. May try your Google drawings suggestion for our next encounter map :)
Thank you for sharing your research on all these resources! Lots of helpful info.
Once I stayed at a friend's house and the whle gang was reunited. We had nothing but a notebook and a pen, 'cause we downloaded some dice at the appstore. That was enough for hours upon hours of an improvised RPG session, which rules we improvised an worked pretty well. After that, it's become our custom to play like that whenever we can (with rules we have polished for this playstyle), so I'm all in for thetre of the mind online. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try it with them.
learning about google draw from this video has SAVED my sessions!! thank you so much!
Thank you Nate, it's really hard playing dnd with my group
I had never thought about using googles picture site. that would be super easy for some new player because its really simple and if they wanted to get in deeper they could transition easily to something else.
This really helped Nate. Thanks. Also how soon can we expect to get a Inkarnate vs Wonderdraft video?

Great vid! I'd add that if your group prefers digital rolling, there are bots for Discord that make it possible.
When my friends and myself started back in 1984 just had the player and DM maps dice and that's it lol pure imagination and it was fun 😁 keep up the work Mate, just starting to get back into D&D and need just need to find a group.
We've used Skype for almost a decade. We don't use video, just roll20. But I understand the desire to see folks on video (and I'm a high school teacher too!)
There are similar videos about this subject, but Nate your video is so damn good. The tips, links etc are priceless.

Owlbear rodeo all the way. I found it out from your channel too. Now me and my friend’s have maps to play on.
Thanks for this. I DM for a bunch of kids (10-14) and we previously used Roll20 and it was super buggy at times. Voice/video would glitch and kept having to reload pages. We were able to move to in person, but this month everyone has colds. So this weekend we head back online and I'm excited to used zoom and Google slides (you can put the map as background). So much less of a faff.

Look into Owlbear Rodeo. It’s my new favorite. Super simple, but more elegant than Google slides because it is designed for tabletop RPG.
Hi I am Brent Burns from the Rec Room Raccoon podcast and I just wanted to recommend the shard tabletop it is completely free and my favorite part is that if you have tons of pdfs of your books you can upload them to shard for free. Shard has maps tokens and a custom search engine so you can search for maps and tokens online. shard is my personal favorite and if you're wondering how my group talks we use discord just like on the podcast. P.S. Our podcast is not a D&D podcast it is a podcast where a few kids mess around and have fun.
Great video dude! I'm running a homebrew campaign on Roll20, but I'm probs gonna opt for doing it in real life, because of audio issues with some of my players through discord.
Another way to use Photoshop is if you have the map loaded in a layer, add multiple layers for each room the players will come into, each layer gets its own name (Room number works best) and a fog of war black cover that only covers the room itself. Instead of erasing with a pen, you simply make the room they are in visible by making the fog of war that relates to the room invisible. Also, you can put traps on invisible layers that are coded with triggers so players who can see your screen will not know what the trap is until your turn the layer on and reveal it. It's a little extra prep time but it works well.

Great idea!
I appreciate this helpful information!
Good points! Thank you for the insight!
This is slightly off topic, but might interest people who are new to role play: my friends and I have been playing werewolves on whatsapp. With a real-time day/night rythm. It can get intense and time-consuming, but each session only lasts a few days. Some elements of gameplays are dropped (like the little girl), but new opportunities also come with the format. Like players communicating in GIFs and emojis after a visit to the dentist, or campaign videos to run for mayor.
You're the one that got me in to d&d
Yessss thank you so much!
I've found running games online is a more intense and stressful experience as a GM. A whole load more of the load is put upon the GM, so I'm tending to keep sessions shorter (2.5 hours instead of 4-5), but my players are generally enjoying them as much if not more than face to face.
Are you going to get to wait till the hard copy of mythic oddessys of theros or a do a review of it from the pdf on D&D beyond
@WASD20
4 жыл бұрын
I have it on D&D Beyond, but will wait for a hardcopy for the review.
i can help you choosing between roll20 and FG. If you ever plan to use them as a tool for classic PnP adventures.... Fantasy grounds IS the choice because you can run it locally while roll20 needs an internet connection
I have arkenforge love it and dungeon painter. I’m thinking of upgrading to fantasy grounds unity and possibly checking out a basic rule set and starter adventure for roll 20 . I’ve yet to get my group to play with me online might be time for a new group when I spoil them with all these platforms I’m forever prepping and dream about playing using D&D Beyond to really help me run the game . I just want to draw more of the custom maps for myself to use .
This is so needed
I havent tested it myself, but a solid free campaign manager is OneNote, just create a notebook, and you can set parts of the notebook as private, or have a players notebook and one for DM. Btw I fully support Fantasy Grounds, its incredible, currently I play with a gang on a Rolemaster (Extremely detailed System) campaign and FG manages all just fine
ugh, theater of the mind... what we all did back in the day... it's like THACO, it's how it all started
i Personaly recommend MapTool for DnD Online sessions. It is easy to learn and if you want to Lvl up your Experience you can use Syrinscape, Fog of war, and manny other Things. Best Part in my opinion is the speak/Think/Point Mechanic on the map. your Mouse turns into a Speak/Think bubble that all players can see. NPC Interaction is Realy funny with this thing. If you are a little into programming you can create your own Macros for diceroling or automatic Ability checks. ~sry for the Bad English...:D
I grew up playing theatre of mind style didn’t find out about the maps and stuff till much later
I don't really know Fantasy grounds but I started to use Roll20 at the beginning of lockdown at it works with me really well. I started a Eberron campaign on it. It's really good.
Cool apps dude. Sounds interesting.
I suggest Roll20... Web application, so, no need to install any software... I tried FG but for the players (specially new ones) can be overwhelming to say to them: you need to install this, then this other thing, then create this accound, then configure this, then listen to the D&D rules... Roll20 has no compatibility issues, so player can access to it even from a tablet or cellphone (not the best option) and having less steps is always better: "go to this website, create your account, we are ready"
Did you try "let's role" ? It's still in alpha test but you can access it. It's awesome =)

Thanks for the suggestion
Zoom for chat, scale module maps in GIMP2.0 or create in DungeonFog(free) - not a fan of the DM/Player interface though since I have to control all the player movement and view windows; its more like a live view as I edit, clunky. Just started up Roll20 (finally got a faster computer thank you gubment check), still learning its features, we did run a session last night and the players really enjoyed being able to control everything and I like being able to reveal already placed elements. Thinking about buying DF sub &/or Roll20 tile/token items - but this was mostly to keep the live group going. Once its safer, we'll start playing in person again. Now to add music to my Roll20 game...
im new to d&d how do you gain xp and how much do you need to level up. And how do you tell how much damage a player took or received.
Nate you are the goto, I might try to DM thanks to your vids.
Funny enough, thanks to the pandemic I have more sessions than ever before. We were to 1 a month due to work and scheduling/family issues, but with all at home.... we manage to make 2-3 sessions a month (each). Trough d20, which I have a set up in a tv-table at home, the virtual session with a Skype video call has worked perfectly for all of us in the 3 groups I have (2 DMind and 1 as a player... for the first time in 18 years)
Nice video!
Talespire, which I think in beta, is 3D tabletop simulator that looks fantastic with 3D lighting effects and even spell effects.

Yeah, that one does look cool. Kind of like a video game.
I don’t think I’ve ever played without theatre of the mind since my group started in middle school and couldn’t afford anything special and just never switched after that
Can you play DnD through just a voice chat? Like without Roll20 or a webcam. How would it work when you can't see a map, or each other's rolls? I've only ever played on roll20. (I'm a baby DM, and I've made a dozen characters, and watched a hundred DnD videos, but only ever played 3 games before.))
Started with Roll20 and eventually moved over to Fantasy Grounds. No regrets.
I run my campaigns on Foundry Vtt through AWS. Never looked back.
Owo I wanna give it a shot!
Thanks!
I recommend Standard Action! Simpler and has a few features that other VTTs make you pay for, for free! :D
No mention of d&d beyond ? I'm not sure how it stacks up against the others, but I'd at least think it was big enough to be mentioned.
Although I prefer not steering others toward something I haven't personally tried, I do believe SIGNAL now has group capabilities. I do use SIGNAL for text; I'm a landline guy with Wi-Fi so to contact others nowadays...
I have never played dnd before specifically cuz people I hang out with think it is too nerdy and the additional learning curve of online tabletop sims is real hard idek where to start.
My two friends have the game but I don't and only one of them has actually played. What do I do?
As always. Love your content. It's very helpful, but I'm wondering do you have any links to d&d games being played online. As I work my own campaign now. I would like to join in on a campaign online, and see how it's played.

@@WASD20 Thanks.. I will look into this, and see if I'm able to play.. I'm also working on my current campaign, and my own KZread channel, but I'd love to get in on a online player.. Only Helps me as I relearn the new d&d 5e.
Not exactly tabletop, but there is an online multiplayer game simply called Dungeons & Dragons online. We (my father, brother and I) always used to play with my uncle, go on Skype, and make a party in game. Just make an account and go
I was hoping for finding groups love playing but need a group in uk 😢
I just want to know how to leave the party in the game... I accidentally accepted someone's invitation and I keep getting messages from then and it's annoying
Problem with Dungeon Fog: free version with watermarks and three map max ain't good enough. World Anvil is great for developing and presenting a campaign, but a board (i have a vBulletin board anyway) works too as a nice cloud solution. But the World Anvil Team is very nice and friendly, have to try it a bit more. Roll20 is nice to use, because as a vtt it works with nearly every system. Fantasy grounds seems more specific. Both are expensive if you have to licence your d&d 5e books again (and perhaps a third time for D&D Beyond). Good old times with the OGL from d&d 3.5 and all the fan projects...
Great video, but im still lost, been watching the "AI presidents play tabletop games" and now i want to try it but seems overwhelming. I would have to play online with my group of friends and not sure where to start when it comes to sheets and chars n making a outline of a adventure ect, was going to try dnd or call of cathulu that one was super good the campaign i seen
Dont judg me, but we are playing over Discord with voicechat only. I know it migth be hard to belive but for use that is just fine. If I dont so the players, after a time I start to see their charakters. No kidding. For us it works, maybe you give it a try too. We also use the textchat too enhanche theatre of the mind with pictures and t get another layer were players can participate incharakter when the focus is not on them. We played a ton of games durng lockdown in this way and we are playing online in this fashion to this day.

WAY I have seen and ROLE GENERATOR seems to me great for RPG directors.
Gonna try google drawings. My group seems to have trouble getting together. Usually because two of them have kids and another lives out of town.
Also, google "Grid Png" and put it in front of the map, but behind the tokens. you are welcome

This idea is good in pandemic times.
I've used Google Slides as my VTT for a few months now and it is so deceptively simple. It sounds ridiculous, it- shouldn't work, but it does for our group lol
We only get 1 day a month. So hopefully something can micromanage because nothing beats playing with hand crafted/painted pieces like the ones my DM makes.
Well what if I don't know anybody who plays and can't pay for the subscription for the game and don't know how to get into a discord server
Magnitic Whiteboard that helps us when we play.

You can find games and parties online by using roll20
since DND has a lot of AOE and range stuff and cover... fights in theatre of the mind never worked out for us. - Not in fights where it's more than 1 enemy. Player A: "Can I cast burning hands on the both of them?" DM: - ya they stand close together. Player B: "hey, but I'm in melee combat with them, don't hit me!" Player A: "but I could get the angle to not hit him" Player C: "wait, shouldn't we be flanking him anyway?" - the answer is NOT just leaving all these mechanics out of the game. The players really liked their stealth, cover and flanking mechanics. Don't take that away. My answer: you don't need maps, but a very very rough sketch of what's going on and who is standing where. That's enough, it's not a lot, but it's VERY necessary.
This is my first time playing d&d
Hey, I wanted to ask if you had a video about some good adventures to buy. And if not, could you and people reading this please give me some suggestions (even though I’ll probably write and publish some of my own)?

I really like the adventure kits from Absolute Tabletop, they are not much more than a session or two. Lost mine of Phandelver is also pretty good, and comes with the starter set, which is only $12 on Amazon. Other than that, some of my favorites are out of the abyss, descent into Avernus, and Storm King’s Thunder.

WASD20 Cool, thanks.
Map tiles, miniatures, tokens, etc. deviates from the immersion - the experience to be memorable as if you were there. For example, watch any movie you love, now think about it - its not as emotionally moving, until you start watching it again - but an adventure, not cluttered by props, but "theater of the mind" - you'll remember years to come when you think or talk about that adventure - like you were there.
I hosted 5 online zoom games. the trick is when the time runs out just start a new meeting-Snack break!
