I cannot thank you enough for posting this video! We have a 15-year-old vinyl fence and unfortunately our neighbor accidentally blew a hole threw one of the pickets. The company that originally installed the fence no longer sold our line of fencing, in fact, no one in our state sold our fence anymore 😢 No one was willing to come help repair it, but thanks to your video we were able to order replacement pieces and do it ourselves! We had tried everything to push the prongs in and nothing worked (and because of the age of the fence, I was worried we'd break or crack other pieces in the process). Your flashing suggestion worked like a charm though! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Recently our vinyl fence was destroyed by hurricane Ian. I have to repair the fence by myself. Watching your video makes it a lot easier for me to removed the top rail. Thank you so much.

I can't give enough thumbs up on this. Have to do this. Way to problem solve, loved how you fixed the tab problem at the beginning- way to go! One thing, everybody please cap the top of your pvc fenced on all posts. The wind blew one of mine off & a squirrel fell threw. Bless his heart, he chewed his way 1/2 way out of there, only to meet my large dog who got ahold of him in the end. I had to spend 2 hours cutting the rest of the post to get him out of there- took him to the vet- not sure if he made it or not.

just had it happen to me from the last stom that past and was wondering how to do the repair myself. Thank you so much for your time in sharing.

The arial view down the top of the post shows the two top rails butted together. Then he removes the screw. Then he slides that rail almost 2" to the left. That cannot be done because the post the rail slides into does not have 2" of space. It has two top rails butted against each other. (That is my fence problem. I think I am going to have to rock the post back and forth until I can get the rail in. Then secure with a screw. Then reinforce the post into the ground.)

You are brilliant! We just had damage occur to our top rail. You saved the day!

I had the same struggle you did with getting the top rail out. The gutter flashing trick enabled me to get the rail out, put the slats back in and complete the job myself without having to call a professional. Many thanks !!!

I’m far from being handy. A storm blew out the pickets of a panel. No fence company would come out to repair unless they originally installed it. The fence is 17 years old so I don’t know the original installers. Saw your video and bought a 49 cent piece of gutter flashing and in 15 minutes I repaired my fence. Thank you for your video!!

I didn’t see you attempt to remove a bottom rail…. You won’t be able to pull the cap and maneuver the metal plates over the tabs. This may work it 1/2 the time.

Thanks for watching... We recently had a derecho move through our area and the only way the tree trimmers could get the cherry-picker into my back yard was if I removed one of the 8 foot panels. I used this procedure when removing the top and bottom rail. Since you can't get your hand inside the post to help get the gutter flashing past the tabs on the bottom rail, what I did was add a slight bend to the end that I insert into the post. To make the slight bend I held the gutter flashing against the palm of my hand and even with the tips of my fingers then I cupped my hand slightly (just enough to give the gutter flashing a slight bend). In my case when I removed the bottom rail I also needed to push the post in the opposite direction that I was sliding the rail. It didn't take much of a push but it helped when getting that first side removed. Good question....

Hmm. My way was considerably less ingenious. Since the top rail was broken anyway... I just put a Sawzall with a long blade down inside the posts and cut the offending bit of the top rail off on either side. I could have secured the ends with string or something before I cut, but I just let them fall down the post. If I really need them out for some reason, I'll regret my lack of planning, but so far, not so much. I suppose there's more than one way to skin a vinyl cat.

Where were you able to find just the top rail and picket pieces? I have an almost identical repair needed and cannot, for the life of me, find where I can purchase ONLY these parts. I have the exact same fence as you (in tan). Thanks in advance and AWESOME tip on how to work around the tabs!!! This is going to be a lifesaver if I can ever find parts.

Yes, I was able to find (and get) the correct pieces. It took a couple of trips but I was able to get them. What I found out was that this model of fence has a slight manufacturing change. While the panels are still 6X8 panels the post and pickets are not the same size as they were 14 years ago. The silver lining here is that the top and bottom rail did remain pretty much the same so those were easy to get. The pickets on the other hand are different and I needed to have them ordered. The pickets are different because the walls of the picket are slightly thicker. If you will be replacing more than one of them and you are still working with a full size panel I would put the newer pickets on the ends of the panel and keep the older pickets in the middle. (I made a follow up video when i finally got the correct pickets and I tried to show the difference. Video link is kzread.info/dash/bejne/h45ol66oY62coqg.html ) The company I went with for the parts was 'American Fence Company' I believe they are a nation wide company and I could take my broken pieces to them with the measurements and they were able to help with getting everything I needed. I believe in my first video I called this a KROY K-373 model fence. Today I believe KROY is called PlyGen and the model that is closest to this 6x8 Privacy Fence is the K-372. These are the parts I ordered: 1.) 1-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 94-1/2 slotted rail (7/8") (white) You will need to specify Tan 2.) K-372 Picket 7/8" x 64-1/4 (White PVC) again specify Tan for your fence The parts aren't expensive. I think the rails are $15 each and the pickets are $8 each. And finally if you fence is like mine you may need to cut the new picket down to size, but thats easily done and you will only need to remove like a 1/4 to half an inch. Just keep an old picket on hand to use for determining the size. I hope this has helped... Good luck with your project and thanks for watching...

Thanks for Watching... I believe I bought the gutter flashing at The 'Home Depot' in our store that is one of the last isles in the store where all of the roofing, shingles, and laddres are usually on display.....

Just cut a piece off the broken slat that will make up the difference and slide it down to the bottom. if you cut it straight you probably won't be able to see it. They probably don't make that size anymore.

You are correct. That size is no longer made. What I found out was that the company I purchased the fence from all they do is 'install'. I thought they also kept raw material in stock and I could go to them and have a new picket cut. But that was all wrong. Since they only do installs they keep very little raw material on hand. What they had to do was contact the fence manufacturer and have a new picket cut to the length I needed. The picket raw material is actually like 16 foot long and when you order a panel the picket are cut to length depending on which panel you buy. i.e. 4ft high, 6ft high or 8ft high.... Over the years they have figured out that they can shorten the picket channel and increase the thickness of each picket to give the panel more overall strength thats why the newer picket didn't fit my older fence. I was advised by the parts counter that next time I may have to replace an entire panel because my style of picket will be harder to get..... Since they were able to get a picket cut for me I ordered 4 just so I could have some spares on hand.

That’s great but how are you going to left the metal over the bottom rail tabs?

Where did you purchase the top rail at? I have looked at both Home Depot and Lowe’s and they don’t carry it.

Try Fence Factory if you have one close. Call and give them EXACT dimensions. They are usually very helpful. Or try Vinyl Concepts but are expensive if they carry what you need. Confirm color as well. Not all Vinyl white is the same white! Color, tone, texture or sheen. Good luck

I went to American Fence Company to get my top rail and pickets replaced. I needed to take my old pieces into them so they could see them and get the proper pieces ordered and delivered.

The camera motion is bad. Is this a helmet cam?

I can’t get the damn top rail to slide back in, you did it so easily, the tab is stopping it from going back in. I’m going to try again tomorrow to push it back in

Thank you for watching.... This sounds interesting..... I'm just an everyday homeowner and not a fence installer by any means, but give me a minute to do some brain storming here, and you can give this some thought or a try if you like..... Lets say you have the right side of the top rail slid in already....... and it's the left side that won't slide in.... It may be possible that the posts are too far apart and the tabs on the right side are stopping the top rail from sliding far enough to the left so the left side tabs will clear the opening.... If you can grab a second person have them apply a little bit of force to the left post (just enough to make it lean a little towards the right post) then try and slide your top rail into the left post again... Hopefully I didn't make that too confusing.... Good luck and let us know it goes...

Thank you for watching. Short 'Yes' but the color is a match..... Keep in mind this is a brand new picket setting against a picket that has been in place for several years. after the new picket had beenin place for a while it blended right in with the others....

Please edit the video and get to the point there's no need to hear about the picket being short. Why didn't you made sure you had the right size before making video.

Thanks for watching. I hope you were able to find some help. Edit the video:.... No, I'm not going to do that. I find videos from everyday homeowners who try DIY projects interesting, and sometimes things simply don't go as planned, editing that out of the video will make it dull. I like it the way it is. Why didn't I make sure the picket was the right size? I probably explained that more in 'Part-2' than I did in 'Part-1' mainly because I had a lot more information available when the replacement parts finally came in. These PVC fences are premanufactured kits. You don't buy the raw material and cut to size on-site and install instead you buy the entire 6X8 panel and if it takes 34 panels to complete the project then you buy 34 panels. That's what I did... Then 14 years later, I have a limb that breaks one of the panels. I contacted the company that installed the fence, gave them the information from the original sales order and install documentation and asked if they could repair it. Their quote was $500 to fix a $100 PVC panel That's how I decided to do it myself. I requested they order the parts necessary ad I would do it myself. They agreed and placed the order for me. It wasn't until I brought the new picket back to them with the old picket, as an example, that they knew there was a change. In the 14 years, my fence had been in place the manufacturer 'Kroy' made a design change in that 6X8 privacy panel. The slot in the top and bottom rail was not as deep as the original. and this allowed them to make the individual pickets thicker and shorter the end result to apparently gain more strength in the panel. The solution (at least for this fix) was to contact the manufacturer and have a longer picket made for my panel. I ordered 5 of them, 1 to make the fix and 4 more to store in the shed just in case. I was told that in the future If I need to repair a panel that I should plan on replacing the entire panel because ordering the individual parts of the panel may not be an option, simply because of the differences in the manufacture of the panel.

This video did not have to be 12 minutes and 28 seconds long.
